Aston Villa chief executive Paul Faulkner has confirmed that an improved offer fromLiverpool along with a transfer request by Stewart Downing has been accepted.
The 26-year old winger is set to join the Reds after undergoing a medical in what is a bizarre move by Villa who have already lost Ashley Young toManchester United this summer.
However, Villa chief Faulkner indicated that Liverpool had met Villa’s asking price, believed to be £20million, paving the way for the player, who handed in a transfer request, to depart Villa Park.
“We have reached an agreement with Liverpool following an improved offer and the submission of a formal transfer request by Stewart Downing,” he said.
“We have subsequently given them permission to speak with the player.”
Downing is set to become Liverpool’s second big-name signing, following formerBlackpool midfielder Charlie Adam to Anfield.
