Man Utd fear Arsenal will drive Van Persie price to £30M

21-07-2012

Manchester United fear having to pay over the odds to land Arsenal striker Robin van Persie.

The Daily Mail says United fear it could take as much as £30million to prise Van Persie away from Arsenal.

Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed that he has made a bid for Van Persie, with United ready to battle rivals Manchester City and Juventus for the 29-year-old Holland striker.

But club sources believe United will have to raise their opening offer to close to the record £30.75m it took to sign Dimitar Berbatov from Tottenham four years ago, and there is also concern that Ferguson’s chequered history with Arsene Wenger could also be a major stumbling block in any deal.

Man Utd defender Ferdinand courts more Twitter controversy after Safari pics

21-07-2012

Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has again courted controversy on Twitter.

The Daily Mail reports Ferdinand posted a picture of himself holding a spear and shield alongside a Zulu warrior during United’s trip to PheZulu Safari Park on Thursday, and wrote: "Me + my Zulu friend out in the bush just before we hunted and killed a Lion + a Wilder beast!!"

Even though the park has no lions or wildebeest, some followers took him seriously. One wrote back: "Why did Rio Ferdinand have to kill a Lion while here in SA???? He could have spent the money on CONSERVATION!!!"

Ferdinand was forced to clarify his comments on Friday when he tweeted: "had an amazing time in Durban – safari was unbelievable and for those concerned I didn’t hunt any lions… can some of u please lighten up!"

Ex-Man Utd keeper Bailey impressed by De Gea, Lindegaard

21-07-2012

Former Manchester United goalkeeper Gary Bailey is impressed by the club's two current shot-stoppers.

Anders Lindegaard and David De Gea both have their fans in the battle to be United's No1.

Bailey told manutd.com: "Each one has his own qualities. David De Gea is a wonderful shot-stopper and he's also very composed and confident with the ball at his feet. He's done a lot in football when you consider he's only young. It's unusual for goalkeepers to blossom so early, but he's an exceptional talent.

"The only thing David needs to get used to is the physical nature of English football; it's very different to the Spanish game. Anders is a little older and I think sometimes you need that experience. He's great in the air and commands his penalty area. They're two fantastic goalkeepers and they keep each other on their toes. The manager has a tough choice to make when it comes to picking the right man to start."

Man Utd target Oliver Torres only thinking of Atletico Madrid stay

21-07-2012

Atletico Madrid whiz Oliver Torres has again declared his commitment to the club.

The teen is being linked with Manchester United.

Man Utd, Man City have bids in for Arsenal's Van Persie

21-07-2012

Manchester City and Manchester United have both made offers for Arsenal contract rebel Robin van Persie.

The Sun says City offered Arsenal around £15million yesterday and United boss Alex Ferguson also confirmed a bid, understood to be about £13m.

The Gunners want at least £20m for the striker.

The Londoners are resigned to losing last season’s Premier League top-scorer but told him yesterday in talks they will hold out for the full amount.

Man Utd boss Ferguson sees Carrick as their most important

21-07-2012

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson says Michael Carrick will make or break their season.

It is not Wayne Rooney, Nani or even Paul Scholes that Fergie sees as the man to guide United back to the top.

He explained: “I think Michael Carrick is the key to it. He did really well in the second half of last season and I think he’s going to be the key man.

“Scholes will obviously play his part, Ryan Giggs as well and Tom Cleverley hopefully as well as Anderson if he keeps fit.

“They will all play a part — but, for me, Carrick is the key player.

“If you look at the central midfielders in the Premier League, he can match up against any of them in terms of quality.”

Man Utd boss Ferguson admits not taking Champions League seriously

21-07-2012

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson says he won't take the Champions League as lightly as he did last season.

Ferguson believes he simply took the competition too lightly last season given that United usually sail through the group stages. But last term they won only two games of their six and went out after an away defeat to Swiss side Basel.

Ferguson said: “That definitely won’t happen next season, there is no chance of that.

“Over the last few years we have used the group stages in Europe as an opportunity to play some of the youngsters.

“We have done it two or three times — but last season it backfired for us.

“We changed the team too much and we won’t be doing that this season.”

Man Utd keeper Lindegaard still regrets timing of last season's injury

07/21/2012

Manchester United goalkeeper Anders Lindegaard admits last season's injury couldn't have at the worst time.

Lindegaard, 28, lost his place in the United goal when he picked up an ankle knock in January.

He had starred in his last six games for the club but could only watch on as David De Gea snatched back the No1 jersey.

He told The Sun: “If you look at it objectively, it was maybe one of the worst situations a football player has ever been in.

“I had worked for that spot since I was four.

“From the first time I touched the ball, that is what I dreamed of.

“It has been a very frustrating period, from the day I got injured until after the Euros.

“But I have to try and use it in a positive way. The disappointment was so big, if I let it drag me down, I will never get out of that hole again.”

Chinese bank-busting offer prepared for Man Utd ace Rooney

Sunday, June 24, 2012

Manchester United face a battle to keep Wayne Rooney away from a bank-busting move to China.
Backed by billions from businessmen seeking political influence through football, the success-hungry Chinese are prepared to splash out fortunes on young superstars rather than ageing ones.
That’s why Rooney, other up-and-coming Premier League stars – and even Barcelona star Lionel Messi – are now being targeted as potential big money recruits who can expect to be paid even more than the £220,000 a week Chelsea legend Didier Drogba is reported to be banking from his new club, Shanghai Shenhua.
“They are not prepared to accept Europe’s cast-offs any more. They want the likes of Rooney, Sergio Aguero and Bastien Schweinsteiger,” Professor Simon Chadwick, head of the business strategy faculty at Coventry University, told the Sunday Express.
“Players like them would be much more significant – and then the floodgates really will open.”

Kelly was the shock last-minute call-up to Roy Hodgson’s squad after Chelsea centre-back Gary Cahill broke his jaw against Belgium.

But questions were raised over why the experienced Manchester United central defender Ferdinand was not selected instead.

Ferdinand, 33, is veteran of more than 80 caps for his country.

But he has told Kop youngster Kelly that there are no hard feelings on his part and urged him to enjoy the experience, says The Sun.

Ferdinand also kindly invited 22-year-old Kelly to ring him any time he wants to for advice.

Andy Gray: England have luck and rampaging Stevie G on their side

06/22/2012

Sharethematch.com ambassador Andy Gray was talking exclusively to tribalfootball.com…

IT MIGHT not have been pretty but I doubt England fans will care, and lets be honest now, it was about time Lady Luck smiled on the Three Lions.

England have enjoyed enough bad luck in the past with Sol Campbell’s disallowed header against Argentina, David Beckham’s sending off in the World Cup and Frank Lampard’s goal that never was at the last big tournament against Germany.

So you know England have had their fair share of bad luck at major tournament and I’m neither here nor there about whether it should have been given or it shouldn’t have.

Michel Platini’s attitude is that these officials don’t make mistakes because there’s so many of them but it just proves once and for all that it’s not as straight forward as that.

Even with a human eye so close you still can’t get it right so it’s no surprise to me that Sepp Blatter has come out and said that it’s not if but when goal line technology comes in.

And it should just be goal line technology and nothing else. I’m not an advocate of too much technology but certainly goal line technology, certainly for big tournaments.

But what’s done is done and England might only be at best a fairly average national side but they have a very good team spirit, they work hard for each other and defend very well and are hard to beat.

Steven Gerrard got most of the plaudits after the Ukraine game and quite rightly too.

I think Steven’s had a fantastic tournament. England are not playing that well and need inspiration and I think the skipper has provided that.

He looks fit and looks like his old self rampaging around the pitch and he can make anything happen which is a rare commodity in the England team right now.

Wayne Rooney was grabbing the headlines before the game and I think the one thing we can take out of it is that he needed the game for his fitness.

That is the reason I would have played him in the friendly games. I think Roy Hodgson has done everything right since he has taken over as coach but that’s the one thing I would have questioned.

I think Wayne was desperate for a game and I would have given him the whole game against Norway to keep himself match fit because it’s now four or five weeks since Wayne played a competitive game.

And I think that showed against Ukraine, but he’ll be better for the game. It wasn’t his best but he scored a very important goal and you can’t take that away from him and he’ll be fitter and better because of that.

Up next for England now is Italy in the quarter-final and I have seen quite a bit of Italy and actually thought against Spain at the very beginning they played very, very well.

They got a 1-1 but might have won it. They played three at the back as they did against Croatia but they changed it to four at the back against Ireland, which I thought they would do because of the nature of the team and the fact they needed to win it.

However, I’m not so sure they will do that against England and they might revert to three at the back with the five in midfield and two up front.

If Italy play as well as they did against Spain then they can run England very close. But I’ve seen Italy play less than great against the Irish where they were OK but I wasn’t that impressed.

I think like England there won’t be many chances as like England they know how to defend so I can see this being a really, really tight game and this might actually be the first game of the competition to go to penalties. I think there is a real chance this could go either way.

I can see Germany beating Greece fairly comfortable, I can see Portugal getting past a dangerous Czech Republic side if they play like they did against Holland, and I think Spain will come out on top of an exciting tie with France.

But as for England versus Italy, I think it is too close to call and I really think it is flip of a coin stuff, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see penalties.

If so, let’s hope England’s luck continues to turn.

Man Utd ace Nani full of pride over Portugal triumph

06/22/2012

Manchester United ace Nani was proud to be part of Portugal's Euro2012 quarterfinal victory over the Czech Republic.

Nani saw Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo net the winner.

"I had a couple of chances, Cristiano did, and Almeida as well," said Nani.

"Finally Ronaldo scored a goal, we won the game and that's the most important thing. Everyone is happy, we're very satisfied with the result. Every game [as we progress] is going to be more difficult but it was a great performance by all the players tonight and the whole team is feeling very confident. Now we have to rest and prepare for the big match."

Ronaldo added: "I hit the post twice in the last game as well.

"But then I did score and we won. We're very happy, the team played very well and we are in the semi-finals. We're ready for the fight."

Man Utd legend Neville knows England must be wary of Man City's Balotelli

06/22/2012

Manchester United legend Gary Neville knows England must be wary of Manchester City strikerMario Balotelli against Italy on Sunday.

Neville claimed the maverick striker would be desperate to get one over on England.

"Joleon will know him better than we do, that's the great thing," he said.

"There will be no surprise for Joleon on Sunday and the same for John Terry who'll have played against him as well, so that's a good thing.

"But obviously knowing and playing against him means that there will be that added extra spice that Balotelli himself will want to put one over on England.

"He plays in the country, he's a big figure in England with respect to the media he gets and he's a champion of England now with Manchester City and he will be very difficult to play against."

Newcastle boss Alan Pardew was particularly keen, having identified the athletic left-back as someone who could fill that position in his progressive team.

"Our fans were brilliant all day, even when Man City scored their first goal. We obviously knew on the pitch they had gone 1-0 up and we were also aware when QPR went 2-1 up.

"When the final whistle went, we didn’t really know what the score was. But then we heard theSunderland fans cheering. It was sad to see that because they should be supporting their own team really. They didn’t have the best of seasons themselves so for them to be cheering like that was sad. It was something that myself and a lot of the players won’t forget.”

"It also looks like he dodged a bullet in not going to Aston Villa. You have to be careful about who you get into bed with.

"But if he gets it and it doesn’t work out, will we hear the same old excuses about how the job was too big for him blah, blah, blah — or will people realise that maybe it’s the players rather than the manager to blame?"

"De Gea has to ignore that and just play his own game.

"Eric Steele, the goalkeeping coach, and the manager will both help him and hopefully next season he will be ready from the start."

He added: "He did get criticism last season but I made mistakes at Ajax when I was young, and also at Juventus and United.

"The main thing is how you recover in the next game, or the game itself. He did that. He became more important as the season went on and made good saves.

"I have not seen him in his shorts, so physically, it is difficult to say how big he actually is. But I am sure United knew all that when they signed him, so would have been aware of what to expect."

Man Utd veteran Giggs: Neville will be England success

Wed, 05/16/2012

Manchester United veteran Ryan Giggs is happy for former teammate Gary Neville over his appointment to the England coaching staff.

The 37-year-old's tactical acumen and passion was widely praised during his spell on television, but he has no experience of coaching at club, yet alone international level.

"I'm sure he'll be a success with England," Giggs said. "He's obviously done well on the TV with his views and his outlook on football and he's got fresh ideas.

"He's played at the top himself, he's got so many positives and so many things he can bring to the table. I think management will be the next step for him. He knows what the modern day footballer wants and needs, which is important.

"No matter what he would have done he would have been a success because he's that sort of person. He's a force of nature. He's driven, very ambitious and he's very good at what he does.

"I did my coaching badges with him and he was very alert. He's very switched on and intelligent. And together with that he's been there and done it."

Giggs can't see Man Utd pal Scholes ending England exile

Wed, 05/16/2012

"I wouldn't hold your breath (about Scholes going to Euro 2012) but if he does decide to play andRoy Hodgson does decide to try and bring him out of retirement he'd be a great addition to the squad," said Giggs, who was speaking at the Premier League 20 Seasons Awards in London.

"In any team in any tournament he would shine.

"He and Xavi are the same sort of players. They just control the tempo of great teams. To do that you need to be a special player and that's what he does."

"Obviously I'm really proud - if you just see the players who have been nominated to come out to is something to be proud of," he said.

"Its tough to just lose out in the manner that we did but City won the league and congratulations to them, whoever wins the league deserves it. We just have to go away now and come back tougher to compete next year."

Levein says Fletcher upbeat over Man Utd comeback

Wed, 05/16/2012

Scotland coach Craig Levein says Manchester United midfielder Darren Fletcher remains positive about a full recovery from his bowel complaint.

Fletcher’s career for both club and country is still up in the air. The Manchester United midfielder hoped to travel to America — even to watch — but will stay at home to continue his recovery from ulcerative colitis.

Levein added: “I spoke to him a couple of days ago. He hoped he would be well enough to travel but he was a little bit uncertain about it. So I said that if he was unsure, the best thing for him was to stay.

“The reason behind it was that I see him as a really important part of the group.

“He has a great influence on other people and it’s always great if he’s there.

“But what I didn’t want to do was to take him out of his rehabilitation and across the other side of the world, whatever the complications might have been with that.

“But I desperately want him back. You can never say anything in football with a degree of certainty but I believe if he had been fit for Manchester United this year, he might have made the difference between them not winning and winning the title.

“That’s how highly I regard him.

“I don’t get involved in any of the details of his rehab but he’s always a very positive boy. It’s my intention to have him back to try and qualify for Brazil. I don’t really like speaking about his illness, that’s not for me to talk about.

“It’s not my position to speak publicly about it. I don’t feel comfortable about that, because I don’t know with any degree of certainty exactly what the situation is.

“I can tell you that I’d love to have him in the group, even if he’s not fit to play. I want him back and the lads do as well.”

"In training and in games you find yourself laughing because he makes it look so easy.

"He's easily the best player I've played because he makes it looks so easy."

“It was funny. Embarrassing, but funny,” noted Beckham with a grin as he spoke to members of the media in the White House’s China Room after the presidential audience. “[Obama] made a few comments, actually, about me today: the underwear, being a dad to some of the kids, and also my facial hair. He’s very charismatic, he’s a huge character and it’s a huge honor for us to meet him today.”

"Messi scored 50 goals that weren't worth anything, in the same way that Cristiano scored 42 last season that didn't stand for anything.

"He hasn't been able to win the Pichichi and I believe he should be compensated with the Ballon d'Or."

Man Utd hero Sheringham backing QPR striker Zamora for England squad

Wed, 05/16/2012

Former Manchester United striker Teddy Sheringham says England should select QPR striker Bobby Zamora for the Euros.

Sheringham believes Zamora’s playing style offers much to England going into the tournament and is confident his ex-West Ham team-mate can help lead England’s attack.

"When you play in a major competition it’s like playing away from home," said Sheringham.

"It’s the same for most sides of course, but that is the feel you get of the game – you are not playing a home game.

"So if you’re picking strikers you’ve got to have people who can hold the ball up in the opposition half and for me the best player that can do that is Bobby Zamora.

"I know he has not had the best end of the seasons but he does an Emile Heskey-type job for England - and he can score goals as well.

"He is good in the air and he is very capable playing in an England team and would be good alongsideWayne Rooney in the latter stages. Roy Hodgson would know how to get the best out of him too."

Man Utd appreciate swift apology from Man City over Tevez actions

15 May 2012

City reacted quickly on Monday night to express "sincerest apologies" while Tevez also spoke of his regret.

United chief executive David Gill told Sky Sports News: "I think it's right. The club acted pretty quickly.

"I think it was rather silly, frankly, in terms of what it said, but City acted with commendable speed.

"We move on and concentrate on other issues."

The Football Association are looking into the matter after chairman David Bernstein was asked about the incident by MPs on the Culture, Media and Sport Select Committee.

Bernstein said: "It looked to me rather silly, more than anything else - an impetuous, silly thing to do. It certainly wasn't very sensible.

"I think it was a very excitable moment, emotions were running very high.

"As I understand it, and I stand to be corrected, I think someone passed this thing to Tevez who just sort of put it in the air, so I don't think it's the most serious thing I've ever come across.

"But I don't know all the facts and I would leave it to the people (at the FA) who will look at it professionally."

Man Utd striker Rooney: Everton draw wrecked our title chance

15 May 2012

Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney knows the Everton draw wrecked their title chances.

Rooney has no doubt where it all went wrong for the Red Devils as they tossed away an eight-point lead with just six games remaining.

"The biggest disappointment was the Everton game," he said. "To be 4-2 up, with 10 minutes to go and to lose that lead is disappointing. But there are a lot of young players in the team. That is only going to benefit them. They will learn from that."

That view was shared by central defender Rio Ferdinand.

"(Sunday) was a crazy day of emotions," he said. "I thought we had almost bagged it but then the impossible happened.

"We have to dust ourselves down and make sure we are in the right frame of mind. We have experienced players in the squad. We all have to learn and be stronger. You have to be together during the good times and the bad."

Evra backs Man Utd to fight back hard if they lose title

07 May 2012

Patrice Evra is supremely confident that Manchester United will bounce back if they happen to lose this season’s Premier League title.
The Premiership is in the hands of crosstown rivals Manchester City who need to beat QPR at home on Sunday whilst United travel to Sunderland in the hope that the Eastlands outfit slip up.
Evra says that some people think the ‘empire’ will begin to crumble if they cannot beat City to the title but he feels the club can return to the champions list immediately.
"I know that if we don't win the league then a lot of people will say this is the end of the empire and ask how we will survive,” he said.
"But there is a lot of talent at this club. We've had to deal with a lot through injuries and losing experienced players last summer and it's never easy to find a solution immediately."

LA Galaxy’s Beckham frustrated after failing to impress GB Olympic coach Pearce

07 May 2012

David Beckham missed a great opportunity to impress Team GB coach Stuart Pearce as theLA Galaxy lost 1-0 at home to New York Red Bulls on the weekend.
The veteran midfielder is hoping to be selected as one of three players over the age of 23 for Pearce’s Olympics squad but did little to affect the outcome of the match at The Home Depot Center.
Pearce was on hand to watch Beckham and the reigning MLS champions slump to a fifth defeat of the campaign which sees them languishing in seventh place on the nine-team Western Conference table.
The former Manchester United and Real Madrid star admits it has been a frustrating beginning to the 2012 season, lamenting a number of missed opportunities throughout the 90 minutes.
“It's getting even more frustrating week after week,” said Beckham.
“We had our chances and we didn't finish off the chances that we had.
“We got sloppy in defence with a couple plays and obviously it's disappointing to lose at home.”

Andy Gray: Why England players are delighted with Hodgson choice

07 May 2012

I DON’T understand why but the English national press seem to be against the appointment ofRoy Hodgson as England manager – but what’s for certain is they are.
Roy may not have the support from most of Britain’s media but I do know he will have the player’s 100 per cent backing and is a very popular choice.
We have seen some papers come out with ludicrous headlines and some in the press still banging the Harry Redknapp drum fairly loudly.
But what is done is done and I for one think Hodgson is a great appointment and all of this negativity will pale into insignificance when he gets his squad together.
I was not surprised, like a lot of other people that Roy got offered the job and I think it is a fantastic move – I really do.
The press seemed to be picking the manager themselves, they almost set up an agenda to try and get Harry in.
Certainly the London press were, and also the national press were after Harry, they made that very clear and they weren’t prepared to accept someone else.
But I just don’t think it was as simple as that what with Tottenham’s demands in the mix and it’s been proven.
And I always thought Hodgson would be in with a chance because he’d been interviewed before for the job, so they obviously had him in mind and for a national coach he comes with just about the perfect CV.
It is not the easiest job to walk straight into and he has some tough decisions to make and things to sort out straight off the bat which is never easy.
He was obviously asked about them in his press conference and he was pretty cagey about it but the whole Rio Ferdinand and John Terry saga needs sorting.
The first thing he will want to do is get a squad together and have a chat with them.
Other than that he’ll do things like talk to Rio in particular I think, so when he meets the press he’s told them he’s more than happy to play for England and whoever he’s playing alongside.
The other big one is that he’ll have to decide who his captain’s going to be moving on and into the Euros.
And then another big decision he’s got to make is who’s going to be sat alongside him for England games as his assistant, who’s going to be on the training ground with him working with the players and what, will the chemistry of his backroom staff be.
So he’ll concentrate on what he’s doing for West Brom in their final two games and once we get the season over with, he’ll be looking forward to gathering his players for the first time and sorting out his squad.
But the one thing I am sure about is that every one of those he picks will respect him, no matter of their standing in the game.
I think that if any of the England players don’t respect or listen to him then they’d be doing themselves and their country a disservice.
I don’t think there’s an England player in the squad who will not sit and talk, and listen.
This is a different thing from club management and you’re not with the trainers the whole time, you don’t buy and sell, you pick the best team, the best squad of players for you, and they will want to work with him, I’m sure they will.
Now we have to wait and see if he can deliver and Roy knows that’s exactly what he’ll be judged on.
He’ll be judged on his personality, he’ll be judged on can he produce the results for England in a major tournament, and he knows that.
As for Harry, I know he came out and said that he has missed his chance and that he will never manage England now and I fear that he has a point.
Harry’s 65 now and Roy could be in the job for at least four years and that’s going to take Harry very near his 70s and he might well be looking to retire around about.
But never, say never in football. If it goes disastrously for Roy in the first couple of years then there might be a vacancy around and Harry might be reconsidered for it. But I can understand what he’s saying, he feels that the age he’s at, the four year contract already been given to Roy – perhaps next time around England wouldn’t be looking for a senior guy and that they would be looking to groom one of their own.
But we will have to wait and see what happens but Harry knows the score and he, like everyone else, will be wishing Roy the best of luck I am sure.

QPR boss Hughes: This team capable of stunning Man City

07 May 2012

QPR boss Mark Hughes believes his team are capable of shocking Manchester City this weekend.
The Rs need a result to guarantee staying up - while City must win to be sure of keeping the title away from Manchester United's clutches.
"We haven't covered ourselves in glory this year on the road, but what better time to turn it around?" Hughes said.
"There will be a huge amount of expectation on the game with them going for the title, but we'll give it our best shot.
"It's unbelievable what this league throws up time and again, but it's in our hands and that's all we can ask for.
"Obviously results elsewhere could help us out, but we want to go and make it happen ourselves.
"My focus is totally on what we do - I get the feeling we'll be a lot better than we were atChelsea last week."

Evra insists no Man Utd clearout required

07 May 2012

Manchester United captain Patrice Evra insists there's no reason for panic if they fail to win the title.
Evra is not convinced a major overhaul is required.
"I know that if we don't win the league then a lot of people will say this is the end of the empire and ask how we will survive," said the France full-back.
"But there is a lot of talent at this club.
"We've had to deal with a lot through injuries and losing experienced players last summer and it's never easy to find a solution immediately."

Liverpool legend Hansen: Title will make Man City's Mancini into managerial great

07 May 2012

Liverpool legend Alan Hansen says Roberto Mancini should be regarded among the managerial greats if Manchester City win the title next week.
Hansen wrote in the Telegraph: "It is a remarkable fact only six managers have won the title in the last 20 years; the Italian can now sit proudly alongside Sir Alex FergusonArsene Wenger,Jose MourinhoCarlo Ancelotti and Kenny Dalglish. Anyone who oversees such an achievement deserves to be in such esteemed company.
"Should Manchester City defeat QPR next weekend, as everyone anticipates, Mancini will also have succeeded in a unique way. If a guide is ever written for the most unconventional means of winning a championship, the Manchester City manager will be the author.
"He’s led his club to the brink of an historic triumph by going about it in the hardest possible way. I thought City would win the league by 20 points at one stage, but all that matters in the end is that you win, no matter what the distance. "

Mackie adamant QPR capable of wrecking Man City title dream

07 May 2012

QPR striker Jamie Mackie insists they're capable of upsetting Manchester City next week.
The Rs need a result to be sure of staying up - and can gift Manchester United the title in the process.
“Manchester City haven’t been in this position for a long, long time and many of their players haven’t won the Premier League title before,” Mackie told talkSPORT.
“Pressure can do strange things to people. Fans are expecting a massive day forManchester City but we’re scrapping for our lives and a point would mean the world to us.
“We haven’t got great away form but that’s got to change at some stage. We feel we can go there and try to spoil the party.
“We’ve got real experience all around the pitch. People will write us off but we’re massively focused on trying to get something there. We’re fighting for our lives.”

Ferguson felt his side were poor on the night and conceded the title was now City's to throw away.

"It was feisty, competitive, not a lot of goal chances," the Scot said. "We're disappointed we never tested their goalkeeper.

"They had more threat as they had more action around the edge of our box."

Ferguson lamented the manner of City's goal, which came from a corner right on the stroke of half-time.

"If you lose a goal from a set-piece at this level, you only have yourself to blame for that," he said. "It was a bad time to lose a goal."

He added: "I think they're in the driver's seat now. They've got to win two games of football.

"It's not over yet, but they've got an eight-goal advantage. It's a big advantage."

And although the destiny of the silverware is now in City's hands, Roberto Mancini's men face a tricky test next Sunday when they travel to Newcastle to take on one of the league's form sides. Nothing, Gary Neville insists, is certain yet.

"All the pressure's now on City," he said. "They play first up at Newcastle so United will know exactly what they need to do [by the time they kick off against Swansea at Old Trafford], or even if they've got a chance."

Wright told The Sun: "Vincent Kompany is City’s strongest, most dangerous player in the air and his goal was obviously crucial. He was too good for Chris Smalling.

“With a draw, they knew the championship was finished. It was an important result. Now we have it in our hands.

“But I’m not happy just for me, I’m happy for our fans.

“It is important we are top now but it is more important to be top on May 13.”

However, if the damage is bad, it could have serious consequences for Roy Hodgson, who seemed likely to select Welbeck in his European Championship squad if, as expected, he is confirmed as Fabio Capello's replacement later.

"You can look back at all sorts of games but you've got to look at the Everton one," he said.

"That was a ridiculous performance for the last seven minutes to lose two goals. That's maybe cost us the league.

"We know we need to win two games of football, that's another way of looking at it. Of course, we're certainly not in the driving seat any more."

PREMIER LEAGUE: Everton storm back to draw 4-4 at Man Utd

22-04-2012

Manchester United have left the door open again to chasing Manchester City after being pegged back 4-4 by Everton today.
In an amazing encounter, United surrendered a 4-2 lead to draw 4-4 with the Toffees.
Nikica Jelavic had given the visitors a deserved lead with his sixth goal in six games for the visitors.
But Wayne Rooney responded by nodding home Nani's superb cross five minutes before the break, his 32nd goal of the season.
After halftime, United found a moment of inspiration after Nani had shown admirable desire to outjump Phil Neville on the edge of the area.
Danny Welbeck collected the loose ball, took advantage of Johnny Heitinga's rash challenge to step inside the Dutchman, then curled a superb shot into the top corner.
The stadium erupted, and when Welbeck fed Nani a couple of minutes later and he coolly chipped the advancing Howard, the victory looked secure.
However, when Tony Hibbert crossed once more, Marouane Fellaini met it with a first-time volley that flew past David De Gea.
Rooney then responded with his second of the day, turning in a Nani cross to make it 4-2.
But the visitors kept coming as Jelavic nicked in to make it 4-3 before Steven Pienaar converted Fellaini's lay off on 85 minutes to make it 4-4.
