WAYNE ROONEY has backed David De Gea to come good and be a huge hit at Manchester United.
Spanish goalkeeper David De Gea has come in for a barrage of stick since joining Manchester United in an £18.3m deal from Atletico Madrid this summer.
The 20-year-old made blunders in his first two games against Manchester City in the Community Shield and at West Brom in their Premier League opener.
The Spain Under-21 star allowed Theo Walcott’s shot to go through his legs in Sunday’s 8-2 demolition of Arsenal.
But De Gea also saved a penalty and has shown flashes of brilliance to suggest he can go on to become a long-term replacement for Edwin van der Sar.
Wayne Rooney insists De Gea is up to the task and has the character to prove his critics wrong at Old Trafford. The England star is convinced De Gea will show his worth in time and has told people to be patient.
He said: “David is obviously a good shot-stopper.
“I hadn’t seen much of him before he signed, but that was something I saw immediately.
“Also his passing out from the back is alongside Edwin’s. He rarely kicks long to a forward.
“He is still young and has probably got a lot to learn, but he is working hard and doing well in training.
“He is a strong character. After the Manchester City game, and then West Brom, he didn’t seem to be affected.
“He was on the training pitch the next day, working hard.
“The last couple of games he’s done well for us and he will only get better the more he plays.”
