12.08.11 | tribalfootball.com

Newcastle United are ready to return to Manchester Unitedto further strengthen their squad.
Former United winger Gabriel Obertan signed for Newcastle this week and Toon manager Alan Pardew is planning a new raid for one of the Frenchman's ex-teammates.
The Evening Chronicle says Pardew is eyeing United striker Kiko Macheda.
Macheda could become available for loan before the market shuts.

West Brom boss Hodgson: No Hargreaves bitterness towards Man Utd

12.08.11 | tribalfootball.com

West Bromwich Albion bossRoy Hodgson says Owen Hargreaves bears no grudge against Manchester Unitedover his release,
Hodgson is interested in signing the free agent.
"No, he was very sanguine about the whole affair, and I think he just wants to play football again," said the formerLiverpool and Fulham manager.
"He was bitterly disappointed the way he had to leave English football, but he didn’t speak badly about anybody.
"He was just more concerned, I think, to convince us, or maybe he’s trying to convince other teams, that ‘Listen, I’m a fit player, you can use me’."

West Brom boss Hodgson reveals positive talks with ex-Man Utd midfielder Hargreaves

12.08.11 | tribalfootball.com

West Bromwich Albion bossRoy Hodgson remains keen on released Manchester Unitedmidfielder Owen Hargreaves.
Baggies manager Hodgson does not know whether joining his squad appeals to the former England player, who may have other options to consider.
Hodgson said: "When I left at 6pm on Tuesday, Owen was just about to leave at the same time.
"And we made it clear: ‘Look, we’ve done the test, we agree with you, and your man Alex, that the knee’s okay and you can play football. And of course if you’d like to come and play for us that would be lovely.
"But whether or not our offer is going to be interesting to him, that’s what I don’t know.
"He was looked at by our doctor, Mark Gillett, who was at Chelsea, who’s quite an eminent person in his field.
"And we had all the test results that he of course brought with him as well. And we spoke to his man, Alex McKechnie, who had been rehabilitating him for the last year.
"He didn’t go through a stringent medical, but he was looked at by someone who should know what he’s talking about."
West Brom’s technical director Dan Ashworth has tabled an offer to Hargreaves.
"I know Dan has e-mailed a proposal to Owen, but I don’t know what the proposal is," Hodgson said.

Man Utd tell Sneijder: Come back to us when you are serious

12.08.11 | tribalfootball.com

Manchester United have pulled back from negotiations for Inter Milan starWesley Sneijder.
The Daily Mail says United have given up on their bid to sign Sneijder fromInter Milan.
United manager Sir Alex Ferguson had been hoping to make the Dutch international his final signing of the summer.
But senior Old Trafford sources told the Daily Mail that United have now grown tired of a saga that has dragged on since the end of last season and have decided to pull the plug on the deal.
With 27-year-old Sneijder sitting right at the wrong end of United's age limit for new signings, Ferguson and chief executive David Gill have decided to walk away from a player who was demanding in excess of £200,000-a-week in wages.
The only way that United's interest will be rekindled is if Sneijder dramatically drops his financial demands later in the window.
However, United do not expect this to happen and Old Trafford sources last night stressed that the club will do 'absolutely nothing' to resurrect what would have been the big Premier League transfer of the summer.
It is clear that Inter and Sneijder would have to make the first move.

Ex-Man Utd, Forest midfielder Stewart a target for Hearts

12.08.11 | Andrew Slevison

Michael Stewart has emerged as a strong transfer target for new Heart of Midlothian manager Paulo Sergio.
The 30-year old is a free agent after his short-term contract with Charlton Athletic expired at the end of last season and he could now be on his way back to Tynecastle after departing Hearts for Turkish club Genclerbirligi last summer.
Stewart has been training with another former club, Hibernian, this summer in order to remain fit and reports suggest that talks have opened with Hearts about a possible third return to the Edinburgh club.
Stewart first joined the club on loan from Manchester United, following his short stint atNottingham Forest, back in 2004.

Vidic concedes Man City are threat to Man Utd title defence

12.08.11 | tribalfootball.com

Manchester United skipperNemanja Vidic does expect a title battle with neighboursManchester City.
United might have won a huge amount of praise for their performance in Sunday's Community Shield, but other than a minor trophy, their captain knows it will count for nothing in the hard weeks that lie ahead.
"Chelsea are always there," he toldCNN.
"They have experience. They have players who have been together for a few years.
"They know each other very well and will be hungry to win the title this year.Manchester City have a few signings. They will be even stronger this year.
"They have been together for a year and will be a bigger rival."

Ferguson convinced his young Man Utd squad can only improve

12.08.11 | tribalfootball.com

Manchester United bossSir Alex Ferguson is convinced his young squad will further improve this season.
Ferguson, speaking before an audience in Dunfermline on behalf of the Mary Leishman Foundation, believes his youthful United team can claim another championship.
"I am confident because I trust the players and I feel we have had a nucleus of young players developing for a while," Ferguson said.
"We had a few out on loan last year and they have come back as better players. We had 13 players under the age of 22 in the United States [for pre-season games]. So it is looking like a very young squad. Darren Fletcher is one of the older ones, at 27."

Blackburn signing Goodwillie: Rooney? I am more like big Dunc!

12.08.11 | tribalfootball.com

Blackburn Rovers signing David Goodwillie has no problem being likened toManchester United starWayne Rooney.
Rovers boss Steve Kean made the comparison yesterday.
Goodwillie would love to emulate Rooney’s feats but his career mirrors that of his hero Duncan Ferguson.
The former Everton and Newcastle striker was also born in Stirling, played for the same boy’s club team and then starred for Dundee United and Rangers before heading to England following troubles on and off the pitch.
Goodwillie felt he needed a change too after gaining a similar bad-boy image.
He said: “I needed a fresh start in a new country.
“A big factor in coming here is being away from the spotlight.
“If I’d stayed in Scotland, I don’t know if I could have gone shopping in Tesco without getting hassled.
“It would be a bonus to achieve what Duncan did.
“I think Rooney is in a different world, but it’s always a nice compliment to be compared with him.”

Carrick welcomes competition from Man Utd teammate Cleverley

12.08.11 | tribalfootball.com

Michael Carrick has no problem fighting for his place at Manchester United.
Carrick has welcomed the challenge presented by young midfielder Tom Cleverley.
"I'm not fearful of that at all, I embrace it," he told Sky Sports News. "That's what this club is all about. It's a clean slate now, we've had a bit of a turn-around with the playing staff and we've got a really young squad now. There's always competition for places here, that's what makes it so great.
"You've got to be on top of your game to be playing and that's probably how we've had the success over the years. If you want to be involved you really have to be at your best."

Wigan boss Martinez happy for Cleverley Man Utd success

12.08.11 | tribalfootball.com

Wigan Athletic boss Roberto Martinez is happy to see Tom Cleverley making waves atManchester United.
Cleverley returned to Old Trafford in May after a season-long loan with Wigan, and Latics boss Martinez had nothing but praise for his former charge.
The Spaniard said: "There's a real satisfaction because he was a really important player for us but it's not a surprise. His talent was quite obvious but he was an example for us in terms of his character, his daily standards and his personality.
"If you ask anyone at Wigan, we knew he was going to have that impact going back toManchester United. Probably we didn't expect it that quickly and that speaks volumes for how highly he's rated.
"We all wish him well and we'll always remember his best moments with us. He's a special man and without doubt he'll be a special footballer for England."

Blackburn boss Kean: Goodwillie just like Man Utd star Rooney

12.08.11 | tribalfootball.com

Blackburn Rovers boss Steve Kean has likened new signing David Goodwillie toManchester United starWayne Rooney.
Goodwillie signed for Rovers this week from Dundee United.
He told the Lancashire Telegraph: “David has always been put on a parallel with a young Wayne Rooneyand you can see that when you see him play. He can score all types of goals, not just nice build ups and a tap in.
“He can create a goal for himself, score from outside the box, he can chip them in, pass them in, smash them in. We don’t mind how they go in because that is what we need at the club, a natural finisher, and that is something he is.
“David was always very high on our list of summer signings. He was the top young target, because we were trying to get an established player that was going to come in and get the goals and a young player to compliment him - alongside the players we have already got.
“We wanted two senior ones and two younger ones and so we have Mauro and David as young ones and Jason Roberts as an older one. We can mix these guys together.”

Desperate Sneijder camp contact Chelsea, Man City as Man Utd pull out

12.08.11 | tribalfootball.com

Inter Milan starWesley Sneijder has priced himself out of a move toManchester United - and to the Premier League.
The Daily Mail says United have dropped their plans to sign the Dutchman due to his contract demands.
United's decision to back off explains the fact that Sneijder's representatives have this week been hawking him around United's Barclays Premier League rivals Chelsea andManchester City. Neither club have an expressed an interest, with City sources describing the overall cost of the deal as 'mind blowing'.
With Sneijder desperate to leave Inter, it now seems very possible that the World Cupfinalist will find himself stuck at the San Siro when the transfer window closes at the end of the month.

Man Utd skipper Vidic accepts difficult season start must be navigated

12.08.11 | tribalfootball.com

Manchester United captainNemanja Vidic admits they face a massive test in the opening weeks of the season.
With TottenhamArsenal and Chelseato face in the opening five weeks, and both Liverpool and Manchester Citylooming in October, this time around the test of their credentials will come quickly.
"I am just hoping we reach our form from the beginning of the season," Vidic told CNN.
"We have a really tough schedule and some tough games in the first few weeks but if we perform the best we can, I believe we can win the title again."

Vieira insists Man City can beat Man Utd to title

12.08.11 | tribalfootball.com

Manchester City coach Patrick Vieira insists they can take the Premier League title away from Manchester United.
While he notes many experts are predicting the champions will once again be from the other side of Manchester, at Old Trafford, Vieira has faith in his own club.
"We can win the title," he said. "We have improved since last year. Winning the FA Cup and finishing third has given us the belief.
"We believe we can challenge Chelsea,Manchester United and the rest of the teams to lift the championship."

Man Utd skipper Vidic: Ferguson stability inspires our success

12.08.11 | tribalfootball.com

Manchester United skipperNemanja Vidic says the key to their success is the stability manager Sir Alex Fergusonbrings.
Vidic believes United have a major advantage on their rivals through the longevity of Ferguson.
"The manager brings stability," he said.
"He built the road that all players follow. Even now we have three new players but the system is already there. This is the great thing.
"Other clubs have a problem because they change their coach every year and new players come in. Sometimes they have a problem to build a team."

Man Utd boss Ferguson: Fletcher success down to sheer determination

12.08.11 | tribalfootball.com

Manchester United bossSir Alex Ferguson says Darren Fletcher will not be ready for their Premier League opener against West Bromwich Albion.
Ferguson revealed the Scotland international is stepping up his rehabilitation in what is also a boost to his country ahead of Euro 2012 qualifying matches next month.
"Darren is back training now," Ferguson said. "He will play for the reserves on Monday. He has put weight back on and is doing great.
"When Darren joined us at 15, he had a lot of problems with his ankles and missed a lot of foundation work at the club. He had the resolve and perseverance after that to get to where he is, he has worked his socks off. He is a big-game player; he excels in temperament and discipline, obeying instructions to the letter of the law. In big games you need that."

Wigan boss Martinez: Man Utd youngster Cleverley a throw-back

12.08.11 | tribalfootball.com

Wigan Athletic boss Roberto Martinez saysManchester United midfielder Tom Cleverley is a throw-back to the classic footballers of the '80's.
Until Sir Alex Ferguson has him back under his wing for a little longer, Martinez probably knows Cleverley’s game as well as anybody. But even he was amazed at his mature performances in recent games for United.
“With his technical ability, he could have been brought up in Holland or Spain,” said Martinez.
“And tactically he is one of the most clever players I have ever worked with. He can play in different positions and do different jobs. But even I was surprised in the Community Shield when he played in a central role.
“I know how much he can affect games but coming on for United and doing so well was a surprise. His mentality is the real strength of Tom.
“No doubt the bigger challenge, the bigger the achievement.
“It is difficult in the Premier League to find a player at his age who thinks as clearly as he does. He loves the game and he is refreshing.
“It is like going back 20 years and finding a player who just loves playing football.”

Blackburn boss Kean determined to keep hold of Spurs, Arsenal target Samba

12.08.11 | tribalfootball.com
Blackburn Rovers boss Steve Kean hopes to keep hold of defender Christopher Samba.
Tottenham and Arsenal have both been interested in the defender but with Rovers already having sold Phil Jones to Manchester United, Kean does not want to lose another centre-back.
Kean said: "Chris is only a few months into a five-year contract. There have been rumours every single week but we have not had any bids at all, not one, and long may that continue.
"We know it's life without Phil, and if you lose somebody at the last minute it can be very difficult.
"We hope that won't happen, we hope that's the only centre-half we have lost this season and that they phone doesn't ring and that Chris is happy with us."

Man Utd striker John Cofie adds to rep with reserves brace

Manchester United striker John Cofie has added to his reputation with a double for the reserves in their 3-1 win over Bangor.
Cofie netted twice with Ravel Morrison adding a third in a 3-1 victory for Warren Joyce's team, who continue to look in good shape during the pre-season.
Togo trialist Souleymane Mamam again featured for an hour, while Italian Davide Petrucci caught the eye in central midfield.

Arsenal ace Cesc will take Guardiola Barcelona spending past €350M

The arrival of Cesc Fabregas from Arsenal will see Barcelona's spending under coach Pep Guardiola go past the €350 MILLION mark.
With a €40 million agreement in the offing, Barca so far have spent €311.5 million since Guardiola's appointment four seasons ago.
Some have been spectacular successes as in the case of former Manchester United defender Gerard Pique, who came in exchange for €5 million and ex-Sevilla fullback Dani Alves, who arrived for €29m, but superior performances led to bonuses being added to make the fee €34.5 million.
But there's also been spectacular flops like Henrique, Keirrison, Martin Caceres and Alex Hleb.

Man Utd star Nani: I will stay and work hard to be best ever Nani

Nani insists he's happy at Manchester United.
The Portugal winger admits his brace to win the Community Shield against Manchester City last Sunday was a career highlight.
"It was a unique feeling. We were losing 0-2, we played an excellent second half, I scored two goals and it will stay in my memory. I am working for Nani to be the best ever," said the midfielder.
"The most important thing is I'm fit, if I train well I'll play. The coach knows this, he knows me well, whoever is playing well and physically will be selected. He is not coaching to intimidate us.
"It's good to know that big clubs are interested, but I'm happy where I am."

Man Utd’s Berbatov delighted to play entertaining football

Dimitar Berbatov says he is happy to continue playing compelling football with Manchester United.
The Bulgarian striker believes that football should be about entertainment, for both the fans and the players, and feels it is important to provide that by refraining from a boring playing style.
“I'm always ready to entertain," he told MUTV.
"It's because when I watch a game, I don't want to see people falling asleep during it.
"Even if I watch a game, if it's boring for me, it doesn't matter if it's Real Madrid, Barcelona or some other big club playing, I just switch off the TV. I don't like boring games, I want entertainment and that's what the fans want as well.
"That's what we try to give them and I can only speak about myself and try to give entertainment to everybody."

Competition for spots will make Man Utd even stronger says Carrick

Michael Carrick is confident that further competition for starting spots will make reigning English champions Manchester United stronger this campaign.
Sir Alex Ferguson has added Ashley Young, David de Gea and Phil Jones this summer whilst young guns Danny Welbeck and Tom Cleverley are back and much-improved following loan spells at Sunderland and Wigan Athletic respectively.
Midfielder Carrick feels that the extra jockeying for places will give United plenty of depth heading into a brand new seasons which starts at West Bromwich Albion on Sunday.
“I'm not fearful of that at all, I embrace it," he told Sky Sports News. "That's what this club is all about.
"It's going to be tough but every season is as tough as each other.
"It's a clean slate now, we've had a bit of a turn-around with the playing staff and we've got a really young squad now.
"There's always competition for places here, that's what makes it so great. You've got to be on top of your game to be playing and that's probably how we've had the success over the years. If you want to be involved you really have to be at your best.
"It's great to see the young lads coming through. I really enjoy seeing the young lads progressing and getting a chance in the first team.
"Danny (Welbeck) did really well at the weekend and so did Tom, so it certainly bodes well for the future. They'll be chomping at the bit to get a lot of football this season."

Inter Milan keeper Julio Cesar urges Sneijder to reject Man Utd

Julio Cesar has urged Inter Milan teammate Wesley Sneijder to reject a move to Manchester United.
Along with Sneijder, Samuel Eto'o also could leave for Russians Anzhi.
Brazil goalkeeper Julio Cesar said: "I hope they can stay with us, because they are two great champions.
"I hope in my heart they will stay."

Chelsea skipper Terry: Man Utd winning desire inspires me

Chelsea skipper John Terry insists they can overhaul Manchester United and win back the Premier League crown.
The arrival of new manager Andre Villas Boas has given the club new direction and Terry cannot wait to get going.
"The new manager has been great," the England skipper said at the official launch of the new season in London on Thursday morning.
"We had a great tour of Asia with all our games won. When Andre came in he expressed the importance of winning.
"We only won one game last pre-season. Andre has brought in new and fresh ideas that will hopefully take us through to the end of the season.
"He's got an emphasis and demeanour about him. A lot of the lads knew him from when he worked here with Jose (Mourinho) but he's gone away and done his own thing and we give him a lot of respect.
"I'm worried about a lot of teams this season. Everyone has strengthened. Manchester City and Manchester United have bought in some good players, Liverpool too. There are six or seven players who can really push and have a chance of winning the trophy.
"We can catch Manchester United. They have been the benchmark for 20 years. We pushed them to the end last season but missed out. We all see their quality and hunger they and their manager have.
"It drives me on and seeing them lift the trophy still hurts to this day. I want to get my hands back on it."

Man Utd legend Schmeichel: Right time for Sir Alex to spend big

Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel says manager Sir Alex Ferguson is right to spend big this summer.
Schmeichel has backed Ferguson’s spending spree – which will exceed £80m this summer if a deal for Wesley Sneijder can be agreed.
“With Edwin van der Sar, Paul Scholes and Gary Neville leaving, it is the right time to invest a lot of money,” Schmeichel told the Manchester Evening News. “It shows our competitors we have money to spend.
“We won the championship and we are going to spend so much money because we want to retain it and we want as much success in the Champions League as we had last year.”
United are hoping to bring an end to one of the transfer sagas by offering a highly incentivised contract that includes enhanced image rights in order to convince Sneijder to lower his salary demands of more than £200,000 a week.
Even without Sneijder, Schmeichel believes a 20th title is on its way to Old Trafford after the signings of Ashley Young, Phil Jones and David de Gea.
“When you spend the amount money they have on a side that won the title, it is only fair that they should be favourites,” he said, adding that his former side will be able to cope without Scholes
“Everyone leaves at some point. The strength of this club is that it always puts someone else in. They might not be the same. They might be a little bit better or a little bit worse, but the club always survives.
“We’ve had so many players retiring or leaving for other clubs, but we go on to win trophies.”

Ex-Man Utd youth boss Harrison: What Ferguson says to parents of potential recruits

Eric Harrison says Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson's attitude to the academy hasn't changed.
Harrison was in charge of the David Beckham generation at United.
He says Ferguson has a simple philosophy when it comes to recruiting players at Academy level.
"Something he used to say to parents when trying to get them to sign was there's three things he'd promise," revealed Harrison to manutd.com.
"1) They'd get a good apprenticeship. 2) If they're good enough, they'll play in the first team. 3) If they're not good enough, he'll find them a club so they can have a career in the game. He's never let anyone down in that respect."

Man Utd legend Neville: Liverpool title challenge just fans wishful thinking

Manchester United legend Gary Neville says a title challenge is beyond Liverpool.
Neville says Reds fans shouldn't get excited about this season.
He told The Sun: "Liverpool are getting to that point where they need that success now. The club demands it.
"Going back to 1992-3 you just become very desperate and very wanting. You become needy.
"You feel like it's a goal, it's a challenge, rather than something to get excited about. You can see exactly what Kenny Dalglish is trying to do there. He has brought an identity back to the club.
"Whether they can go on and win the title... I'm not sure whether that will happen this season."

Inter Milan chief Paolillo casts doubt on Man Utd move for Sneijder

Inter Milan chief Ernesto Paolillo has cast fresh doubt over Wesley Sneijder's sale to Manchester United.
Paolillo says they won't sell Sneijder with Samuel Eto'o now set to join Anzhi Makhachkala.
He told Bloomberg: "Samuel Eto'o will leave and Wesley Sneijder will not be sold."
Anzhi have made a big-money bid for Cameroon striker Eto'o.

Berbatov: I am here to entertain Man Utd fans

11.08.11 | tribalfootball.com
Manchester United striker Dimitar Berbatov feels it's important he tries to entertain fans whenever on the pitch.
Clearly one of the most skilled strikers in Europe, the Bulgarian admits he is turned off by watching dull matches at home as he appreciates exciting play.
"I'm always ready to entertain," he told MUTV. "It's because, I don't know, when I watch a game, I don't want to see people falling asleep during it. You know, if it's a boring game.
"Even if I watch a game, if it's boring for me, it doesn't matter if it's Real Madrid, Barcelona or some other big club playing, I just switch off the TV. I don't like boring games, I want entertainment and that's what the fans want as well.
"That's what we try to give them and I can only speak about myself and try to give entertainment to everybody.
"It doesn't matter if it's a goal or the way I play, this is the first thing I try to do and that is what the boss is trying to tell us before games as well.
"I enjoy the game, you know, and we must work hard and concentrate as well."

Inter Milan ace Sneijder: I would not say no to Man Utd

11.08.11 | tribalfootball.com

Inter Milan ace Wesley Sneijder admits he "wouldn't say no" to Manchester United should they come calling.
Sneijder says there's been little formal negotiations with United over a move to Inter this summer.
"The situation has changed little since last year. There are possibilities that I can stay at Inter this year, but whenever there is an important offer, Inter could consider it and could also sell," said the Dutchman.
"(But) No, it does not depend on me, but on Inter."
Asked ff United called, Sneijder replied: "I certainly would not say 'no'."
