Carrick insists Man Utd can handle Scholes retirement

30.07.11 | tribalfootball.com

Michael Carrick saysManchester United will survive the retirement of Paul Scholes.
Carrick believes that United will be able to cope - just as they did whenCristiano Ronaldo left for Real Madridin an £80million deal back in July 2009.
He said: "When Cristiano left, they said, 'You can't replace him because of the player he is' - but you have to adapt as a squad and as a team.
"We have lost Scholesy but we've got to adapt. I'm not going to play like Scholesy because that's not my game - and neither will Anderson or Ryan Giggs.
"You have to adapt in different ways and I'm sure we will do that. I'm not going to change as a player, that's the way I am. You are your own character, personality and player.
"I'll just keep doing the things I do. It has been successful over the years, so it won't change how I do things."

He accepts he has now grown into one of the senior figures at United following his £18.6million arrival fromTottenham in July 2006.
Carrick said: "We've got a lot of younger players, so it's up to the older ones to set an example of how things should be done - and I suppose I'm one of them now."

But England star Carrick does not see that as a threat to him.

Man Utd legend Scholes: Young ideally suited to us

30.07.11 | tribalfootball.com

Manchester United icon Paul Scholes has been impressed by their new signings in preseason.
Scholes will be coaching at Carrington next term and is looking forward to helping the new faces settle into the squad. Phil Jones and David De Gea are the other additions since last season's title-winning campaign and both are also likely to make an impact.
"Ashley Young I probably know most about after seeing him in the Premier League for a few years now," he toldMUTV. "He's a player ideally suited to us.
"He makes goals and is capable of scoring goals as well so I think he'll be great for us. He can play left, right or centre-forward as he did do a bit for Aston Villa last season. He's a versatile player and I'm sure he'll do well for us.
"Phil Jones broke into the Blackburn team in the last year or so and he's a quick, strong player and relatively local lad as well which will help. He's got to Rio Ferdinand andNemanja Vidic to learn from which is great for him and he can only improve watching these players. He can also play in central midfield and it's nice to have that option as well.
"David De Gea, although he's a young lad, has got quite a lot of experience withAtletico Madrid. They're a big club with big crowds every week.
"We'll just have to see how he gets on. Edwin [van der Sar] is obviously going to be missed as he was such a big presence in goal but 'm sure Eric Steele and the manager think they've got the right man and I hope they have."

But Scotland skipper Fletcher said: "I would love to play them.
"It is not something I'd be fearful of.
"You dream as a kid of playing for your country in a finals and I'd hate it if when it is all over I had never featured in either.
"But there is no denying the draw could put us in a group of death.
"It is not good being in pot four - but when everyone is fit we have a very good team.
"Last season Charlie Adam was outstanding. He is a talisman."

Man Utd chief Gill insists Berbatov has TWO years on current deal

30.07.11 | tribalfootball.com

Manchester United chief David Gill insists they're happy with the contract situation of Dimitar Berbatov.
Even though United have the option to extend it by another year, the club's relaxed attitude to the situation and manager Sir Alex Ferguson's decision to leave him out of his squad for the Champions League Final in May, has placed a question mark over whether the English champions will exercise that option.
"He's not in the final year of his contract. People keep telling me that but there is an option to extend Dimitar's contract by another year, on the club's side.
"We can do it whenever we want to do it. There are no conditions around it. Everyone has been talking about Berbatov from the outside, saying he wants to leave or that we want him to leave, but we don't want him to go. We want him to stay.
"He scored over 20 goals last season, so there is no desire on our behalf to see him go. From our perspective he has, effectively, two years to go.
"There's no point in extending that option. We have until the end of the season, so we can assess how it goes, talk to him, see how he performs and see what happens.
"I've not had one conversation with Dimitar (about his future). There has been no correspondence in that respect.
"The decision Alex took was a decision he took for that particular game. It wasn't a decision taken with a view that we want Dimitar to go, because we don't."

It will be an important lesson learned for coach Paul McGuinness' charges and helpful in their development and nothing should be taken away from their excellent progression to the final in Northern Ireland.

Not that Gill is expressing any concern.
"We are supportive of financial fair play," he said. "We worked with UEFA for many months on proposals that were acceptable to the clubs and the organisation.
"For the long-term good of the game, I don't think people can argue with the concept of breaking even.
"I don't know enough about the Manchester City deal and I don't get vexed about it.
"I have enough worries about what we are doing. That is what matters to me."

Scholes backing Welbeck to be latest Man Utd local hero

30.07.11 | tribalfootball.com

Scholes is willing the 20-year-old from Longsight to take on the mantle of the local lads at United.
“If anyone comes through I hope it is Danny,” Scholes told the Manchester Evening News.
“As a Manchester lad, I think it would be great for the club for Danny to do it. I think that local element is always good to have. It is a big year for him. He has had a good year up atSunderland and he has also had one or two injuries that haven't helped him.
“But he needs to push on now and stake his claim. Everyone knows the talent is there. It is up to younger lads like him to do the business and make the manager take notice.
“For someone like him it is good to be at United and watch the top forwards we have. To be able to play with and study Wayne Rooney every day in training is fantastic.
“They have to learn from him and set about competing with him.”

I haven’t been scoring goals or been the main playmaker in the team for a while. I don’t think I actually need replacing in that way at all.
"I wasn’t the pulling the strings anymore, definitely in the last two years and probably even since I was 31-32. I haven’t been as prominent in the side. I wasn’t scoring the goals and I wasn't making the goals. I think people are obsessed with having to replace me.
"If you look at the facts over the last couple of years. I haven’t played in the big games. So I don’t think there is that much that needs replacing."

"Ashley Young is around better players now. No disrespect to those he has worked with before but he will get the ball more often, in better areas, delivered to him better. And he will be playing with better finishers. It will make him better. At the same time United demand more from you as an individual."

Sir Alex Ferguson: Thierry Henry was always a great threat to Manchester United

The legendary coach had some kind words for his former English Premier League adversary after squaring off again in the MLS All-Star Game.

HARRISON, NJ. -- Thierry Henry spent eight seasons with Arsenal, racking up nearly 300 appearances and 200 goals.

On Wednesday night at the MLS All-Star Game, the lethal forward couldn't burn one of his old foes, Sir Alex Ferguson, the way he did consistently at the height of his career.

Instead, Manchester United ran out with a 4-0 triumph at Red Bulls Arena. Still, with the All-Stars enjoying the better of possession in the first half before wholesale changes that included yanking Henry off the pitch, Ferguson was full of praise for the former Arsenal star.

"He’s always a big concern with Arsenal, always a great threat to us," said Ferguson of the Frenchman. "I think he’s one of the few players that has scored regularly against us."

Now with the New York Red Bulls, Henry's efforts to win the All-Star game with his league compatriots were foiled by an in-form Manchester United team, which is heading into another title-defending season.

Speaking fondly of the 33-year-old, Ferguson pointed out that with such a long and successful career comes a supreme understanding of the game.

“Well, he’s still got that change of pace, and he’s always a threat because of it," Ferguson said. "And his experience, he showed his experience again tonight. He’s had a great career.”

A legend himself, the Scottish manager certainly knows one when he sees one. So it's no timid praise when he dubs Henry a true Arsenal legend.

“I think he’s definitely a legend with Arsenal, there’s no question about that," said Ferguson. "I think that’ll always be the case. His time there was fantastic and he’s always been a good role model in how he holds himself, as a footballer and a human being. He’s never wavered from that type of professionalism that you need to achieve that status."

With the match over, it's unknown whether the two will ever face each other again. If they don't, the last battle will have gone the way of Ferguson and Manchester United.

Omar Bravo wanted to exchange jerseys with concussed Javier Hernandez at the MLS All-Star Game

Omar Bravo wanted to trade shirts with fellow Mexico international striker Javier Hernandez after the MLS All-Star Game, but a concussion caused Chicharito to miss the event.

Jul 28, 2011 2:45:00 AM

By Zac Lee Rigg

HARRISON, N.J. - This wasn't Omar Bravo's first All-Star game – the Mexican striker suited up for Chivas de Guadalajara in the first edition of the “MLS takes on the world” format – but it was his first time suiting up for the MLS side.

He's ended up on the losing side in both games. The most recent, a 4-0 loss to Manchester United, saw the Sporting Kansas City striker toil fruitlessly up front for 81 minutes.

“No, the result doesn't matter,” Bravo said when asked if the scoreline left him disappointed. “It's about competing with a very strong team, sharp in front of goal. We had little margin for error because of the short time we've had together, but that's no justification. We played on their level in the first half, they're a great team.”

In the second half, the Mexican international latched onto a free rebound after Ben Amos spilled Chris Wondolowski's sizzling left-footed drive, but somehow construed to shoot wide while unmarked.

Bravo was one of the few who played the majority of the game. David Beckham lasted the full 90, but the Englishman is suspended from the LA Galaxy's tie against the Vancouver Whitecaps on Saturday due to yellow-card accumulation.

"He's a hard worker,” Hans Backe explained of the decision to leave Bravo in the game deep into the second half. “He can run all day long."

However, after putting in the legwork, Bravo didn't receive the token he wanted. Who did he want to exchange jerseys with?

“With Javier, of course!” Bravo said.

Javier 'Chicharito' Hernandez missed the match due to a concussion suffered in training the day before. Bravo's former Chivas strike partner spent the night in a New York-area hospital before being cleared to return to the Manchester United hotel.

“He'll be out for a couple of weeks,” Man United boss Sir Alex Ferguson said. “Saying that, he wouldn’t have been playing for a couple of weeks anyway. He's coming back from his break after playing in the Gold Cup for Mexico, and he was not going to be involved in our team for two or three weeks anyway.”

That timeline will mean the Red Devils will have to do without Hernandez for the friendly against Barcelona in Washington, D.C., Saturday as well as the Community Shield against Chelsea on Aug. 7.

Still, Hernandez should recover fully in time to defend Manchester United's Premier League trophy.

“I have not spoken to him,” Bravo said. “I spoke to players from Manchester and they say that he’s well, that there's no problem.”

Manchester United players give their assessment of Major League Soccer

Manchester United players Anders Lindegaard and Ji-Sung Park have strong opinions of soccer in the United States after touring the country over the last two weeks.

Jul 28, 2011 2:10:00 AM

By Alex Labidou

HARRISON, N.J. - Year after year, Manchester United continues to show that there is a huge disparity between the world’s best and Major League Soccer. Yet, the same questions remain after another drubbing by the Red Devils.
What can be done to change the league? What are players in America missing?
Manchester United’s goalkeeper Anders Lindegaard believes that in order for American soccer to improve, the way coaches organize their players needs to be better.
“Overall, it’s not on the same level as we are, with all due respect,” said Lindegaard. “I think the organization of the teams overall has to be better.”
Lindegaard started almost every one of United’s games during the club's United States tour this month and has seen the Red Devils beat MLS clubs by average of nearly four goals a game.
The Danish goalkeeper, who has been compared to United’s recently retired legendary keeper Edwin van der Sar, says that he doesn’t believe that players in MLS lack talent but they are missing out on the small tactical details that are stressed in Europe.
However, Lindegaard doesn't see a quick fix to the dilemma as Europeans have been perfecting their craft and coaching techniques for decades. The 27-year-old says that if Americans put more focus into the coaching side of the game, there is no reason why the development of players can’t catch up to the levels of Europe sooner than later.
“You guys have athletic players who can surprisingly play more technically then I expected,” said Lindegaard to the American press. “I was actually really surprised to see how many teams tried to play technically against us. It wasn’t like they were just trying to long ball it throughout the game.“
He added, “You have great facilities and beautiful stadiums; all it takes is organizing the game better out here.”
Ji-Sung Park, whose wonder goal secured him All-Star MVP, said that he thinks MLS is improving but also agrees that the one thing missing in its clubs is consistent and constant communication on the field. He also added more talented players wouldn’t hurt either.
“They need to improve a lot of things, it’s not just one thing, it’s everything” said Park. “More [talented] players need to come play but I think it will change over the next few years."
MLS All-Star defender Tim Ream acknowledges Lindegaard and Park's assessment. When asked what attribute from the Red Devils he would like to add to his own club, the Red Bulls' 23-year-old player said that he would improve the level of communication.
“I think their cohesiveness, how they played with each other and no matter if they are having a good day or a bad one,” answered Ream to Goal.com. “If we had that in New York, we’d be unstoppable.”
Still, both Lindegaard and Park were amazed by the progress made by MLS clubs.
“I was shocked because I heard soccer is your smallest sport out here,” said Lindegaard. “If that’s the case, then your other sports must be massive.”
Park revealed that if he was offered an opportunity to play in Major League Soccer, he would seriously consider it.
“The American league will be big,” said Park. “Yea, if I had an opportunity [I’d consider it] but for now, I’d like to focus on European football.”
Free-Kicks:
Despite seeing Manchester United add David De Gea on a 18.3 million pound move from Atletico Madrid, Lindegaard believes that he will still have many opportunities to show that he is capable of being a number one goalkeeper.
“No matter what goalkeeper comes in, I will still have my chances and I will prove myself,” said Lindegaard.

Quality of finishing separates Manchester United from MLS All-Stars

After the fact, most parties involved that a four-goal margin didn't reflect the balance of play in the MLS All-Star Game. Superior finishing set Manchester United apart.

Jul 28, 2011 1:26:00 AM

By Kyle McCarthy

HARRISON, N.J. – MLS All-Star coach Hans Backe highlighted his side's dynamic attacking qualities in the buildup to Wednesday night's 4-0 defeat to Manchester United.

For the most part, the approach play from his adventurous 4-3-3 against United matched those expectations. The All-Stars offered an ample dose of movement – particularly in the first half – and possessed the ball well enough to carve out some opportunities on the evening.

"We did pretty well with our intention of keeping the ball and passing the ball," New York forward Thierry Henry said. "We could have tried to stay in front of our box and end it there. I thought we did well. We had some opportunities in the first half and, in the second half, we also had some chances."

All of those chances, however, failed to yield any tangible results. Threatening excursions into the penalty area were few and far between, but the All-Stars' long-distance barrage prompted four saves from United goalkeeper Anders Lindegaard in the opening half.

In stark contrast to the All-Stars' inability to cap off their chances with the necessary incisiveness in the final third, United conjured up a pair of goals in the first half – including Park Ji-Sung's killer and well-taken solo effort on the stroke of half time – to post a halftime lead that may not have entirely reflected the balance of play.

"The quality of finishing, that's what it is," New England midfielder Shalrie Joseph said. "You can see the difference in the leagues. They were just better finishers in front of goal. We had shots on target. They had goals. That makes a difference."

Such profligacy ultimately gets punished against a top-quality side like United, according to Henry.

"We had some chances to score maybe one or two, but we didn't," Henry said. "That's the difference when you play against a team like Man United. If they have one chance – and maybe not even a chance – and they score. That's the difference."

Although the All-Stars weren't able to convert in front of goal in either half, they can at least reflect upon the difference between the sides and use this experience to work on their sharpness as they return to domestic play this weekend.

"It's a great experience to see what the next level is like, playing against guys who are very skillful," Chivas USA midfielder Nick LaBrocca said. "Maybe we can take a little something [from what] they did today."

MLS All-Stars 0-4 Manchester United: The best players in Major League Soccer couldn't hang with England's finest

Manchester United continued its dominance during July's preseason tour of the United States as four players scored in another easy win over the MLS All-Stars.

By Mike Slane

HARRISON, N.J. - Most professional All-Star games are high-scoring events, but in this case only one team was putting points on the scoreboard.

And it wasn't the "All-Star" team.

The Major League Soccer All-Stars were held scoreless for the first time against foreign competition as they suffered a 4-0 defeat to Manchester United Wednesday night at Red Bulls Arena.
"I'm not quite happy with our night, to be honest," MLS All-Star coach Hans Backe said.

Anderson, Dimitar Berbatov, Ji-Sung Park and Danny Welback scored for the English club, which improved to a 4-0 record during this summer's World Football Challenge tour. Park walked away with the MVP award.

The MLS All-Stars have been outscored by Manchester United 9-2 over the last two years. Additionally, the Premier League team has outscored MLS opponents 17-2 this month, including a 7-0 victory over the Seattle Sounders a week ago.

"Obviously, when you play at team like Manchester United, you expect it to be hard, you expect them to play like they play," MLS star David Beckham said. "It's always going to be a hard game, but it's not embarrassing. You're against one of the best teams in the world."

It didn't take too long for Manchester United to start pouring it on the All-Stars despite the MLS players having multiple scoring opportunities early on themselves.

"If we could have put one away, then it could have been different, it would have been closer," Beckham said. "But when you don't put chances away, then a club like Manchester United and players that play for Manchester United for capitalize on that."

Rooney and Berbatov nicely set up Manchester United's first goal 20 minutes into the action, finding the trailing Anderson for the strike.

In the seconds leading to halftime, Park beat MLS defender Sean Franklin in the box before placing a left-footed shot past goalkeeper Faryd Mondragón.

"It was obviously unfortunate with us going in 2-0 at halftime," Beckham said.

The All-Stars made several substitutions at halftime but their fortunes didn't change.

Seven minutes into the second half, Berbatov added to the tally after playing a nice feed from Rooney off the crossbar and following his own attempt to finally knock it home and give his team a three-goal edge.

Welback, a second-half sub, put the game away for good with a shot from just outside the box that took a big deflection off All-Star defender Geoff Cameron on its way into the back of the net.

Beckham, who played all 90 minutes, set up the best chances for his team to score during the game while facing his former team. With only three midfielders in Backe's formation, Beckham was the director of the team's attack all night.

"I think David was phenomenal," Backe said. "He's so, so competitive."

Beckham was the captain of the MLS squad, a role many thought would go to Thierry Henry of the hometown New York Red Bulls. The Galaxy midfielder mysteriously found the captain's armband in his locker prior to kick off.

"I was as surprised as anyone to get the armband because I expected Thierry to have it with it being his home and with it being his team and fans," Beckham said. "But I think Thierry might have sneakily put it in my locker before the game. I did thank him for it, but he didn't admit to it."

Many fans were there to see Javier 'Chicharito' Hernandez, but the Mexican star remained in the team's hotel during the game after suffering a mild concussion in a practice session on Tuesday. He spent the night in a hospital for precautionary reasons and there is no timetable for his return.

Manchester United will play Barcelona in a rematch of the Champions League final Saturday in Washington, D.C.

Thierry Henry: Chicharito's debut season with Manchester United was amazing

The soccer legend hails Chicharito, who recently returned to the Red Devils following his Gold Cup title with Mexico.

NEW YORK - Add Thierry Henry to the millions of Chicharito fans around the world.

The New York Red Bulls forward was very impressed by Javier Hernandez's first season with Manchester United after the Mexican youngster exploded onto the scene with 13 league goals to help lead his team to the Premier League title.

"He's a great finisher," said Henry. "Going to Manchester United and doing what he did was just amazing. I don't think anyone was expecting him to do what he did, but he did it."

Chicharito played his first game with the English club last summer against Major League Soccer's All-Star team. And this year, he's back with United as the team takes on the best players in MLS this Wednesday at Red Bull Arena in Harrison, N.J.

"My first game with Manchester United was in [last year's] preseason, also against the MLS All-Stars and I'm very happy to be with my team again," Chicharito said.

Chicharito recently rejoined the Red Devils, who have spent the last couple weeks touring the United States and dominating MLS teams. The striker had been away from the team since leading Mexico to the Gold Cup title in June and will slowly work his way back.

Sir Alex Ferguson, United's legendary coach, stressed that it will take some time before Chicharito is on the pitch this summer. The Premier League season is a marathon, not a sprint, so there's no need to rush the 23-year-old back into action.

"The first and most important thing is to re-energize him, give him the proper training before we even consider him for the first team because the season will not be decided in the first match," he said. "When we get to understand where he is in terms of the physical side we then can start introducing him to the team again."

David Beckham credits his career to Sir Alex Ferguson for giving him his start at Manchester United

Nearly two decades ago, Sir Alex Ferguson handed a debut to a teenager from London. David Beckham still credits the Scot for his current success.

HARRISON, N.J. - With hindsight, it seems obvious. Of course a coach should hand David Beckham – world superstar, veteran of over 100 caps for his national team, perhaps the best striker of a dead ball on the globe – his debut.

But Beckham remembers when he was a fresh-faced teenager, and recalls the bravery it took for Sir Alex Ferguson to trust his youth team to supply the next cycle of players for Manchester United's first team.

Even after a falling out with Ferguson and a high-profile transfer to Real Madrid nearly a decade ago, he's still grateful for what his first coach gave him.

“I had many years, many successful years playing under Sir Alex Ferguson,” Beckham said. “I wouldn't be in the position I am today if it wasn't for him, because he gave me a chance when I was 16, 17 years old and he had the faith to give youngsters a chance. I owe him a lot. He was a father figure to me for many years.”

The English midfielder completed 90 minutes against his old club Manchester United on Wednesday night as part of the MLS All-Star team. In addition to his fan allegiance to the reigning English champion, the shared history made it an emotional venture for the 36-year-old midfielder.

“Obviously, to play against Manchester United still with Sir Alex Ferguson as manager, still with some of the players I played with and the fans I played in front of for many years, is emotional,” Beckham said. “It's always going to be emotional coming up against Manchester United. It's always difficult as well.”

MLS quickly learned just how difficult playing the Red Devils can be. Two goals against the run of play in the first half paved the way for a comprehensive 4-0 win to the team still in preseason preparations.

Beckham wasn't surprised at the gap in the scoreline.

“If you play at that level you don't stop at one-, two-nil,” the midfielder said. “You want to work hard because you want to get your fitness. You're not playing at a club like Manchester United to go through the motions and just to win 1-0.”

That competitive mentality saw Man United win the Premier League season with perhaps a more functional than glitzy roster. It's the same sort of mentality the side used to win the 1999 treble, Beckham claims, and it starts in the youth teams.

“Any new player who comes into Manchester United, they feel that straight away,” the LA Galaxy Designated Player said. “That seems installed into you from a very young age as a Manchester United youth team player and it carries on all the way through the team. It's [a] never-say-die attitude, is what Manchester United have.”
