Man Utd boss Ferguson: Giggs was biggest threat for us

15.09.11

Manchester United bossSir Alex Ferguson paid tribute to Ryan Giggs after his record breaking goal at Benfica.

His strike means he has hit goals in the most Champions League seasons — an incredible 16.

It came 17 years to the day record-breaker Giggs, at 37 already the oldest goalscorer in the competition, struck his first goal in Europe.

Boss Fergie raved: "It was a great goal — terrific quality.

"I felt in the early part of the match he perhaps sat too deep in midfield, but when he got in behind them, in their central midfield area, he was a real threat to them.

"His goal was exactly that — he got his goal by getting in behind their midfield."

Giggs struck on 42 minutes after Oscar Cardozo had fired Benfica ahead.

Fergie added: "I thought both goals were terrific. The boy Cardozo took his goal fantastically well.

"I think once we scored we played well. I thought our possession in the first half was too cautious but once Ryan scored, I thought we played much better. In the second half, we had some opportunities."
