Man Utd striker Rooney to ignore Fergie and declare for Olympics

Sat, 10/22/2011

Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney is ready to defy manager Sir Alex Ferguson and declare himself for the Great Britain Olympics squad.

The Daily Mail says Rooney would see a call up to Stuart Pearce’s Team GB side as an honour and a privilege and would be thrilled to be part of the first British Olympic team since 1960.

But Ferguson said he thought playing Euro 2012 and the Olympics would be too much for players, saying: "They need their rest, need their pre-season training, need their recovery and recuperation from injuries, small injuries they have carried right through the season."

So the idea of his star striker being part of Pearce’s squad after probably featuring in Poland and Ukraine would not go well.

Rooney, 25, is eligible for selection as one of three ‘over-age’ players because he was born before January 1 1989.
