Aston Villa chairman Randy Lerner has warned fans they need to get their finances right this season.
Despite selling Stewart Downing toLiverpool for £20million and Ashley Young to Manchester United for £17m this summer, the American billionaire and his chief executive Paul Faulkner both signed a letter that went out to supporters this week setting out their economic strategy. And the contents explain why new boss Alex McLeish can’t even sign free transfer target Thomas Hitzlsperger from West Ham until he’s completed a deal to move defender Carlos Cuellar toRangers.
Lerner’s letter thanks fans for their support last year but warns: “Our focus is to manage the investments we’ve made at Villa Park to promote strong financial performance.
“We feel that club revenue and player wages are key to competitive performance.”
