Wrighty’s big-match verdict- Chelsea 2 Man City 1

Wrighty’s big-match verdict - Chelsea 2 Man City 1

Q: What does this result mean for Man City?
THIS loss is a reminder of how hard it is to win a title.

Chelsea know this fact — and so do Manchester United and Arsenal.

But City remain in unchartered territory and defeat in West London will be an intriguing test of their mettle. This is where the pressure starts. Big time.\Before the game, I did not see City losing but now they are just two points ahead of United at the top and Alex Ferguson will be rubbing his hands with glee.

City now play at home to Arsenal which is a massive, massive game. The way the Gunners are playing right now, I can see them winning at the Etihad and that will really throw things wide open.

I felt a bit sorry for City, though, as the decisions did not go their way last night. They should have been given a penalty when leading — and it all went against them.

But as we know, you do not win the Premier League just by having the best players. You need a bit more than that and City now have to answer some questions.

Q: Can Chelsea still win the title from here?

THEY still have one hell of a job on their hands.

But at least this win gives them some belief and now I'd like to see everyone at the club — from AVB to the experienced players — pulling in the same direction. That is the only way they can continue to close the gap on City.

If Chelsea are a club which is split or has cliques, they do not have a chance. But becoming the first team to beat City in the Premier League this season will have given them a massive boost.

Chelsea's next two away games are at Wigan and Spurs.

They will be tricky in different ways but I think Villas-Boas will fancy his chances of delivering six points. The match at White Hart Lane in nine days will be absolutely fascinating.

One win does not make everything fine at Chelsea but the squad is experienced enough to know what it takes to win the title.

Whether they will manage to do so remains to be seen.

Q: Who was your star player and why?

FOR ME, Ramires. He was athletic and did well, causing City problems.

He also broke up a few City attacks when they moved forward. I also thought Oriol Romeu did well in midfield but Ramires was the pick.

Let's be honest, it's taken him time at Stamford Bridge to really win over the locals. I didn't realise he'd be quite as good as this — certainly not from some of his displays last season.

But he does seem to have so many qualities to his game. He gets forward more than I expected, because I thought he was a player who preferred playing more deeply.
Ramires clearly feels that the new manager of Chelsea has plenty of faith in him. He looks very, very good. And I'm sure we will see some more excellent performances from the guy over the next few weeks.

Q: Is supersub now the role Lamps must play?

HE may be effective in this role because, after all, Frank remains a great player.

However, top players want to play as much as possible, no matter what their age. And I know for a fact that Frank will be no different.

He showed his bottle and class by coming on as a sub and scoring the winner with a confident penalty.

But regardless of leaving Stamford Bridge as the hero — not for the first time in his career — Frank would not have been totally happy last night.

He would have felt he could have made a positive contribution in all 90 minutes for Chelsea. While I cannot see Frank starting in Euro 2012 for England, he will still feel that he can play every game for his country and will be frustrated if he earns a supersub tag for this club over the next few months. He'll be dying to start every game.

Kop score an AON goal - Wayne Rooney

13-Dec-2011

LIVERPOOL have risked the fury of their fans by cosying up to the shirt sponsors of bitter rivals Manchester United.
Kop chiefs ditched a local firm and put their insurance with AON — the company which pays United £20million a year.

And that means they are now indirectly contributing to the transfer and wages kitty of the team who last season finally pulled clear of Liverpool by winning their 19th English title.

A source said: "It's an incredible thing to do.

"When the Liverpool fans find out, they will be furious that the club is effectively helping United.

"Working with the sponsors of your biggest rivals looks like an own goal."

Clubs take out insurance policies worth millions on stadiums, property and against the possibility of players being seriously injured or having to quit the game.

Carrick: Now watch us go

Carrick: Now watch us go

MOVE OVER ... Michael Carrick says Man United are clicking into top gear.

MICHAEL CARRICK insists Manchester United are in a prime position to launch a New Year assault on the Premier League title.
The midfielder points out the Red Devils are in better shape right now than they were at the same stage last season, as they continue their pursuit of Manchester City.

Carrick said: "City have set the standard and not dropped many points but there's a cluster of clubs behind them which we're heading up, so we're quite happy with the way things have gone.

"Of course we'd prefer to be on top but we're actually in a better position than last season and, hopefully, we'll be even closer to them come the end of the year."

United are actually five points better off after 15 games than they were at the same stage last season, when they went on to claim a 19th title.

Since losing the Manchester derby 6-1 at home, United have won five of their six league games and drawn the other against Newcastle.

While they are City's closest challengers, Carrick acknowledges there are others not far behind.

Carrick, 30, said: "We've seen a lot of the big teams move up the table — Tottenham have been on a great run, Arsenal have come on strong and Liverpool are picking up points too.

"It may stay like that for a bit — even going into February or March you can have three or four involved and then it ends up being only two.

"The important thing for us at the moment is making sure we stick close to those teams and, hopefully, get that top spot as soon as we can."

Carrick also has his eyes on the New Year FA Cup date with neighbours City as he aims to add the missing medal to his title and Champions League gongs.

He said: "It was typical of the Cup for that tie to come out, wasn't it? I'm one of a few players in the dressing room who haven't won the FA Cup and it's a trophy we all really want.

"We're fully aware of how big the occasion will be and, while there's an element of wanting to put things right after the last two games against them, we'll just be focused on getting through to the next round. Hopefully, we can do that."

Carrick missed last week's disastrous European defeat at Basel due to suspension but he was back for the 4-1 league win over Wolves and in the same good form that he has been showing in recent weeks.

He puts it down to getting more regular starts of late.

Carrick said: "It's been nice to be playing two or three games a week and getting into a rhythm and I've been enjoying my football.

"Everyone wants to be playing all the time but we all understand the situation and know the boss will rotate things.

"You've just got to keep producing the kind of form that will keep you in the team."

Basel's interim coach HEIKO VOGEL was given the job on a permanent basis last night — five days after leading them into the Champions League last 16 at United's expense.

Vogel, 36, helped the Swiss take seven points from their final three group games to qualify for the knockout stage.

Enrique convinced he has backing of Roma board

13 Dec 2011

AS Roma coach Luis Enrique feels he has the confidence of the board after their 1-1 draw with Juventus.

Enrique was asked about a comment he made during yesterday’s Press conference, in which he said “never say never” about possibly resigning.

“If I look back at the recent history of Roma, then Luciano Spalletti and Claudio Ranieri both resigned. When I talked about this, I said that in football you can never say never, but today I saw a faithful group of fans.

“The club believes I have the opportunity to do something. I will continue working until I see there is a problem with the club.”

Blackmailers demanded £5,000 from Coleen Rooney for a stolen camera containing hundreds of family photos, a court heard.

The camera, which held snaps of the WAG, her Manchester United and England striker husband Wayne and their son Kai, went missing at a Black Eyed Peas concert she went to in May.

Prosecutor Deborah Gould told a jury at Manchester crown court: “Anyone who saw the contents... would have realised they had a commercial value because of the Rooneys’ celebrity.”

Jennifer Green, 25, and Steven Malcolm, 42, deny blackmail and handling stolen goods. Green’s boyfriend Lee Platt, 28, has already admitted the charges and is in custody.
The court heard a man by the name of Liam Price rang the club claiming to have bought the Samsung camera and was asked to return it.

Rooney’s agent Paul Stretford then called him back and offered to pay costs plus expenses but was asked for £1,000.

He said in a statement read to the jury: “I told him the newspapers would not buy stolen goods, so there was no market for this.

“I told him he was being very silly and I would call the police if he continued.”

Three weeks later, the club was again contacted by “Liam Price” who now wanted £5,000 for the memory card.

On the same day, he also rang Hello magazine and offered to sell the card.

A tape of the conversation was made by editors who advised the man to return it to the Rooneys.

Experts matched Platt’s voice to “Liam Price’s”, the court heard.

The police were called and an undercover officer posing as the Rooneys’ publicity agent met with Malcolm at a hotel.

A folder he produced containing thumbnail prints of about 400 images from the camera had Green and Platt’s fingerprints on it.

The trial of Malcolm, of Chorlton, Manchester, and Green, of Blackley, Manchester, continues.
