Rio Ferdinand out for six weeks and Nemanja Vidic likely to miss next few weeks after picking up injuries in Manchester United's win at West Brom

The Red Devils' first choice center back partners were both taken off in the opening Premier League fixture at the Hawthorns leaving an inexperienced defense to play on.

Manchester United center backs Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic were both taken off after sustaining injuries in the club's opening Premier League match against West Bromwich Albion.

Vidic was replaced by Jonny Evans after 52 minutes with what looked like a groin injury, while Ferdinand was replaced by Phil Jones after 75 minutes clutching his hamstring.

Both players watched the rest of the game from the dugout, rather than heading down the tunnel for immediate treatment.

United's defense for the rest of the match consisted of Chris Smalling, Jonny Evans, Phil Jones and Fabio in front of David De Gea in goal, with Patrice Evra having started on the bench following his return from injury.

The absence of the Reds' first choice center back partnership could leave the champion side threadbare in defense and lacking in experience, having sold John O'Shea and Wes Brown to Sunderland and loaned out promising young center back Ritchie De Laet to Norwich.
