An absorbing contest at the Stadium of Light went the way of hosts Sunderland who defeated leaders Manchester City 1-0 with a goal in added time.
Manchester City just couldn’t stop scoring at the beginning of the season, but now away to West Brom and Sunderland they have failed to hit the target.
At least against the Baggies they came away with a point but despite Edin Dzeko and Micah Richards both hitting the woodwork City were undone at the death against a rejuvenatedSunderland outfit under new boss Martin O’Neill.
There had never been a scoreless draw in this contest since 1938 but three minutes into injury time this record looked to be being broken until Stephane Sessegnon found Ji-Dong on the break who then coolly took the ball around Joe Hart to provoke scenes of jubilation on Wearside.
This was slightly cruel on City who had dominated the second half without taking their chances.
The result earns O'Neill his third win in five league matches since taking over at the Stadium of Light and lifts them six points above the relegation zone.
While for Roberto Mancini’s team, it means that they stay top ahead of Manchester United on goal difference.
