Manchester United midfielder Tom Cleverley has revealed he is gutted to have missed out on potentially getting his first cap for the senior England side. The 21-year-old, who turns 22 on Friday, was called up to the national squad to cover for the withdrawals of Jack Wilshere, Michael Carrick and Frank Lampard.
The continuing riots in London have forced the FA to cancel Wednesday’s friendly against Netherlands that was due to take place at Wembley, meaning Cleverley will have to wait to make his debut.
The player posted on his Facebook page: “Gutted the game has been called off, can't begin to describe my feelings at the moment!”
The midfielder trained with the squad on Tuesday morning but his involvement on this occasion will be limited to just that.
England boss Fabio Capello called him up to the squad after his impressive second-half performance in Sunday’s Community Shield triumph over Manchester City.
The England Under-21 star came off the bench at half-time and helped turn the game around, taking a 2-0 deficit to a 3-2 victory for United.
It was his first senior appearance for the Red Devils and he will be hoping he can stake a claim for a more regular role in the Premier League champions’ first team this campaign, after spending last season on loan at Wigan.
He will return to the Manchester club later today ahead of the title-holders' first game of the season away to West Brom at the weekend.
Cleverley must now target the next England game on September 2 when they face Bulgaria away in a must-win match in their Euro 2012 qualifying group.
After that it will face Wales at Wembley on September 6 and finally Montenegro away on October 7.
