Jones’ defiance in the face of the United onslaught last November convinced Sir Alex Ferguson that he had to buy him.
Fergie even sounded out Blackburn in January, but had to wait until the summer to realise his wish.
Fergie said: “I was convinced we had to get him after he played against us in the 7-1 game. When they lost the fifth goal, he was the one out there giving them all stick. That impressed me.”
