Arsenal legend Wright canes Man Utd winger Young over soft pen

Tue, 04/17/2012

Arsenal legend Ian Wright has taken aim at Manchester United winger Ashley Young over the way he won his penalty in victory against Aston Villa.

Wright wrote in The Sun: "When Manchester United winger Ashley Young went down for the second week in a row to win that penalty against Aston Villa, my first thought was, ‘You’re looking for his leg there, mate.’

"People say it was a spot-kick but I’m not so convinced. If you’re going down, you’re going down, simple as that.

"You don’t go to ground with your legs flailing like that, trying to accentuate it to that ridiculous extent.

"If it was a foreigner doing it I’d be slaughtering them, so it shouldn’t be any different when it’s a home-grown player. It’s cheating, nothing else.

"I was lucky that our Arsenal dressing room didn’t really have a problem like that.

"But if ever anyone did try and con a decision, or was rolling around, I’d be thinking, ‘Why are you doing that, you’re wasting time, just get on with the game’.

"We have got to take steps to wipe this out of football or — the way it’s going — there are going to be raging arguments every week."

Tue, 04/17/2012

Manchester United are reviving their interest in Inter Milan star Wesley Sneijder.

The Daily Star says they will battle it out with Russian giants Anzhi Makhachkala for Sneijder.

The Dutch international looks set to leave Inter Milan in the summer with Anzhi hot on his heels.

The Russian side are the only club able to fund the transfer, with Inter demanding at least £40m.

Sneijder however would be keen on a move to the Premier League, with Manchester United set to make a fresh attempt to sign the midfielder.

United boss Sir Alex Ferguson tried to sign the Dutch star last year but failed to strike a deal with the Italian giants. Ferguson has kept close tabs on Sneijder and is keen to make another move for the midfield ace.

An Italian source said: “Inter will sell Sneijder but it will have to be on their terms. They believe he is worth £40m in the current market.

“He is one of the leading players in the world in his position, so he won’t be allowed to leave on the cheap. Now we wait and see what happens in the near future.”

Why Chelsea must beat Man Utd for Sneijder to get best from Torres

Tue, 04/17/2012

If he wants to get the most from his £50 million investment in Fernando Torres, then Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich needs to rip up his summer transfer plans and start again.

Hulk (Porto) and Radamel Falcao (Atletico Madrid) for centre-forward you can understand and there is a need to try again for Porto fullback Alvaro Pereira. But in midfield, where Abramovich has sent out feelers for Lille winger Eden Hazard and Juventus' forgotten wide man Milos Krasic, the approach needs a rethink.

You have to fancy there was more behind Sir Alex Ferguson's unprovoked attack on Rafa Benitez this week than simply the chance to needle the former Liverpool manager.

"Two or three years ago Liverpool beat us 4-1 at Old Trafford and that genius Benitez said they had planned to beat us by playing long balls in behind," barked the Manchester United manager.

"Remember that? Clown."

Abramovich, if he wants to do right by Torres, should be studying Ferguson's words closely. Because Benitez was right. At Liverpool, under Benitez, Torres regularly gave United skipper Nemanja Vidic a torrid time. With the quality of passing from Steven Gerrard and Xabi Alonso deep in midfield, Torres would consistently isolate Vidic and using his pace and six foot frame get the better of the big Serb. Goals and red cards haunted Ferguson and Vidic while Benitez had Xabi, Gerrard and Torres playing together.

Knowing Abramovich is planning another big spend this summer, could Ferguson have been attempting to steer the Russian away from the solution to his Torres dilemma?

Fast-forward to today and there's no-one on the books at Chelsea with the ability to ping a 30-yard ball over the shoulder of Torres. Juan Mata, whose bubbly personality has helped to bring him out of his shell this season, still isn't the type of midfielder to make the most of his countryman's strengths. And lining up Hazard or Krasic, as exciting additions they would be, still leaves the Blues short of a genuine, passing midfielder.

Andrea Pirlo, who ummed and aahed over joining Chelsea two summers ago, would have been ideal. Having swapped AC Milan for Juventus this season, Pirlo, still only 32, has used his range of passing - from deep - to inspire his new club to the Serie A summit.

That was a big miss for Chelsea, particularly given the scarcity of quality passing midfielders currently running around Europe.

It's no coincidence that Torres' form has improved under Roberto di Matteo. The Italian, schooled at MK Dons and West Bromwich Albion, employs a more direct brand of football than predecessor Andre Villas-Boas, giving Torres greater scope to run off the shoulder of his marker.

The intricate short passing of AVB just didn't work for the Spaniard. There was no open space to consistently run into as he waited for passing sequences to evolve. Under Di Matteo, with the tempo hastened, Torres is now finding himself free more often. It's no surprise his assists have also gone up, since the manager change, as Chelsea have used his pace to create openings.

Wesley Sneijder just seems the natural fit for Torres and Chelsea. The Dutchman is one player with the ability to receive the ball deep in his own half, get his head up and spray a 30-metre pass behind a defence.

This season has been a nightmare for Sneijder at Inter. After his on-off move to Manchester Unitedfell through last August, he's found himself on the bench or in the stands as Gian Piero Gasperini andClaudio Ranieri both found ways of leaving him out of their plans.

After a frustrating 12 months, a move to London would appeal, where Abramovich can offer Sneijder a pivotal, guaranteed role bossing Chelsea's midfield, being the prime link between the back four and Torres.

It broke this morning in Italy that Inter are inviting offers for the Dutch ace, with Anzhi and United already in contact. Ferguson never invites controversy for the sake of it. Abramovich should be looking deeper into his wind-up of Benitez and thinking hard about challenging the Scot for Sneidjer this summer.

Why Man Utd and Liverpool have joined the battle for Luis Muriel - the new Ronaldo

Tue, 04/17/2012

In Italy, they say Luis Muriel is the best they've seen since Ronaldo. Even Azzurri coach Cesare Prandelli has asked to be introduced to him.

Brought to Italy by Udinese and in his first full season in Europe, Muriel has been a revelation for Serie A strugglers Lecce, drawing comparisons to Real Madrid and Inter Milan legend Ronaldo and attracting the interest of Europe's biggest clubs, including the Nerazzurri, Manchester United andLiverpool.

Before his sacking, Liverpool football chief Damien Comolli registered their interest with Udinese when enquiring about senior players Pablo Armero and Mehdi Benatia. United manager Sir Alex Ferguson, meanwhile, had been tipped off about the Colombian by his Italian scout David Williams and had brother Martin make a personal check last month.

The emergence of Muriel is another triumph of Udinese's South American scouting network. After the success of Alexis Sanchez, who was sold to Barcelona for €26 million, Udinese shareholder Jean Paolo Pozzo made it clear on Colombian radio last week how much they rated Muriel: "He's worth one and a half more than Alexis Sanchez."

The 20 year-old was snapped up for just €1.5 million from Deportivo Cali, where he made his debut as an 18 year-old, but had to wait almost a year for his second game. His senior career in Colombia was just ten matches-old, before Udinese swooped.

It's at Lecce, under the guidance of coach Serse Cosmi this season, where Muriel has exploded. There are some who believe it's too soon to judge the Colombian's value after less than 12 months of consistent goal scoring form.

But Cosmi has no doubts: "He's a pure talent, who needs to be improved because sometimes things can stall for a player of his age. But he has great qualities. And he is very similar to Ronaldo."

Muriel feels the pressure of a relegation battle has accelerated his development.

"Being in this situation, fighting relegation every Sunday, forces you to get serious," said Muriel. "There's no chance of relaxing, it's always tense. Playing with this pressure is difficult, but I also hope beneficial for my career.

"It's worked well for me here. I have the confidence of the coach and his staff and this has helped me on the field. I think I'm playing the best football of my career."

And on Cosmi's Ronaldo comments, Muriel smiles: "When I first heard that, it gave me great joy to be compared to Ronaldo, it made me proud.

"But I took it calmly because I know I have not yet achieved anything and there's a long way to go to get close to Ronaldo's level."

AC Milan coach Massimiliano Allegri is also a fan and has driven club chiefs to make contact withUdinese about a €10 million end of season deal.

"He's powerful, fast and plays like a veteran," gushed Allegri earlier this season. "He's certainly someone we must watch."

Muriel's star is on the rise and only last week, during a visit to the Lecce training ground, Italy coach Cesare Prandelli asked to be introduced to the youngster.

"I've come to see for myself," smiled Prandelli. "We can read the words of Cosmi and they carry weight. You can make a judgement from his comments.

"Potentially, this young man is an extraordinary player."

Though they stand to make a stunning profit from any summer sale, Udinese's owners, the Pozzo family, are agonising over whether to hold onto their young star for at least one season. Interest in Udine is reaching unprecedented proportions and potential season ticket records have the Pozzos seriously considering locking down Muriel for at least 12 months - no matter what type of offers the likes of United and Liverpool are prepared to make.

"It is a joy so many big clubs are watching me because it gives me motivation to keep doing the right thing," says Muriel. "I know it's not just rumours.

"But now I'm focused on saving Lecce from relegation. After that, we'll see ..."

Ex-Man Utd defender Blanc keeps door ajar for Chelsea job

Tue, 04/17/2012

France national team coach Laurent Blanc has indicated that he could be open to returning to club coaching at some stage.

The former Manchester United, Barcelona, Marseille and Inter Milan defender is being linked with theChelsea job currently held by Roberto Di Matteo. Despite suggesting he is solely focused on this summer’s European Championships with Les Bleus, ex-Bordeaux boss Blanc has left the door ajar for a possible move to England.

"My intention is to continue with the France team. I have not changed my mind," Blanc stated in an interview with Le Parisien.

"But the situation is that my contract has not yet been extended. And I'm not the kind of guy who will keep tapping at the door. If it's clear, it's clear.

"It is always gratifying to be appreciated by big clubs. My goal is the Euro. I am completely focused on this competition.

"If an exceptional challenge is proposed to me, I can very well decide to leave the French team. But that is not the case at the moment."
