Sunderland hope to close a deal for Manchester Unitedtrio Wes Brown, John O'Shea and Darron Gibson this week.
The Journal says a deal to land the three Manchester United players has taken far longer to complete. Nevertheless, boss Steve Bruce is hopeful of making progress before his players report back for pre-season training on Wednesday.
The extremely versatile O’Shea is represented by the same agency as Craig Gardner, so the Irishman’s future is bound to have been mentioned this week, despite rumoured late interest from Arsenal.
Republic of Ireland midfielder Gibson was quick to voice his enthusiasm for a move, while reported interest from the North West in Brown does not appear to have materialised.
Sunderland’s combined £12m bid was received at Old Trafford as soon as it became clear Jordan Henderson was bound for Liverpool at the start of the month.
