The 26-year-old says there’s something "special' about getting late goals and hopes opening day victory can provide a platform for champions to defend their title

Ashley Young has revealed he was delighted with his role in Manchester United’s win over West Brom on Sunday, and hopes the result will provide the platform for his side to mount a successful Premier League title defence this season.
Wayne Rooney opened the scoring for United with a low drive from outside the box, but David de Gea’s error in allowing Shane Long’s tame shot to sneak under him looked to have given the Baggies a share of the spoils, until Young’s incisive run and cross late on ricocheted into the net off Steven Reid to snatch all three points for Sir Alex Ferguson’s men.
Young admitted he would have preferred to have had the game won before then, but believes the win can give United a solid foundation to their season.
"I would rather goals came before then," he told reporters. "But it is always special when goals come late. Then you have to defend the lead, which is what we did. It was always vitally important to get off to a winning start. A lot has been said about our away form last season. If we can build on this result, I am sure we will be out to retain the title again."
Young’s pace and movement troubled the West Brom defence all game, and it was the former Aston Villa man whose pass led to Rooney’s opener.
"It was a great team goal," he added. "We wanted to capitalise on that and continue our good work but couldn't get that second goal. We were always going to create chances though and eventually we got the winner. I will try to claim it but it is more important to get the three points."
