Man Utd boss Ferguson: Ferdinand knows Smalling, Jones after his spot

Sat, 10/15/2011

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson feels his young players can lift senior men likeRio Ferdinand to new heights.

While Ferdinand remains first choice for the Reds, competition for places in the back four is intense with the likes of Chris Smalling, Phil Jones and Jonny Evans all pushing Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidicfor a regular starting berth at the heart of the defence.

“Competition is so fierce now with these young lads coming through,” Ferguson told manutd.com.

“Jones, Smalling and Evans have all been outstanding. Rio and Vida are well aware they are going to have to play well to keep their places.”

Man Utd boss Ferguson: Liverpool real title threat

Sat, 10/15/2011

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson feels Liverpool are a title threat this season.

United go to Anfield today top of the table.

"Four or five teams will challenge for the title and you always have to include Liverpool in that," said Ferguson.

Tottenham boss Redknapp: No immediate plans for Man Utd defender Ferdinand

Sat, 10/15/2011

Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp has cooled talk of a move for Manchester United defenderRio Ferdinand.

Ferdinand's injury problems mean he has played a limited part in the champions' season so far, and his contract is due to expire this summer, but Redknapp has played down suggestions he will bid for either of the duo when the transfer window opens.

"I haven't even thought about Rio to be honest," Redknapp said.

"I signed him as a kid. I love Rio as a boy and a player, but it's not something we have ever enquired about.

"It's going to be difficult for him to leave Man United isn't it?"

Nani: Ronaldo so important for me early on at Man Utd

Sat, 10/15/2011

Manchester United star Nani admits he leaned heavily on Real Madrid ace Cristiano Ronaldo when first arriving at Old Trafford.

Nani has arguably been United's best player this season. He is happier off the pitch as well in the Cheshire home he shares with partner Daniela and their two dogs (a Labrador and a Chow Chow).

It's in contrast to his traumatic introduction to Manchester, even though Ronaldo was already there to help his friend adapt to the new surroundings.

"The toughest part was to live alone, not speaking the language," Nani told the Daily Mail. 'There was a phase when I was living at Cristiano's house and it was very good. There were always cheerful people and we had everything – swimming pool, jacuzzi, tennis, ping-pong. I never missed my family.

"But later I had to leave Cristiano's to make my own life. It was hard because it was a big house and by night it seemed like a witch's house.

"I was even afraid of being home alone. Sometimes I didn't even leave the room. I went to bed early without eating properly because I didn't want to have dinner alone."

Liverpool 1-1 Manchester United: Late Chicharito header denies Steven Gerrard winning goal on return to starting line-up

A slow burning derby which ended at a thrilling pace sees United stay top of Premier League and Kenny Dalglish's side on the fringes of Champions League spots in fifth

EPL - Liverpool vs Manchester United,Steven Gerrard and Darren Fletcher
Steven Gerrard marked his first start of the season for Liverpool with a controversial goal before Chicharito levelled up the affair for Manchester United in a 1-1 draw which saw Wayne Rooney start on the bench following his sending off in Montenegro.

With the exclusion of both Andy Carroll and Wayne Rooney both managers adopted a conservative 4-5-1 formation and this cautiousness meant that both sets of players struggled somewhat to find the space and time to create.

One side-effect of this claustrophobic nature was the success of the attacking play of the full-backs. A run of this nature from Patrice Evra allowed the Frenchman to pass Martin Kelly and deliver a cross for Phil Jones. The summer signing from Blackburn - who lined up in an unfamiliar midfield position - couldn’t keep his far post header on target and it swung wide of Pepe Reina’s left post.

The tempo increased in the second half, the aggression was evident and controversy was just round the bend when a corner kick from Gerrard was met by the head of Dirk Kuyt. His effort could have been goal bound had it not hit the arm of Evans. Anfield rose to appeal for the penalty but the referee waved away their protests.

With the increased intensity the game came alive and that man Adam was relishing the situation. Another run from deep, similar to that in the first half, caused trouble for the visitors defence and it was up to Rio Ferdinand to halt it. A clip to the left heel of Adam was enough to bring down the Scotland international and set up a free kick on the edge of the penalty area.

Ferdinand was furious with the seemingly clear decision until replays illustrated that little, if any, contact was made. Nonetheless Gerrard strode forward, took the ball and made it clear it was he who was going to take the kick. His curling low shot was launched towards the wall and for some inexplicable reason, Ryan Giggs jumped out of the way and that was the path the ball took beyond De Gea.

Sir Alex Ferguson had now to play his hand and used all three substitutions in the following minutes; Wayne Rooney, Nani and Chicharito were all required to produce an equaliser.

Chicharito was quick in his input with only minutes after his introduction he brought Manchester United back into the game with a powerful header. A cross from the left was aimed for the middle of the area where Danny Welbeck lost Jamie Carragher to flick the ball onto the far post, where the Mexican waited to nod the away side back to parity and set up a scintillating finish.

Dirk Kuyt forced De Gea into a diving save from close range, and in the dying seconds Martin Skrtel lashed over, before Jordan Henderson headed onto the roof of the net as the Reds chased victory.

But the winner was not to arrive, and United were able to end their recent losing run at Anfield, and move a point clear at the top of the table.

TEAM NEWS: Steven Gerrard starts for Liverpool against Manchester United while Wayne Rooney is dropped

The talisman is back in the Reds' starting XI against Sir Alex Ferguson's top-of-the-table side meaning £35 million striker Andy Carroll is dropped to the substitutes' bench
Carling Cup,Steven Gerrard,Brighton & Hove Albion v Liverpool
Big team news from Anfield ahead of Liverpool's clash with Manchester United is that Steven Gerrard will start as he continues his recovering from a groin injury, while Wayne Rooney must settle for a place on the bench.

Gerrard came on as a substitute in the Merseyside derby before the international break and is now fit to start, meaning that Andy Carroll has been dropped to the bench despite scoring his first Premier League goal of the season against Everton.

The midfielder will be making his first start for Liverpool in 7 months as they look to build on their three consecutive victories over Manchester United at Anfield.

The Red Devils have made six changes from their last win against Norwich before the international break, with Wayne Rooney and Javier Hernandez dropping to the bench.

England striker Rooney will have to be content with a place on the bench after recent well-publicised issues on and off the pitch, meaning Welbeck starts up front on his own.

Phil Jones has been selected ahead of Michael Carrick in the holding midfield position as Ferguson looks to keep the returning Gerrard quiet.

Liverpool: Reina, Kelly, Enrique, Carragher, Skrtel, Lucas, Adam, Gerrard, Downing, Kuyt, Suarez.

Subs: Doni, Bellamy, Carroll, Henderson, Spearing, Robinson, Agger.

Manchester United: De Gea; Smalling, Ferdinand, Evans, Evra; Park, Jones, Fletcher, Young; Giggs; Welbeck

Subs: Lindegaard, Rooney, Nani, Anderson, Hernandez, Carrick, Valencia

Manchester United's Sir Alex Ferguson challenges Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic to retain their places

Old Trafford chief says the experienced defenders know they are under pressure to keep out Jonny Evans, Chris Smalling and Phil Jones, who filled in impressively in recent weeks
Rio Ferdinand & Nemanja Vidic, Manchester United
Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has challenged Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic to keep their places in the starting XI following the emergence of Phil Jones and Chris Smalling.

The Red Devils have enjoyed a fine start to the campaign despite being without the experienced duo of Ferdinand and Vidic for large periods, and the Scot says they will now face a constant battle to start in the centre of defence.

"Rio and Nemanja are well aware they are going to have to play well to keep their places," Ferguson told The Mirror.

"Competition is so fierce now with these young lads coming through."

Ferdinand has been in the spotlight in recent weeks after England manager Fabio Capello chose to leave out his former captain from his latest squad, and the 69-year-old believes it could spell the end of his player’s international career.

"Rio is back to his best form, he has trained really well and his experience will be vital," the manager enthused.

"The England thing is unfortunate because he missed a couple of appearances through injury and maybe Fabio is looking to the future.

"Some managers think that way. There is nothing wrong with that."

Vidic is also in contention to return to the starting XI after playing 90 minutes for Serbia in their recent shock defeat to Slovenia.

"I spoke to Nemanja yesterday and it was probably the right type of game to come back in," said Ferguson.

"He had to get a game sometime. He was training very well before that game and has come back feeling fine."

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson expected Wayne Rooney to face tough ban from Uefa

Old Trafford chief has responded to claims that the England striker has received a harsh punishment for his red-card in Montenegro, saying the three-game suspension was inevitable
EURO 2012 Qualifier,Wayne Rooney,Montenegro v England
Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson says he expected Wayne Rooney to get a three-game from Uefa following his red-card for England against Montenegro.

Rooney’s ban has prompted widespread debate, with the talismanic striker now set to miss the group stage of the European Championships through suspension - and Sir Alex believes Rooney’s nationality was not in his favour.

"I expected a three-match ban, I must admit," the Red Devils' boss told MUTV.

"Sending offs usually carry that and I didn't think there was going to be any leniency towards England.

"He is going to miss the group games for England, which is a blow for him and England."

Many Premier League managers have voiced their opinions on Rooney’s ban and whether the Manchester United striker should be on the plane to the Championships.

"The three-game ban is a joke," Rooney’s former manager, David Moyes, told reporters.

"There is no doubting that Wayne shouldn't have done what he did.

"But I thought they [Uefa] would have near enough let it go," said the Everton boss.

Sunderland manager Steve Bruce believes Rooney’s temper is an attribute that every world-class player has.

"Wayne Rooney is a great player because he has got that little bit of edge about him. All the great players have,” Bruce told reporters.

"In one way or another, they are always on the edge, it's what makes them a great player. Let's make no mistake, Wayne Rooney is our great player, he's our total, world-class player."

Wed, 10/12/2011

Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney rates Brazilian Ronaldo as the greatest attacker ever.

Man Utd boss Ferguson reluctant to discuss reasons for Rooney red

Wed, 10/12/2011

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson is reluctant to blame Wayne Rooney's England dismissal on his father's arrest last week.

It has been suggested Rooney reacted due to the pressure he was under following his father's arrest on Friday, not that Ferguson was offering any opinion on that matter.

"I have no idea," he said.

"It is difficult to say with these things. I will see him tomorrow."

Man Utd handed double boost as Vidic, Cleverley to make Liverpool

Wed, 10/12/2011

Manchester United have received a double boost ahead of their trip to Liverpool.

Nemanja Vidic AND Tom Cleverley could be back for Saturday's trip to Anfield.

Vidic made such good progress with United's coaching staff last week that he forced his way into the Serbian side that lost 1-0 to Slovenia last night.

And that has put the centre-back bang in the frame to return to the United line-up against Liverpoolthis weekend.

Yet it is the recovery of midfield rookie Cleverley — out since injuring foot ligaments in September's 5-0 win at Bolton Wanderers — which has really staggered the medical team.

LA Galaxy ace Beckham eyeing future Man Utd role - thanks to Zidane

Wed, 10/12/2011

LA Galaxy star David Beckham is keen to return to Manchester United in a front office role.

Becks says he would love to go back to Manchester United in a sporting director role.

Becks has seen Zinedine Zidane return to Real Madrid to take up an advisory and coaching post.

And when the LA Galaxy ace was asked about following former team-mate Zidane's lead he said: "I'd love to do that.

"The best memory of my career came in 1999, no doubt, when Manchester United won the treble.

"In my opinion, no club can repeat that feat."

Brown: Sunderland must start games in better fashion

Wed, 10/12/2011

Wes Brown says Sunderland must start games in better fashion.

The 31-year-old has made eight appearances for Sunderland so far since joining in the summer and doesn't want to repeat the experience of falling behind so early.

The former Manchester United defender explained to safc.com: "We're not going to win games if we keep going 2-0 down, but we did well to come back and maybe we could have pushed on from that.

"If we can start games better then it obviously follows that we will have a much better chance of winning games.

"As a defender, conceding early goals isn't something you like to see."

Pearce understands Man Utd boss Ferguson over Welbeck

Wed, 10/12/2011

England U21 coach Stuart Pearce accepts Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson's decision to block Danny Welbeck's call-up.

Pearce insists there was absolutely no animosity over the issue.

United have been one of the most obliging clubs in the Barclays Premier League when it comes to releasing young players for international games and Pearce maintains that will continue to be the case.

"I spoke with Alex," Pearce said. "I phoned him on Friday evening after the game had finished. I apologised for waking him up with it being so late and I asked whether it would be possible for us to have Danny.

"But he said no. I knew I was taking a gamble asking the question. He said 'listen, he’s flown to Montenegro. You are now asking me to fly him back, then fly him to Oslo when we have got a big game at the weekend'. He had already been on the pitch in Montenegro.

"He declined the offer and I can quite understand that. I had to ask the question, to make sure I was doing my job properly."

Man Utd skipper Vidic to quit Serbia

Wed, 10/12/2011

Manchester United captain Nemanja Vidic has hinted he's ready to announce his international retirement.

Vidic missed a second-half penalty as his country chased a win in Slovenia that would have guaranteed a place in the play-offs.

"It's time for a change of generations, and for some older players to say goodbye to the Serbian kit," said Vidic.

Vidic was making his first appearance since injuring a calf in United's opening game of the Barclays Premier League season.

Patrice Evra urges Manchester United to regain defensive integrity ahead of Liverpool clash

The Frenchman wants the backline to be as solid as they were before the victory over Chelsea last month and concedes that the team's youthful prospects are threatening his place
Patrice Evra, Manchester United
Manchester United full-back Patrice Evra insists the club need to regain their focus at the back ahead of the clash with Liverpool after recent shaky performances.

United were arguably lucky not to concede against Norwich City in their last game before the international break and were left concerned after allowing three goals against Swiss side Basel in the Champions League after taking a two-goal lead.

With a visit to Liverpool coming this weekend, Evra is demanding a return to United’s usual high standards at the back.

"I want us to go back to the way we were playing before the Chelsea game," the Frenchman told reporters.

"We have to defend together, be very compact and not give our opponents too many chances.

"I was disappointed after the Chelsea game because they created a lot of chances and if it had finished 4-4 no-one could have said anything."

With Evra being one of the more senior players in what is now a youthful United squad, the left-back admits he is having to fight for his place.

"I'm only 30 but I feel like the oldest player in the team," he said.

"I just have to show the young players that I'm still here and I want to play every game.

"I need to prove I am still fit because they are young. Maybe they have more energy and think they can steal my place.

"Of course, though, you also have to help them and talk to them if anything is wrong. We are here to protect them and to show them that it's easy to reach the top, but to stay there is the most difficult thing.

"But before we can say anything to the young players, we have to show our own example on the pitch because the competition is really fierce.

"The boss is not afraid to put the young lads in and it's working well."

Manchester United's Ryan Giggs wins Golden Foot 2011 award

Old Trafford veteran has scooped the prestigious prize and will have a permanent mould of his footprints put on Monte Carlo's 'champions promenade'
Prince Albert II of Monaco; Ryan Giggs, Golden Foot
Manchester United's Ryan Giggs has won the Golden Foot award for 2011.

Prince Albert II of Monaco presented the trophy to the midfielder after he came out highest in the record number of votes cast on the competition's website.

The 37-year-old will have a permanent mould of his feet put on Monte Carlo’s ‘champions promenade’, which includes some of the biggest names in footballing history such as Diego Maradona, Zinedine Zidane and Alfredo Di Stefano.

Giggs paid tribute to Sir Alex Ferguson after being presented with the award, and also failed to rule out retirement at the end of the season.

“He's [Ferguson] hard but fair. He demands a lot from his players as he does from himself," said Giggs at the ceremony.

"He is the best manager and it's great to have had him there throughout my career.

“It's a great honour to win such an award and to have my footprints alongside some of the greatest football players is a real privilege.

"I have been fortunate to play alongside great players, play for the greatest manager and play for the best club in the world.

“At the moment I am still enjoying my football so I have not thought about what I will do when I finish, but if it all finished tomorrow I could say that I have had a fantastic career and wouldn't swap it with anybody."

Giggs beat former team-mate David Beckham to the prize as well as fellow nominees Gianluigi Buffon, Didier Drogba, Samuel Eto'o, Iker Casillas, Javier Zanetti and Carles Puyol.

The Golden Foot award is given to veteran footballers who are at least 29 years old who excel individually or collectively throughout their career.

Danny Welbeck: Manchester United want to win everything

Striker reveals the never-say-die attitude he was raised with at Old Trafford and how his relationship with Tom Cleverley has helped both players adapt to the first team
Danny Welbeck - Manchester United (Getty Images)
Manchester United striker Danny Welbeck says that he has been brought up with a winning mentality at Old Trafford and that the club want to beat every team that they come up against.

The 20-year-old had been in fine form for United this season up until a hamstring injury picked up during the 8-2 victory over Arsenal forced him out for a number of weeks, but he has returned well and secured an England call-up.

"It is really important at United that you’ve been brought up with that winning mentality," he told the club's official website.

"It’s bred into you to win everything you take part in. That’s Manchester United for you, a never-say-die attitude as you see time and time again.

"We’re going into different games but there’s always one aim – to win the game. We don’t go into a game and try to get one point thinking that’s okay.

"Being at United, you always get quite disappointed if you don’t get all three points as you believe you can go into every single game and win it.

"I felt I’d really come into my own when I scored my first goal of the season against Tottenham. There’s no better feeling than scoring in front of the Stretford End. I aim to emulate that feeling so many more times."

Welbeck also said that Tom Cleverley breaking into the first team at the same time has helped him because they have a good understanding both on and off the pitch.

"We’ve been playing with each other since we were little kids. Just to come through to the first-team is a big positive. We’re good friends on and off the pitch, we’ve got a good relationship.

"We’ve been at England Under-21s together and, if we’re rooming, it’s us two together. We are close friends and have got a good understanding on the pitch.

"He knows my game and I know his. He’s come up through the same Academy, with the same coaches and it’s great.

"The coaches take credit for everything. From the Under-9s coach Eddie Leach up to the Reserves with Warren Joyce – and Paul McGuinness with the Under-18s, who is a really good coach and probably taught us the main trade of our game."

However, the past few months haven't been all positive for Welbeck, who was injured right as his season threatened to take off, as well as suffering defeat with England at the European U-21 Championships.

"I was devastated to pull up like that [against Arsenal], after getting a few starts under my belt in Premier League games and feeling really good.

"I got the scan done and, from then on, we knew what the problem was. I couldn’t sit back and moan. I had to get into training every single day and just follow the programme the physios put down for me. You’ve just got to make sure you come back as flying as you were before you got injured.

"[The European Under 21s Championship is] a big tournament and we were very disappointed. We lost in the last game, which I think was probably our best performance as a team.

"It was a bit disheartening to go out in the last couple of minutes – very disheartening, in fact."

But Welbeck has now earned a call-up to the senior squad, and is back in the Red Devils team in what he calls an "exciting time" to be a United player.

"We’ve got off to a good start and I think the team is playing well. We have been really attacking, getting the ball back, winning it and attacking.

"It’s exciting to be part of it and in and around this squad. I think the morale is really good. Everyone’s really up for it."

The Sunday Mirror says Vidic is winning the battle to make his long-awaited return against Liverpoolnext weekend.

Manchester United skipper Vidic has been out since the opening weekend of the season after suffering a calf injury at West Bromwich Albion.

But Vidic was given permission by United to join up with the Serbia squad and is in line to start against Slovenia on Tuesday.

If he comes through that game without any problems, Vidic is likely to make his comeback for United at Anfield against their arch rivals next Saturday.

Man Utd legend Neville: Off-field dramas did NOT cause Rooney red

Sun, 10/09/2011

Manchester United legend Gary Neville insists off-field matters did not spark Wayne Rooney's Montenegro madness.

Neville wrote in his column for the Mail on Sunday: "I know how Wayne’s mind works. He’ll be angry with himself. I could see it in his eyes. He was thinking: ‘I’ve been here before; I can’t believe I’ve just done that.’

"People will say he has problems with this or that, but that’s rubbish and a lazy conclusion. There’s no way he could have played like he did in the first half if he were not focused. These incidents usually stem from the fact that he’s got such incredible expectations.

"He’s playing for England, supposedly one of the superior nations, against Montenegro, a country of 625,000 people, and in the second half they were getting on top of us, so he became isolated up front. Wayne would have been incredibly frustrated by that. He has that streak in him, has done for 10 years and you’ll never take it away from him."

Man Utd legend Neville admits: I wish I was going to Liverpool

Sun, 10/09/2011

Manchester United legend Gary Neville admits he wishes he could pull the boots on again for his old team's trip to Liverpool.

Neville wrote in his column for the Mail on Sunday: "Wayne Rooney and Manchester United will be relieved England don’t have another game this week so that they can prepare for what is always one of the toughest games of the season: the trip to Liverpool on Saturday.

"Kenny Dalglish and the Liverpool players will feel the same. As a player, it was always the fixture I looked forward to most and the trip to Anfield is one of the biggest tests of a player.

"In the past three seasons, Liverpool have been fantastic in this fixture, so United players will need no reminding of what to expect. The atmosphere will be fantastic and it should be a great clash.

"My only disappointment is that I no longer have a chance to play in it."

Man Utd star Smalling almost did not make it at Maidstone

Sun, 10/09/2011

Manchester United star defender Chris Smalling was never guaranteed a place at non-league Maidstone United.

Smalling signed for Fulham from Maidstone before moving onto United last year.

“It took a lot of persuading for the first-team management to take more of a look at him,” admitted Darren Lovell, Maidstone’s secretary, in the Sunday Express. “They wanted old players with experience and they didn’t fancy him against the old-time, gnarled centre-forwards.”

Peter Nott, then in charge of the reserve team and now Whitstable manager, was Smalling’s greatest advocate. But he faced a battle to persuade Maidstone boss Alan Walker.

“The Ryman League is a very, very physical league and Chris was always six foot-plus but very, very wiry and had no real muscle on him,” Nott said. “And as a centre-half you are up against some big burly players, there were some concerns if he could handle it physically.”

Man Utd fullback Evra putting France ahead of Liverpool showdown

Sun, 10/09/2011

Manchester United fullback Patrice Evra may risk injury - and a place at Liverpool - for France.

Evra faces a battle to prove his fitness for France's qualifying decider against Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Les Bleus can secure their ticket to Poland and Ukraine with a point against Safet Susic's side, who will pip them to top spot should they spring a surprise with victory in Paris.

Man Utd boss Ferguson happy to win 1-0 for rest of season

Sun, 10/09/2011

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson isn't bothered if his team aren't entertaining.

He says he would be more than happy with boring 1-0 wins for the rest of the season.

United have scored 24 goals in their seven league games so far.

But Fergie is more concerned about the seven league goals conceded. He said: “Let me tell you, I’d be quite happy winning every game 1-0.

“We’re playing a wee bit open, that’s for sure, both in the league and in European games. We are very attack minded at the moment, but we have to be tight at the back.

“The defenders we have been using this season are young, remember, so they are going to get better as the campaign goes on.”

Man Utd defender Ferdinand insists his fitness is good

Sun, 10/09/2011

Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has no doubts about his long-term fitness.

Ferdinand has just returned to action after another spell on the sidelines.

But declaring himself fitter than ever, Ferdinand told the Daily Star Sunday: “Last season I played 19 games on the run and got through the Christmas period.

“Getting that far was important for me, proving to myself that I could maintain a level of fitness.

“But when you’re out, you’ve got to draw on the experience of getting through that period and make sure you’re concentrating on getting back into the team, rather than thinking about your replacements and other things.”

Ref willing to stand up for Man Utd ace Rooney following Montenegro red

Sun, 10/09/2011

The man who sent Wayne Rooney off in Montenegro is willing to stand up for the Manchester Unitedstar.

Friday's result sealed England's place in the Euro 2012 finals, but there were fears Rooney would be banned for two - or even all three - of the first-phase group games.

However, German referee Wolfgang Stark said: "Maybe it will help Rooney the way he acted by accepting my decision without any fuss.

"It was a straight red card. I had no hesitation. Everyone saw what happened and Rooney knew by his reaction. He accepted my decision without dissent and walked straight off the pitch.

"I will submit my report about the sending-off. After that I will have no more input and it will be up to UEFA to decide what to do."

Man Utd agree to upgrade Chicharito deal to £80,000-a-week

Sun, 10/09/2011

Manchester United are ready to upgrade the contract of Javier Hernandez.

The Daily Star Sunday says Hernandez expects to agree a new five-year contract withManchester United within a month.

His new deal will see his weekly pay rocket from £25,000 to £80,000.

Chicharito’s original contract still has three years to run – but United agreed in June to review that deal after his fantastic first season at the club.

Those talks were delayed due to United’s pre-season tour of the USA and the striker’s injury problems.

But that situation is set to be resolved with both sides keen to reach an agreement quickly.

Tottenham boss Redknapp convinced he can land Man Utd veteran Ferdinand

Sun, 10/09/2011

Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp is chasing Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand.

The Daily Star Sunday says Chicago Fire want Ferdinand to follow David Beckham to the MLS and the England defender is said to be weighing up his next move.

A source close to the player said: “Rio has some thinking to do concerning his future. He still has plenty of ambition and playing in America would certainly open up a new chapter in his life.

“But he respects Harry. He had a big influence on Rio as he progressed as a footballer at West Ham.”

Man Utd legend Neville: Forget Rooney - England players simply not good enough

Sun, 10/09/2011

Manchester United legend Gary Neville says Wayne Rooney's on-field discipline isn't England's problem.

He explained in his column for the Mail on Sunday: "Don’t get me wrong, he can’t hide from the mistake and he was right to apologise in the dressing room afterwards. But what gets me is that now everyone will get caught up in the circus and furore surrounding the sending-off.

"The most disappointing thing about his red card is that it distracts from the major issue.

"With England, we’re always looking for an excuse; we’re always caught up in the minor rather than the major. The real issue is that the spine of the team is not good enough, as it stands, to take on Spain, Italy, France or Germany at Euro 2012."

Spurs join Man Utd, Chelsea in Barkley battle

Sun, 10/09/2011

Tottenham have joined the transfer scramble for Everton youngster Ross Barkley.

The Daily Star Sunday says Spurs join Manchester United and Chelsea on the trail of a player who has already represented England at Under-16, 17, 19 and 21 level.

And it would be no surprise if Manchester City showed their hand, too and joined the fight for him.

But Everton boss David Moyes insists he won’t sell one of the most-coveted players in the country.

Moyes doesn’t want to see history repeat itself with Barkley, 17, doing what Wayne Rooney did and joining United at a similar age.

Tottenham's Harry Redknapp claims Wayne Rooney's red card in Montenegro could cost England dearly at Euro 2012: 'He just can't go around doing that sort of thing'

The Spurs manager believes the Manchester United star could miss the entire group stages in Poland and Ukraine and insists the striker's suspension will be a "massive blow"

The Manchester United forward was dismissed by referee Wolfgang Stark for a petulant reaction during Friday's qualifier in Podgorica and will miss at least the first group game at next summer's tournament

Redknapp fears the Three Lions could even be without their talisman for three games in Poland and Ukraine and believes the suspension could end up costing Fabio Capello's side.

"It's hugely disappointing," Redknapp wrote in his column in The Sun.

"He could be missing for the entire group stage and the rush of blood could end up costing him and England dearly.

"A likely two-game ban at the start of the Euro 2012 finals is a massive, massive blow for England.

"He just cannot go around doing that sort of thing. We thought we'd seen the last of it but I guess he had his angry head on after all.

"Rooney is a ferocious competitor for Manchester United and for England but there has to be a line.

"I was thinking how mature he looked and how the situation involving his dad and his uncle had clearly not affected him and he had moved on."

Goals from Ashley Young and Darren Bent helped secure a 2-2 draw for Fabio Capello's side that was enough to book their spot in the Euro 2012 finals and Redknapp had words of praise for the attacking trio of Young, Rooney and Theo Walcott.

"The three forward players all did well," he added. "Ashley Young, Theo Walcott and Rooney - aside from his sending off, of course.

"There is pace, energy and talent in that area and they are progressive players."

England's Gary Cahill: It will be a massive blow to be without 'phenomenal' Wayne Rooney for start of Euro 2012

England centre-back Gary Cahill has conceded that it will be a "massive blow" to be withoutWayne Rooney for at least one game at the Euro 2012 finals after the Manchester Unitedstriker was sent off against Montenegro on Friday.

The former Everton star was shown a straight red card for kicking out at Miodrag Dzudovic during the second half and although the Three Lions surrendered a two-goal lead to draw 2-2, the result was enough to book their place in Poland and Ukraine as group winners.

Despite Rooney's red card souring England's qualification, Cahill hailed the achievement of reaching next summer's finals although admitted that it will be a "big blow" to be without the 25-year-old for the start of the tournament.

"It will be a massive blow with the talent Wayne has," Cahill said. "He is phenomenal. It is going to be a big blow at the finals.

"Going down to 10 men was tough but the main thing was we got the job done in difficult circumstances.

"When something like that happens, you've got to deal with it and carry on and that's what we did.

"I hope everyone sees it as a job done. We've done terrifically well to get to the tournament and we are looking forward to it now."

The Bolton defender also praised the performance of Manchester United defender Phil Jones, who made his international debut for Fabio Capello's side in Montenegro.

"I thought Phil did really well, he got forward when he could, he defended well in really difficult circumstances," Cahill added.

"It was a hard game for him to get his first cap. It was a big game and conditions didn't help him.

"But he has already looked at home with Manchester United this season since moving there.

"He did really well in Montenegro. He really stood up to the task and seeing youngsters coming through and doing well is great for England.

"I think we are in really good shape. We've got young players coming through now with a blend of experience as well.

"That will stand us in good stead for the tournament and a couple more games before we get there. I think we will do really well."

England's Rio Ferdinand: Wayne Rooney will bounce back from Montenegro red card 'as per usual'

The Manchester United striker was sent off for the second time in his Three Lions career, although his club team-mate insists qualifying for Euro 2012 is the most important thing
EURO 2012 Qualifier - Montenegro vs England, Wayne Rooney

Manchester United and England centre-back Rio Ferdinand has backed team-mate Wayne Rooney to bounce back "as per usual" from his sending off against Montenegro.

The 25-year-old was given his marching orders by referee Wolfgang Stark during the second half in Podgorica, a game which the Three Lions drew 2-2, despite being two goals ahead, to seal their passage to the Euro 2012 finals.

Former Everton striker Rooney was shown a straight red card, his second in an England shirt, for petulantly kicking out at Miodrag Dzudovic during the second half of the game.

It is not the first time that the Manchester United star has seen his temperament called into question although Ferdinand, who was left out of the squad for the Three Lions' final qualifying game, has backed the forward to bounce straight back.

Ferdinand Tweeted: "Wazza will bounce back as per usual don't worry. We are through so let's concentrate on that which is of more importance than any individual."

England's John Terry promises a focused Wayne Rooney against Montenegro

The striker's father and uncle were arrested on Thursday but the skipper says there will be no problems, and admits he is looking forward to playing with Phil Jones and Kyle Walker

England captain John Terry allayed fears that Wayne Rooney may be distracted againstMontenegro on Friday.

The Manchester United forward's father was arrested on Thursday as part of a Scottish Premier League investigation into betting irregularities last season.

However, Terry is certain that Rooney will be able to "switch off" from things outside of football and will be eager to play.

"Wayne’s focused on the game tomorrow," Terry told reporters Thursday.

"I think we all realise the importance of that. It’s important for him to go out there and play his football which he loves doing and he’ll always be fully focused on the football field so that’s all that matters to us.

"When you’re on the pitch and the training pitch you can switch off away from anything in life, but tomorrow’s game is the most important thing and we all realise that and appreciate how difficult the game’s going to be."

The Chelsea captain has a few new players under his wing this time around, as Manchester United defender Phil Jones and Tottenham right-back Kyle Walker are both expected to earn their first caps for country on Friday, and the skipper is looking forward to helping them.

“Yeah, of course, I think that’s part of being a captain [that] when the guys come in the squad that you make them feel at home and welcome, but they certainly [have] come in and expressed themselves on the football field anyway," he said.

"They’re full of confidence and both playing really good football at their clubs as well, so I think they’re very sure of themselves that if they do get the opportunity tomorrow they’ll give a very good performance."

Meanwhile, Terry is unsurprised by the re-emergence of club team-mate Frank Lampard, who, after a slow start to the season, scored a hat-trick against Bolton last weekend.

"I’ve been very pleased but not surprised at all because I knew he could do it," he added.

"At times you do get left out, it tests your character and I think he’s proved all of his critics wrong, which I said he would, and come out and been incredible for Chelsea.

"He's scored some great goals but his performances have been just as good so I knew he would do it and he will continue to do that for a very long time, I’m sure of that."

The 30-year-old defender also spoke of his dream to carry England into a major tournament, a personal ambition he does not confuse with team goals.

"It's obviously my dream to take the England side into a major tournament," he said. "With that in mind, on a personal goal, that’s my target. Collectively the team is the main priority and we must get there."

"Whether that’s a draw or a win we must do the right thing tomorrow.

"We’ve had good preparation, good away form as well, so we’re full of confidence and playing well, hence why we’re top of the group. We must just get ourselves over the line tomorrow."
