Cristiano Ronaldo on Manchester United return: You never know

The Portugal international is determined to break his own league goalscoring record and stated that a move back to United is a possibility

Feb 23, 2012

Real Madrid attacker Cristiano Ronaldo has refused to rule out the possibility of a return toManchester United in the future.

The Portugal international broke the world record transfer fee in 2009, when he joined Madrid from Manchester United in a 94 million euros deal after helping the Red Devils to win three Premier League titles and one Champions League crown, among other trophies.

Spanish TV show Punto Pelota found out that Rio Ferdinand had uploaded a video of a short conversation with the 27-year-old after Madrid's 4-0 victory against Racing Santander on Saturday to an iPhone application.

Questioned by his former teammate on a return to Old Trafford, Ronaldo said, "You never know, my friend."

The former Sporting Lisbon talent also stated that he is determined to break the record for the most Primera Division goals in a single season, which he holds after netting 40 times in the competition in 2010-11.

"Will I break my record? Of course, man," he said.

The Red Devils continue in the Europa League even though they suffered a loss at Old Trafford, with the Dutch side more than a match for the Premier League team on Thursday.

Manchester United is through to the last 16 of the Europa League, despite falling to a 2-1 defeat against Ajax at Old Trafford on Thursday, progressing with an aggregate win of 3-2.
The match was extremely even, with Ajax often having long periods of pressure and possession, but it was the hosts who took the lead, with Javier Hernandez producing a clam finish. But that was as good as it got for them.
Aras Ozbiliz equalized for the Dutch side with a well-taken half-volley and Toby Alderweireld scored the late winner with the match coming to a close, but the hosts did hold on.
Sir Alex Ferguson made four changes from the side that won in Amsterdam a week ago, with Rafael da Silva and Chris Smalling coming in for Jonny Evans and Rio Ferdinand, while in the midfield Park Ji-Sung replaced Michael Carrick in the center.
Up front, Dimitar Berbatov replaced the ill Wayne Rooney as the Bulgarian started alongside Hernandez, with Danny Welbeck providing cover from the bench.
The visitors played a very similar team to the one that lost last week. Ricardo van Rhijn came into the side for Ismael Aissatti, while Nicolas Lodeiro started as part of the front three with Dmitry Bulykin missing out through injury.
After an energetic start from both sides, the hosts took the lead after just five minutes as Berbatov slipped through an impressive forward pass which Hernandez controlled, before skipping past the attentions of Toby Alderweireld and finding the back of the net with confidence.
The two sides continued to knock the ball around comfortably, but every time United advanced it looked like scoring, and Hernandez very nearly returned the favor to Berbatov with 13 minutes played.
Fabio da Silva surged forward through the middle before playing an excellent pass through to Hernandez, but after being pushed out wider than he would have liked, he slid the ball towards the far post with his strike partner arriving late, but Jan Vertonghen stretched and conceded a corner.
However, Ajax was proving it wasn't just there to make up the numbers as it looked to grab a lifeline. Ozbiliz acquired possession in the United area after good work from van Rhijn and tricked his way past two defenders before shooting, but David De Gea was equal to the Armenian’s effort.
By now United was showcasing some increasingly sloppy passing, inviting pressure on to the club, with the likes of Christian Eriksen, Lodeiro and Ozbiliz looking very dangerous for the visitors.
Following a period of Ajax pressure, the hosts went close to doubling their lead on the night. Nani played a clever disguised pass down the left channel into the penalty area for Berbatov, but the striker’s pass into the goalmouth was deflected ever so slightly out of the path of Hernandez, and Ajax soon made them pay.
The United defenders failed to clear their lines properly after breaking down an attack and the ball fell kindly to Ozbiliz on the edge of the area, with the right winger lashing a low, left-footed half-volley into De Gea’s bottom right corner.
Although Ferguson’s team ended the half with some considerable dominance over its visitors, Ajax held on to the 1-1 score at halftime after a battling 45 minutes.
The start of the second period followed a similar pattern to the first, with both sides committing plenty of players forward, but it was Ajax which continued to look the more dangerous.
First, Lodeiro went close, blasting an effort over from the center of the penalty area following a cutback from Eriksen, then moments later Siem De Jong’s header from a corner was denied by a brilliant save from De Gea.
Without creating an awful lot, Ajax continued to see more of the possession, troubling United with its quick passing and impressive movement, but two substitutions from Ferguson saw the hosts calm the contest down a little.
Jonny Evans took to the field in place of Tom Cleverley, while Paul Scholes replaced Ashley Young, and the midfielder’s impact was immediate as he spread the ball around as well as ever.
Minutes later, Nani was inches from getting his name on the scoresheet as the Portuguese winger cut inside from the right and let rip a thunderous effort with his left foot, but the shot crashed off the crossbar and went behind.
With just over quarter of an hour to go, the hosts had another chance to put the tie beyond all doubt. Welbeck, who replaced Berbatov, stormed down the left after a clever interchange with Park, but when he approached the goal, his attempted pass into the danger area was intercepted and United had to settle for a corner.
The visitors ensured the final moments would be nervy for United with Alderweireld finding the net following a free kick conceded by Scholes, but they held on to progress, despite making the match a lot harder than they should have.

Europa League Preview: Manchester United - Ajax

Red Devils bidding to reach the last 16 of the Europa League after beating the Dutch side 2-0 in Amsterdam a week ago, but expect the Premier League side to rest key players.

PROBABLE LINEUPS

MANCHESTER UNITED

Rafael, Jones, Smalling, Fabio Park, Cleverley, Scholes, Young Berbatov, Hernandez
AJAX

VermeerVan Rhijn, Alderweireld, Vertonghen, Koppers
De Jong, Eriksen, Anita

With Manchester United facing a potentially tricky trip to Norwich City just two days after facing Ajax, Sir Alex Ferguson looks likely to rest several key players with the Red Devils already 2-0 up.

Although Ferguson may rest players, he also has his fair share of injuries to think about. Antonio Valencia (hamstring), Anders Lindegaard (ankle), Anderson (knock), Nemanja Vidic (knee), Darren Fletcher (bowel condition) and Michael Owen (thigh) are all out.

However, Ryan Giggs (ankle) and Dimitar Berbatov (knock) may be able to return after missing last week’s first leg.

The visiting side, as it did last week, has a number of injury issues itself. Derk Boerrigter (back), Gregory van der Wiel (groin), Eyong Enoh (hamstring), Andre Ooijer (calf) and Kolbeinn Sigthorsson (tibia/leg injury) all look likely to miss out, while Nicolai Boilesen (hamstring) is touch-and-go after sitting out the weekend win over NEC Nijmegen.

Despite bagging two goals against NEC in the league last time out, Dmitry Bulykin may also be forced to miss the trip to Old Trafford after he had to be substituted with only 31 minutes gone in the 4-1 win.

Wayne Rooney ruled out of Manchester United's Europa League clash against Ajax with throat infection

The England forward will not be available as the Red Devils attempt to consolidate their 2-0 first leg advantage at Old Trafford on Thursday, but hopes to return against Norwich.

Feb 22, 2012

Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney will miss Thursday's Europa League match against Ajaxwith a throat infection.
The Red Devils secured a 2-0 win against the Dutch outfit at the Amsterdam ArenA last week, a game in which the 26-year-old played the full 90 minutes.
Sir Alex Ferguson is hopeful that the England star will recover in time to feature at Carrow Road on Sunday for his side's trip to Norwich City.

"Rooney's out for tomorrow. He has a bad throat," the Scot told reporters.

"There were traces of it in Amsterdam last Thursday and he's been in bed for a lot of the weekend."

Rooney had picked up an assist for Javier Hernandez's second goal in the first leg of the club's round of 32 clash.

Ajax denies reports Liverpool's Luis Suarez has been invited to Old Trafford for Manchester United clash in Europa League

The Amsterdam outfit say the Uruguay international will not be making an appearance at Old Trafford in support of his former club

Feb 22, 2012

Liverpool's Luis Suarez will not travel to Old Trafford to support former club Ajax in its last-32Europa League tie against Manchester United.

Reports had surfaced this week that Suarez, who recieved an eight-game ban from the FA for racially abusing Patrice Evra earlier in the season, could be in attendance to support former club Ajax.

However, Ajax's manager of communications, Miel Brinkhuis, has claimed the Dutch outfit has not invited Suarez, but says it is possible an Ajax squad member did.

"Luis was not invited by us, the club Ajax, unlike John Heitiga. The defender will sit in the VIP deck along with our other guests," Brinkhuis told Sp!ts.
"It could have been possible that a player like Jan Vertonghen invited Suarez to the match. I understood from other people that Suarez will not be attending at the match at Old Trafford.

"I have asked someone about his status and he replied: 'No it's not my plan to visit the game.'"

Suarez caused controversy recently when he failed to shake Patrice Evra's hand when the two met during Liverpool's 2-1 defeat at Old Trafford just weeks ago.

Sir Alex Ferguson: Manchester United could have signed Carlos Tevez on a permanent deal if it had acted quicker

The 70-year-old has hailed the Argentine striker as a "big game player." He also discussed Rio Ferdinand's need to adjust his game in recent years due to age and injury.

Feb 20, 2012

Sir Alex Ferguson has suggested that Carlos Tevez could have signed for Manchester United on a permanent deal if the club had acted quicker.
The Argentine spent two years on loan at Old Trafford from 2007 to 2009, winning the Champions League in the process, before leaving the club to join rival Manchester City.
Tevez has recently returned to Eastlands after a spell away from the club following a falling out with manager Roberto Mancini, with Ferguson revealing that he was "hesitant" about signing the striker.
"He is a man for a big game, Carlos Tevez, there’s no question about that," Ferguson told BBC Radio 5 Live. "He’s a big game player and he did well in his season with West Ham, and it was an easy solution because he was loaned to us. We paid the loan fee for that two years and then we had the option to buy him."
However, when Ferguson and United dallied, Tevez left.
"But by the time the option came round, we were maybe a bit slow of course, but his agent was everywhere with him. And the money we were quoted was not what he eventually went for," Ferguson said. "It was a lot, lot more.
"A deal could’ve been done if we’d acted earlier on, but I was just a bit hesitant about it, I wasn’t quite sure."
The 70-year-old also discussed Rio Ferdinand, revealing that he tried to sign the center back from West Ham at the age of 17, before eventually securing the defender’s signature from Leeds United in 2002 for 30 million pounds.
"We tried to get him when he was 17, so I feel I’ve been tracking him all his life," Sir Alex continued. "Their [West Ham] trainer was a guy called Brown at the time, and we phoned him to buy Rio at 17. He said, 'We’ll do a part exchange with Beckham.'"
Ferguson also noted the prominent role Ferdinand plays at the club, discussing how the England international can be influential amongst younger players, with the defender currently helping out midfielder Paul Pogba, whose future at Old Trafford remains in doubt.
"We tracked Rio for a long time, and he’s matured and become an important figure within the club. He’s good with the players, good with the young players," Ferguson added. "At the moment he’s working hard on the young boy Pogba, he’s not sure what to do. He is well regarded, Rio."
Ferdinand has struggled with injuries over the past few seasons, with his first-team appearances often limited due to recurring problems, and the Scotsman has admitted that the 33-year-old may have lost some of his agility and pace in recent years.
"It’s hard for Rio to have so much speed and agility, then he gets to 33 and he’s lost a bit. Maybe 10-15 percent of it, so he’s had to change his game. He used to gamble, Rio, when a guy was slipping away from him he’d [sprint back] because he could [go into] overdrive. He can’t do that now."
Ferguson has chatted with Ferdinand about changes the defender has had to make to his game.
"I spoke to him about it. I said, ‘Look, you’re not the same player you were five years ago, you cannot expect to be and you’ve had the back injuries’. You have to take care of that. He does the yoga now which is good. So just adjust your game, step back a yard," Ferguson said.
"You don’t need to be there on top of him [a striker] knowing your pace is going to get you out – that’s not always going to get you out. He can maybe read the situation better now – he’s doing great, better than he ever did."
With Ferdinand having already ruled himself out of the running to replace John Terry as England captain, the former Aberdeen boss discussed the advice he gave to the center back when he was stripped of the armband last year.
"When the captaincy as taken away from and I spoke to him about it, I said, 'Look, put that out of your mind.' He said, 'Maybe it’s a good thing, I can concentrate on my job here.' I said, 'Rio, it’s the same with us, I can’t have you captain when you’re not available every week.' He took that perfectly well.
"It’s just about coping with an aging player. Scholes and Giggs do the yoga. Scholes has come back nice and fresh," Ferguson concluded.

CAVANI FEVER: Chelsea legend Vialli says "only Rooney better than Cavani"

Wed, 02/22/2012

Chelsea legend Gianluca Vialli hailed the performance of Napoli striker Edinson Cavani last night.

The Uruguay international struck in the 3-1 Champions League over the Blues.

Vialli enthused: "Edinson is a monstrous striker, it's amazing how he matches a huge amount of work with being cool when he is finishing.

"And he's a striker that all coaches would like to have. Only Wayne Rooney (Manchester United) is better than him."

Man Utd striker Chicharito can't explain supersub success

Wed, 02/22/2012

Manchester United striker Javier Hernandez can't explain his success off the bench.

The Mexican netted his 10th goal off the bench earlier this month as the Red Devils secured that thrilling draw at Chelsea.

Only Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has more, although as 28 of the Norwegian's 126 United goals came as a substitute, Hernandez clearly has some way to go.

Hernandez would appear to share the same trait, although he does not know why he has been so successful.

"I don't have the answer to what makes me effective as a substitute," he said. "In football you can always come up with a reason for anything, perhaps it is nothing more than having a little bit of luck.

"I just know if I play one minute, or 10, or 90, I try to play the same way. My mind is always to do my best and help my team."

Man Utd striker Hernandez insists he's happy with his scoring form

Wed, 02/22/2012

Manchester United striker Javier Hernandez says he's pleased with his form this season.

The 23-year-old has nine goals in 26 appearances in 2011/12.

“I think every season is difficult,” he says. “My first year was also very difficult. I’d changed all my life to come here to England.

“There isn’t going to be a season where everything is really good or a season when it’s really bad and I am suffering a lot. We need to keep the balance. Sometimes football is going to give you good things and sometimes it’s going to give you bad things. It’s part of the game.

“The only thing I can do is ensure my attitude is positive so I can help my team. The most important thing is that Manchester United wins all the games.”

Man Utd coach Joyce heaps praise on improving Davide Petrucci

Wed, 02/22/2012

Manchester United reserves coach Warren Joyce is delighted with the form of Davide Petrucci this season.

It has been extremely encouraging to see the 20-year-old get his career firmly back on track after two lengthy spells on the sidelines with pelvic problems obviously affected his momentum.

"We've seen a lot of progression in the way Davide is playing," Joyce told ManUtd.com. "It's coincided with his fitness really.

"He had to work extremely hard over a period of time as he spent a lot of time out of the game - well over 12 months. Now he's worked hard to develop his running power.

"There's never been a question that he's got ability but he had to get other things up to speed and certainly, at the minute, he's amongst the goals."

The Italian midfielder has emerged as a key figure in the team and is likely to feature again when the Reserves face Wigan on Tuesday afternoon.

"I think he's a far better player now than he was before he got injured," stated Joyce. "Especially with his running power, as he didn't particularly have that.

"I think he's developed really well over the last 15 months or so."

Ryan Tunnicliffe back in action for Man Utd

Wed, 02/22/2012

The midfielder impressed, having two shots turned away by the Wigan goalkeeper.

Man Utd boss Ferguson: Ferdinand working hard to convince Pogba to stay

Wed, 02/22/2012

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson admits Rio Ferdinand is pushing Paul Pogba to pen a new contract.

The young French midfielder has been stalling over a new United deal with rumours linking him with a move abroad.

But United boss Ferguson said: "Rio has become an important figure at the club. He is good with the players. He is good with the young players. At the moment, he is working hard on the boy Pogba and talking to him. The young boy is unsure. But Rio is well regarded."

Man Utd to upgrade Nani deal to £130,000-a-week

Wed, 02/22/2012

Manchester United are ready to hand Nani a bumper new contract.

The Sun says United are to open talks with Nani over a megabucks new four-year deal — worth a whopping £130,000 a week.

The champions are ready to spend after raking in a record £175million profit in six months.

United also cut their debts in the second half of last year with the money owed to the Glazer family, under the terms of their takeover, reduced from £508m to £439m.

Portuguese winger Nani, 24, has two years to run on his current contract, worth £90,000 a week.

He is perfectly happy at Old Trafford — despite interest from Juventus and AC Milan — and there are no problems over the terms of his offer.

Man Utd boss Ferguson drops big Moyes hint

Wed, 02/22/2012

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has heaped praise on David Moyes over his work atEverton.

Ferguson was asked this week about his successor and insisted he hadn't discussed the subject with the club.

"At this moment, there are maybe half a dozen managers doing well in the Premier League. Only half a dozen because all the rest of them are fighting for their lives. Some are doing great jobs with the resources they have and David Moyes has been unbelievable. I put him in the top six because what he's done at Everton has been quite miraculous," said Ferguson.

Man Utd keeper Kuszczak happy with Watford move

Wed, 02/22/2012

Manchester United goalkeeper Tomasz Kuszczak is happy with his loan move to Watford.

The Pole, 29, found himself out in the cold at Old Trafford and fears missing this summer's tournament in his home country.

So Kuszczak agreed to drop a division to join mid-table Hornets on loan for the rest of the season.

He said: "I want to have a chance of being involved in the Euros in my home country.

"So I need to be out there playing so everyone can see I'm fighting fit and hungry.

"I miss the feeling of a matchday. Where Watford were in the Championship table never crossed my mind. I knew this to be a good club."

Big in Brazil: Rio revelers celebrate Man Utd star Rooney

Wed, 02/22/2012

Manchester United star Wayne Rooney is big in Brazil.

Rooney was represented at the famous Rio de Janeiro carnival as part of the parade.

Waltzing through the Sambadrome on Monday night, the massive Rooney head caught the eye among similar outfits hailing heroes from Brazil.

Ronaldo - complete with scary huge front teeth - and Romario were two other Samba legends to join Rooney in the fancy dress stakes.

Man Utd insist transfer spending unaffected by Champions League failure

Wed, 02/22/2012

Manchester United insist the lack of Champions League cash this season won't affect their summer spending.

It is estimated the Red Devils will lose approximately £3million per round in prize-money alone by being in UEFA's secondary competition, and although the Europa League does include an extra round, United realise games will not prove as attractive to fans.

However, while they acknowledge revenues will dip, United insist that will have no impact on manager Sir Alex Ferguson's ability to compete in the transfer market, no matter what their critics say.

Ferguson has consistently argued he will not pay over the odds for players and refused to splash out the huge amount of money it would have cost to take Wesley Sneijder to Old Trafford from Inter Milanin the summer after previously missing out on alternative targets Luka Modric and Samir Nasri.

"Sir Alex Ferguson didn't want to buy anyone," insisted a club spokesman.

Paul Pogba in line for Man Utd start against Ajax

Wed, 02/22/2012

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson may hand Paul Pogba a start tomorrow night against Europa League opponents Ajax.

Pogba could make his European debut for Manchester United on Thursday.

Pogba has been on the bench for United's last five games – making an impressive Premier League debut against Stoke last month – and may be given his first taste of European action at Old Trafford tomorrow night with United leading Ajax 2-0 from the first leg of their Europa League tie.

Ex-Man Utd striker Dublin can see Scholes making England comeback

Wed, 02/22/2012

Former Manchester United striker Dion Dublin feels Paul Scholes can do a job for England at the Euros.

Whilst United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has already ruled it out, Dublin can see the merits of Scholes starring for his country again at the ripe old age of 37.

"I can see that," said Dublin.

"I imagine if you took a poll of players, there wouldn't be many who didn't want Paul Scholes in their side. He defies age.

"He hasn't lost any passion for the game. He has an aura about him that makes you think he can do anything.

"He is a very special player."

Ferguson: I must keeping going at Man Utd - or her indoors will send me on milk run!

Wed, 02/22/2012

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson admits there's no chance of him retiring.

Ferguson passed 70 on New Year's Eve but there are still no signs of any let-up from the all-conquering Old Trafford chief.

And he could not pack it in anyway, as wife Cathy has claimed she would farm him out to the dairy trade.

Ferguson revealed: "She says 'Out of the house. If you think I'm looking after you, and you are going to be in my road every day, you're not on. So you can get another job, become a milkman'!"

Evans credits new fitness regime for personal Man Utd fight-back

Wed, 02/22/2012

Manchester United defender Jonny Evans admits he's feeling stronger during games this season.

Evans says his fitness regime is playing a part in his renaissance.

“I have had a long run of games and I feel a lot better for it,” he told the Manchester Evening News. “I have also done a lot of work in the gym trying to get stronger and quicker. I feel physically fit.

“In the past when I have been in and out of the team after a few sprints it then takes you five or ten minutes to get your legs back. They turn to jelly and you cannot just get there.

“At the end of matches in the past I have been sat in the changing room for about half an hour trying to get my legs back together because they’d be shaking.

“But I have been doing extra work. Getting into training early and I am feeling the benefit.”

Man Utd boss Ferguson unimpressed by scruffy journalists

Wed, 02/22/2012

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson is unimpressed with the dress sense of today's journalists.

Ferguson finds the current generation scruffy.

"There are lot of young guys in now and they are unshaven with, what do you call it, stubble and denim,” he said.

McIlroy: Evans came through slump to prove himself Man Utd class

Wed, 02/22/2012

Manchester United defender Jonny Evans has won praise for the way he's bounced back this season.

Former Northern Ireland boss and United ace Sammy McIlroy has always kept a keen eye on his fellow Belfast-born Reds player.

And McIlroy believes Evans’ response to his grim period of form has put him in good stead.

“I think Jonny is now playing the best football of his career at United,” Sammy told the Manchester Evening News.

“What has happened to Jonny happens to a lot of players. You do well in your first year or two after you breakthrough into the side and then you can hit the wall.

“When you hit a bad patch all eyes are on you at Old Trafford. There is no hiding place. Then it is a matter of how you respond as to whether you’ll make it at United long term.

“I don’t know whether he took things for granted a bit after having such a good start. That can happen but you very soon learn that you cannot afford to live on past glories and memories. It is all about what you do in in your next game.

“Jonny has risen to the challenge he faced. He has been a bit of a scapegoat in some people’s eyes but he has shown his critics that he is here to stay.

“When you have the kind of setback Jonny went through with his form, then it is a make-or-break time in some respects. You have to stand up and be counted if you want a future at United and he has certainly done that."

Man City tell new chief Soriano to BETTER Man Utd finances

Wed, 02/22/2012

Former Barcelona supremo Ferran Soriano will be told to take on Manchester United - both on and off the pitch - by Manchester City.

Soriano is expected to be named new chief executive officer at City.

And the Manchester Evening News says the Blues’ next head man – expected to be former Barcelonasupremo Soriano – has been briefed that the owners want City to more than double the club’s income in the next 10 years.

And that means taking the Reds’ place as regular Premier League winners and Champions League contenders, as well as leapfrogging them at the top of the English clubs’ rich list.

City had a turnover of £153million for last season, but this season are expected to move above Spurs and Liverpool and into the European top 10, with only United, Chelsea and Arsenal ahead of them in England.

Chicha happy as a supersub

21/02/2012

Javier Hernandez insists he has no qualms about acquiring the “super sub” tag following an explosive first 18 months with Manchester United.
The Mexican striker made his competitive debut for the Reds in August 2010 and has already netted 29 goals, with 10 of those coming off the bench. It’s an incredible record, especially given that, in the club’s history, only one player has bagged more goals as a substitute.
“Ole Gunnar Solskjaer,” Hernandez says, smiling. “I know.”
But even Ole took his time scoring them. Solskjaer’s 28 goals off the bench came from 150 substitute appearances; Chicharito already has 10 from 30.
“I don’t know what makes me effective as a substitute,” Hernandez says. “I don't have the answer.
“In football you can’t always come up with a reason, because of this or that. I don’t play any different [whether I start a game or come on as a substitute].
“If I play one minute, 10 minutes or 90 minutes I try to play the same. My mind is always to do my best and help my team. There are some times in the game when we need to score and perhaps I have had a little bit of luck.”
But is Hernandez concerned that the more he makes an impact from the bench the less he’ll find himself in the starting XI?
“I just want to help my team,” he says. “I don’t care if I’m on the bench. Last year I was on the bench at the start and then I was in the team towards the end of the season. The gaffer has the answers.
“Every player in every team wants to play as many minutes as possible, but I don’t care if I start or I’m a substitute. I just want to enjoy it. I am living a dream to play for Manchester United.”
Nobody would dispute that, although Hernandez has, at times this season, struggled to reach the dizzying heights he scaled in his maiden season as a Red. It’s understandable, though: a concussion injury suffered on the summer tour to the USA disrupted the Mexican’s pre-season preparations, while Danny Welbeck’s emergence as a leading figure in United’s frontline has further limited Chicharito’s opportunities.
The 23-year-old still has nine goals in 26 appearances in 2011/12, mind you, and remains upbeat.

Rio wants the last laugh

21/02/2012

Rio Ferdinand has an added motivation to sustain his success with United: a peaceful school run.
The United and England defender comes into contact with his own children’s schoolmates each morning, leaving him open to playground ribbing whenever the Reds have suffered a setback.
“When you're walking up the path to school, dropping your kids off, you don't want little kids laughing at you or making fun of you because you've been beaten by so-and-so,” Rio explained toManUtd.com and Press Association. “But that's what happens if you lose games or get knocked out of competitions.
“Young kids can be unforgiving. There's nothing in their minds that goes: 'he plays football, leave him alone'. If anything, they're even worse for it. But there's still a little kid inside of me who has pride and an ego and wants to make sure I can walk up that path and nobody can say anything to me because we've won.
“As soon as that feeling goes it's time to pack up my boots.”
Ferdinand was almost certainly on the receiving end of youngsters' mirth back in December when United tumbled out of the Champions League. At the time, he insisted the Reds would respect the Europa League and now maintains the squad wants to go all the way and win the competition.
“We just go out there and perform to the best of our capabilities,” Rio said. “We know we've got fans to go out and impress and we want them talking about us in the right way.
“The management feel the same. As players we demand the highest standards of ourselves and if we don't meet them the dressing room isn't a nice place to be.”

Loan move for Kuszczak

Tomasz Kuszczak

Loan move for Kuszczak

United goalkeeper Tomasz Kuszczak will spend the remainder of the season at Championship side Watford on an emergency loan deal.
The 29-year-old has found first-team opportunities limited this term, with duties between the posts largely shared by David De Gea and Anders Lindegaard.
Kuszczak, who began his professional career in Germany with Hertha Berlin, arrived at Old Trafford in July 2006, initially on loan from West Bromwich Albion before the deal was made permanent the following summer.
Tomasz has made 61 appearances for the Reds but will now have his sights set on helping Watford, currently in 14th place in the Championship, avoid relegation. He will face a battle for the gloves, though. Current Hornets stopper Scott Loach, a former England Under-21 regular who was also named in Fabio Capello's senior squad in August 2010, is almost ever-present between the posts at Vicarage Road, playing 31 of the Hornets' 35 fixtures so far this season.

Petrucci making strides

21/02/2012

Reserves boss Warren Joyce is delighted with the way Davide Petrucci is developing at Old Trafford.
The former Roma youngster has captained the second string on a number of occasions this term and has already scored three goals since the turn of the year.
It has been extremely encouraging to see the 20-year-old get his career firmly back on track after two lengthy spells on the sidelines with pelvic problems obviously affected his momentum.
"We've seen a lot of progression in the way Davide is playing," Joyce told ManUtd.com. "It's concided with his fitness really.

Today At Old Trafford

Today At Old Trafford

The editorial team for ManUtd.com, United Review and Inside United provide regular updates from the home of the Reds...
Tuesday 21 February
18:47 Today, Tomasz Kuszczak left Old Trafford for Watford on loan. Three years ago today, the Pole was in goal as United conceded a league goal for the first time in 15 games. Roque Santa Cruz was the culprit who finally breached the Reds' record-setting defence but the champions still beat Blackburn 2-1 with goals from Rooney and Ronaldo (him again). (AB)
18:22 Fond memories are being stirred this evening with Cristiano Ronaldo scoring at the Luzhniki Stadium - I presume for the first time since he headed home United's opener in the 2008 Champions League final. His current employers Real Madrid are leading CSKA Moscow 1-0 as I type this. (AB)
17:13 No rest for Phil Jones on his 20th birthday. After training today, he faced the MUTVcameras at Carrington and was asked what he's hoping to get as a present. To see his answer, click the Tuesday news link on the left. (AB)
15:53 Full-time: Wigan Reserves 0 United Reserves 0. A dreary affair on a difficult pitch would be my summary. Look out for my slightly longer match report on the proceedings very soon on ManUtd.com. (AM)
14:50 Half-time: Wigan Reserves 0 United Reserves 0. Still goalless and largely uneventful at Robin Park Arena, although Warren Joyce has already made a personnel change. Tom Thorpe came on for the injured Reece Brown shortly before the interval. Wigan have been the better side with the Reds reallyonly having one attempt to speak of -  a blocked Ryan Tunnicliffe shot. (AB)
14:41 Latest score: Wigan Reserves 0 United Reserves 0. A turgid game so far, I'm sorry to say, with little to report except for Will Keane clearing a Latics effort off the line. Hopefully the imminent half-time break - we kicked off at 14:00 - will enable Reds coach Warren Joyce to inject some life into the proceedings. (AM)
14:38 Birthday-boy Phil Jones spoke about the Duncan Edwards references in a live webchat for ManUtd.com earlier this season. "It's incredible to hear people saying that. To be mentioned in the same sentence as Duncan Edwards is a huge honour. He was playing well before my time but I certainly knew about him growing up. It inspires me to go on and become a better player. It makes me want to work even harder in training." (AB)
14:35 Some may find this uncanny but Phil Jones - a young man whose playing style has drawn the occasional comparison with Duncan Edwards - was born 20 years ago today. Happy birthday, Phil. (AB)
14:30 It was remiss of us not to mention this earlier - but today is the anniversary of Duncan Edwards' death in 1958. One of the greatest players to ever wear the shirts of Manchester United and England, big Duncan fought on for 15 days after sustaining dreadful injuries in the Munich air disaster on 6 February. Like the seven Reds team-mates who also perished, he will never be forgotten. (AB)
14:10 Wigan - like Man City - have a different name for their reserve team. The Latics' second strong go by the monicker of Wigan Athletic Development Squad or WADS for short. City have EDS, where Eis for Elite. Apparently. (AB)
14:07 Good to see Ryan Tunnicliffe back in a United shirt this afternoon. He's still on loan to Peterborough but like Josh King against Man City a fortnight ago, he's getting some much-needed match practice. Ryan's not had much of a look-in with the Posh's first team lately. (AM)
14:00 Here's the United Reserves' side: Johnstone, De Laet, Fryers, Fornasier, M Keane, Brown, Vermijl, Tunnicliffe, W Keane, Petrucci, Lingard. Subs: Thorpe, Coll, Giverin, Massacci, Veseli. (AM)
10:22 The referee for Thursday's Europa League tie with Ajax will be Damir Skomina from Slovenia. He took charge of Napoli's 2-1 defeat of Manchester City in the Champions League earlier in the season. (AM)
10:15 The Reserves are in action this afternoon at Robin Park against Wigan with kick-off at 2pm. We'll bring you all the updates here and, of course, a full report soon after the final whistle on ManUtd.com. (AM)
Monday 20 February
18:13 We'll leave you for today by directing you left to the latest MUTV news bulletin, read by Mark Sullivan, who was once likened to Jedward by Reserves boss Warren Joyce. (JT)
18:09 As you may have read in our What The Papers Say round-up today, BBC Radio 5 Live are broadcasting an in-depth interview with Sir Alex at 20:00 GMT tonight. In it, the Reds boss says that when he retires, he wants to finish on a high. "I think you always want to go out on a winning note," he says. "Hopefully we can do that. I don't know howlong I can last now but if my health stays up, I don't think another two or three years would harm me any." (JT)
15:24 I've just returned from Carrington, where I interviewed Fabio for this week's Ajax programme. As you might expect, he was full of mischief and gave some great answers - especially to questions from the fans. Keep an eye out for the results in Thursday's edition of United Review. (Steve Bartram)
12:31 And one final note on the youth team - forward Tom Lawrence is on the stand-by list for the Wales Under-21s' Euro qualifier against Andorra on 29 February despite being out of action recently due to injury. (AM)
12:24 On the subject of the Academy, it's been interesting to note how many players are on the books with surnames of United representatives from the past. Liam Grimshaw, Louis Rowley, Matthew Wilkinson, Ben Pearson, Josh Harrop, Sam Byrne and James Wilson would all be following in the footsteps of namesakes if they eventually make it into the first team. Of course, Jack Barmby (Nick), Kenji Gorre (Dean) and Luke Hendrie (John) are all sons of former footballers. (AM)
12:23 Just a note that the Under-18s' home fixture with Wolves on Saturday 25 February is due to go ahead as planned despite the FA Youth Cup tie against Charlton taking place on the following Wednesday (29 February). (AM)
11:15 Jonny Evans, who has been in splendid form recently for United, has been included in new Northern Ireland manager Michael O'Neill's first squad - for the Windsor Park clash against Norway on 29 February. (AM)10:36 Larnell Cole has been forced to pull out of the England Under-19 squad with the hamstring injury he sustained in the Reserves' win against Bolton last week. Sam Johnstone is still in contention to play in the match against Czech Republic at Leyton Orient's Matchroom Stadium. (Adam Marshall)
10:10 Sir Alex's men may not have played at the weekend, but there was still some new content on ManUtd.com to enjoy. If you missed it, the U18s lost the derby 3-1Nicky Butt and Bryan Robson praised Tom Cleverley and we ran interviews with milestone man Ryan Giggs and assistant boss Mike Phelan. (JT)
10:05 Ajax warmed up for their visit to OT and the onerous task of overturning a 2-0 deficit with a comfortable league win at the weekend. Frank de Boer's side beat NEC Nijmegen 4-1 at home, with burly striker Dmitri Bulykin bagging two of the goals. No injury news to report from the Dutch camp. (JT)
09:58 Morning all. How was your weekend? Twiddling your thumbs without a United first-team game to enjoy? It was a unusual feeling at this time of season, I must admit. Anyway, it's Monday and we don't have to wait too much longer until the Reds are in action again. (James Tuck)

Young demands double United success

Ashley Young insists Manchester United need to win Premier League & Europa League

 February 19, 2012

Ashley Young believes Manchester United need to win both the Premier League and Europa League this season for it to be classed as a success.
The Red Devils are well positioned in both competitions, sitting just behind local rivals Manchester City at the top of the table whilst securing a 2-0 win over Ajax in Europe on Thursday night.
After a group stage knockout in the Champions League, as well as defeats to Crystal Palace and Liverpool in the League and FA Cup respectively, pressure has been on Sir Alex Ferguson's side to secure success in other competitions.
And Young insists United are thriving on the pressure that's currently being placed on the champions, with plenty of big games on the horizon both at Old Traffordand away from home.
"Winning the title race and winning this competition [the Europa League] is what we would consider a successful season. That's what we're involved in and that's what we want to do," Young told the Manchester Evening News.
"It's the biggest team in the world and you always want to beat the big teams. It's like a cup final for other teams, especially at Old Trafford. So we know there's always pressure. It's how you deal with it.
"Every game is going to be a tough game from here. As long as we go out there, concentrate on ourselves and produce the sort of performances that have been coming in the last few weeks it will be good enough to win the title."
The England international has only just returned to full fitness for his side, but appears back to his best for this season's run-in after scoring against the Godenzonen at the Amsterdam Arena in midweek.
