The Arsenal winger has praised his international team-mate after he scored two goals in the win over Bulgaria, and insists Frank Lampard still has plenty to offer the Three Lions
Arsenal winger Theo Walcott has hailed the influence of Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney for England, claiming that the Red Devils' striker brings more out of the rest of the team.
“He’s scoring goals and that’s what Wayne’s known for," Walcott said at a press conference ahead of Tuesday’s match against Wales at Wembley. "Just having him on the pitch you seem to get an extra percentage out of all the other players, especially when he’s playing well. He creates so much space for other players and the goals he’s scoring it’s great to see. Hopefully he can continue to score goals because he’s an absolute threat. He’s doing it for club and country now which is great to see.”
Rooney scored twice in his last outing for England, a 3-0 win over Bulagria on Friday, but it wasn't just Rooney who sparked off the English team. Fabio Capello's move to playing a more attractive attacking style has also draw praise from the young winger.
“The amount of pace we’ve got going forward, not just the players starting, the people on the bench as well, just shows [how much talent is in the squad]," he said. "You can see from the third goal [against Bulgaria] we’re a very attacking team. That’s what we want to be, we don’t want to be a defensive team."
The move to a 4-3-3, with Rooney as the point man and Ashley Young and Walcott flanking him, allowed England's pace to cause problems throughout the match and paid off in a big way.
“I tend to play that formation for Arsenal as well, so it’s sort of three up front and you can interchange throughout the whole front three," Walcott said. "So it can cause defenders all sorts of havoc if they don’t know who they’re playing against, so when they start getting used to you, you switch and someone else comes over and they’ve got an absolute headache. It seems to work very well and everyone’s gelled so it’s good news for England.”
