Man Utd ace Young: Beating Man City in Community Shield a career highly (no, really!)

Sat, 10/22/2011

Manchester United winger Ashley Young admits victory over Manchester City in the ho-hum Community Shield is one of the big moments of his career so far.

Young's first big game as an Old Trafford player following a £16million move from Aston Villa and taught him everything about his new club's will to win.

He told The Sun: "I know what people say about the Community Shield just being a glamorous friendly but there was a lot on that game.

"The boys had lost to City in the FA Cup semi-final at Wembley a few months earlier and didn't want it to happen again, so the match had added spice.

"In the dressing room at half-time, we were sat there losing 2-0 and we were all so determined we would not be beaten.

"We had played quite well in the first half, despite the score, and everyone was saying how we would create chances and get ourselves back into it.

"We said, 'If we get one, we'll get more' and that's what happened. We got one and it just carried on.

"It was a special moment for me. I was delighted to get a first bit of silverware so quickly. I felt like this is what it was all about and why I'd joined United.

"I'd signed to win trophies and I'd already got my first one. Before that the only medal I'd won was for getting promotion to the Premier League with Watford.

"When you join United you have that belief, it gets drummed into you straight away.

"You get that winning mentality — players even get upset when they lose in training. It's how everybody is throughout the club."

Man Utd striker Rooney to ignore Fergie and declare for Olympics

Sat, 10/22/2011

Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney is ready to defy manager Sir Alex Ferguson and declare himself for the Great Britain Olympics squad.

The Daily Mail says Rooney would see a call up to Stuart Pearce’s Team GB side as an honour and a privilege and would be thrilled to be part of the first British Olympic team since 1960.

But Ferguson said he thought playing Euro 2012 and the Olympics would be too much for players, saying: "They need their rest, need their pre-season training, need their recovery and recuperation from injuries, small injuries they have carried right through the season."

So the idea of his star striker being part of Pearce’s squad after probably featuring in Poland and Ukraine would not go well.

Rooney, 25, is eligible for selection as one of three ‘over-age’ players because he was born before January 1 1989.

Man Utd boss Ferguson: Chelsea definite title challengers

Sat, 10/22/2011

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson rates Chelsea as among the title challengers.

Andre Villas-Boas' side are currently third in the table but have recovered well since being beaten 3-1 at Old Trafford and appear to be in the Barclays Premier League chase for the long haul.

"The important thing for us is we know it's going to be a challenge every year," said the boss. "This year, it may be City or Chelsea. It's a wee bit premature writing Chelsea off as they have the most experience in terms of the players and their squad. It's full of experience so you can't discount them.

"We want to finish above both of them. That's the name of the game for us."

Man Utd legend Robson: Man City can't buy title this season

Sat, 10/22/2011

Manchester United legend Bryan Robson doesn't believe Manchester City can buy the title.

Roberto Mancini could further reinforce City's title bid in the January transfer window, but Robson is sceptical about the idea that money alone can take them all the way.

"It's true City can throw money at it if they identify an area that needs strengthening, but it's not always as easy as that," he told the Daily Mail. "Trying to get players who will actually improve a squad like theirs will be difficult. There aren't many out there, for one thing, and for another, they will take some prising away.

"The very best players are already at top clubs and may well not want to leave. It would be easy for United to say they could overhaul Barcelona by splashing out on Messi, Iniesta and Xavi, but how do you get them out of the Nou Camp? It is easier said than done.

"I believe, for all City's money, we still have the edge over them, because we have the tradition and are still winning the big prizes. Take money out of the equation, and players would want to go to United more than to City, because of the tradition and what the club is all about.

"Of course, money is a factor, as we saw in the summer with Nasri. United were interested in him, but he went to City for the money. He also probably felt he would be playing more at City, but the fact is they can top the rest on wages.

"It can be a problem keeping everyone happy, with a big squad, but it's not so much of a problem for United, because the manager has brought in quite a few younger players, and they are more prepared to accept taking a turn on the bench. They are learning their trade and realise they won't be playing every week."

Tom Cleverley set to start derby for Man Utd

Sat, 10/22/2011

Tom Cleverley could start for Manchester United tomorrow against Manchester City.

The Daily Mail says Ryan Giggs will miss Sunday's derby against local rivals City after picking up a hamstring injury.

But United boss Sir Alex Ferguson looks like he might well have a handy replacement however, with Cleverley set to return to the team.

Cleverley has spent six weeks on the sidelines after spraining ankle ligaments during United's 5-0 win at Bolton.

While United were on Champions League duty in Romania this week, Cleverley underwent three days of intensive solo training.

Manchester United's Wayne Rooney to anger Sir Alex Ferguson by playing in the Olympics - report

Oct 22, 2011

England star set to ignore his manager’s pleas to miss the 2012 games as he is reportedly keen to play in London despite the European Championships being in the same summer
UEFA Chapions League -FC Otelul Galati vs Manchester United,Wayne Rooney
Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney is set to ignore Sir Alex Ferguson's pleas to miss the 2012 Olympic Games by declaring himself available for selection for Stuart Pearce’s squad.

Ferguson has made it clear he would not like his players to be involved in the tournament, though the Daily Mail understands that Rooney would see the call-up as an honour.

“They need their rest, need their pre-season training, need their recovery and recuperation from injuries, small injuries they have carried right through the season,” Ferguson has previously stated.

Rooney will only be involved for England in the upcoming European Championships if the Three Lions progress past the group stage as a result of his recent three-match ban for kicking out at Montenegrin defender Miodrag Dzudovic in Podgorica earlier this month.

The United striker is by no means guaranteed to be selected in Stuart Pearce’s squad as under Olympic rules he is only allowed to select three players who were born before 1st January 1989.

It had previously been thought that representing England in the European Championships would rule out the likes of Rooney and Arsenal star Jack Wilshere, though this week the FA announced that some players could play in both competitions.

Team GB coach Stuart Pearce does not have to announce his squad for the Olympics until a week after the final of the Euros on the July 9.

'Vincent Kompany is great but any player would struggle to contain Wayne Rooney' - former Manchester United midfielder Nicky Butt picks his key derby battles

Oct 22, 2011Butt backs Rio Ferdinand to silence critics and put Mario Balotelli in his place following their feud at Wembley and tips United to edge past local rivals to regain top spot

Former Manchester United midfielder Nicky Butt knows exactly what it takes to win or lose local bragging rights when the Red Devils face Manchester City thanks to 12 glorious years at Old Trafford.

Butt helped United win the Premier League title six times but now the threat to the champions’ dominance from their local rivals, who are currently setting the pace at the top of the table, is greater than ever.

Despite City’s rise, Butt is still expecting his old club to have just enough to silence their noisy neighbours and chalk up a 20th successive home victory in the Premier League and retain their status as top dogs.

Here the former England international gives Goal.com the lowdown on where he thinks bragging rights will be won and lost at Old Trafford.

Rio Ferdinand v Mario Balotelli

"This is the ideal stage for Rio Ferdinand to silence his critics. When you are a top player like Rio is you are always going to get people who can’t wait to write you off but he’s still got what it takes to carry on at the highest level for a good few years yet if he can stay injury-free.

"He’s the best central defender of the Premier League era. He’s a phenomenal player – the most complete centre-half I have ever seen. He is fast, he is strong, he is good in possession and when he’s defending he never goes to ground. He is strong in every aspect of his game and he’s mentally tough as well. He has had a few injuries and people have seized on that to give him stick because he’s not expected to put a foot wrong but he will take it on the chin.

"I bet he will show that he can still do the business at the highest level against City because he is a big-game player. He had a spat with Mario Balotelli last season after the FA Cup semi-final at Wembley and that will be bubbling away at the back of his mind and give him an extra incentive to prove his doubters wrong which top players like him do. I’d back him to show that the sceptics are talking nonsense.

"Rio and Nemanja Vidic have been around the block a fair few times and their experience in the middle of the defence will also be vital and that will help the goalkeeper David de Gea who will be sampling the derby for the first time."

Darren Fletcher vs Samir Nasri

"I know people might accuse me of being biased because I used to be a midfielder but most games are won and lost in midfield and this one will be no exception because whoever comes out on top in this area will probably go home happy.

"Nasri is excellent at linking up the play and it will be up to Darren Fletcher to stop him getting into his stride. Fletcher is very important because he enjoys getting about the pitch and winning the ball and letting the flair players do the rest and start creating things.

"He is a vital cog in the United team but he must be careful not to go too far forward and stay in that little gap in front of the back four to halt Nasri and cut off the supply lines to Sergio Aguero.

"Don’t get me wrong I think Nasri is a fantastic player but if Fletcher makes sure he doesn’t get behind him so he ends up looking over his shoulder and keeps an eye on him, then he and United should be fine.

"This will be Nasri’s first Manchester derby but he played against United plenty of times when he was at Arsenal and I even remember him scoring the winning goal against us a couple of years ago, so everyone will know how much of a threat he poses."

Anderson v David Silva

"David Silva seems to be here, there and everywhere for Manchester City these days and the way David Moyes had Jack Rodwell doing a man-to-man marking job on him when they played Everton showed just how important he has become to City.

"Silva seems to be at the centre of most of City’s attacking moves and he’s great to watch because he’s got a beautiful touch, he can spot a pass a mile off and he’s got an eye for goal and he seems to have developed a good understanding with his forwards such as Sergio Aguero.

"He seems to glide all over the place and links up play really nicely but he won’t find things easy against Anderson because he’s now showing that Sir Alex Ferguson was right to have put so much faith in him.

"Anderson has got everything you need to be a midfielder in that he’s got a great left foot, good with the ball and he’s got loads of energy plus he’s solid defensively and gets a goal every now and again.

"He’s a fine all-round midfielder rather than a holding player and he will to make sure that if he can’t stop the ball getting to Silva when City are on the front foot that he closes him down so quickly that he can’t get his head up and feed Aguero."

Ashley Young vs Micah Richards

"Both City full-backs will be in for a busy afternoon with Nani facing Gael Clichy down the United right wing and Ashley Young up against Micah Richards on the other wing and it is the latter battle that I think most fans will find most intriguing.

"Micah seems to have been around the scene for ages now even though he’s only 23 years old but he’s already a match for most wingers when he comes to defending and also a handful when he gets forward but he will be up against a player who seems cut out for Old Trafford.

"Ashley needs to make sure that he plays high up the pitch to keep Micah pinned back and stop him making his surging runs forward because when he gets going he takes some stopping and clearly enjoys the role of being an over-lapping full-back.

"Ashley is great at cutting inside his full-back and getting in those trademark curling shots and bending in crosses to the far post that will either ask for someone to glance in or end up inside the post.

"That way to goal will trouble Micah because it will mean he is constantly targeting his weaker side so he will need help from his centre-halves and that could open things up for Wayne Rooney and Chicharito."

Wayne Rooney vs Vincent Kompany

"Vincent Kompany is a top, top player and he’s doing a great job as captain of City and he is rightly getting lots of plaudits for the way he is playing because he is performing as well if not better than any other centre-half in the country. Plus it is nice that a player from overseas has come to Manchester and not started moaning about the place which is great.

"Don’t get me wrong, I rate him very highly but even if he is at the top of his game he will find it tough going against Wayne Rooney because any player in the world in any era would struggle to contain him when he is on form.

"He reminded everyone last season that he is capable of the spectacular with that bicycle kick against City but his all-round game is brilliant whether it is hounding defenders, finding space, delivering an incisive pass or just plain old finishing inside the six-yard box.

"Wayne hasn’t had the best of months with that Euro 2012 suspension he picked up while on England duty but he scored a couple in midweek in the Champions League and when he is back on home territory he will be raring to go again.

"I wouldn’t be the slightest bit surprised if he wins the game for United and I’m going for them to edge it 3-2 with another late winner."

Man Utd ace Nani confident he has goal in him against Man City

Thu, 10/20/2011

Manchester United winger Nani feels he has a goal in him against Manchester City this Sunday.

Nani scored the first in United's 2-1 win over City in this fixture last season which was memorable forWayne Rooney's incredible overhead kick winner.

Nani said: "I scored a good goal but Rooney's was even better. I feel confident and comfortable I can score against them again."

He did just that to win the Community Shield in August and exact some revenge for United's defeat in last season's FA Cup semi-final.

Man City's Zabaleta: Aguero better than Man Utd striker Rooney

Thu, 10/20/2011

Pablo Zabaleta insists Manchester City teammate Sergio Aguero is a better player thanManchester United's Wayne Rooney.

Rooney faces City on Sunday in a repeat of last season’s fixture and his spectacular late winner.

“Both are great players, for each team,” said Zabaleta.

“Sergio and Rooney are top, top strikers, not just in the Premier League, but around the world.

“They are very similar players and also important for both teams and they both keep scoring goals so it’s going to be great to see Rooney and Sergio.

And if he had to pick one, who would it be?

“You know, easily for me, Sergio!”

Man Utd fullback Evra needs witness for Suarez action

Thu, 10/20/2011

Manchester United fullback Patrice Evra needs to find a witness to support his claim of racial abuse, it has been revealed.

The Guardian says Luis Suárez increasingly looks like he will not face any charges from the Football Association unless Evra can produce witness statements to support his allegation that he was racially abused during Manchester United's 1-1 draw at Liverpool last weekend.

The FA is planning to send a delegate to Manchester to interview Evra, possibly on Thursday, now that he is back in the country following the Champions League tie against Otelul Galati.

However, the case may rest on whether any of Evra's team-mates can corroborate his accusation that Suárez repeatedly racially abused him.

Man Utd boss Ferguson posts scouts to see Real Betis crock Alvaro Vadillo

Thu, 10/20/2011

Manchester United are interested Real Betis superkid Alvaro Vadillo.

The 17 year-old winger has likened to Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo and Marca says United andAC Milan had scouts posted to see him in action on the weekend against Real Madrid.

United have been following the midfielder since he first appeared for Betis' B team and actually posted two scouts at the Bernabeu to see him in action.

Manchester United's Nani eagerly anticipating playing a part in Manchester City showdown

Oct 20, 2011
The 24-year-old Portuguese says he is motivated by the big occasions and believes home advantage should be enough to ensure that the Red Devils take the bragging rights on Sunday

Manchester United winger Nani is eager to play a part in Sunday’s Premier League showdown against Manchester City.

The Portuguese, who has scored three times in as many games against his side’s local rivals, says he relishes the big fixtures, recognising that the derby has taken on greater importance in recent years.

He told the Daily Telegraph: “All the players want to play in these games, especially me.

“My confidence for these games is high and I feel comfortable in these sort of games.

“I like the pressure these games bring and, every time we play a big game like this one against Manchester City, we have a lot of motivation.

“Every year, the games against City seem to get more important. We usually play well against them and I hope I can make a contribution to make sure we win on Sunday.

“That is what I have been doing this season. I have been working hard and waiting for these big games because I believe I have the quality and mentality to play in them.”

Roberto Mancini’s side are top of the Premier League going into the derby clash, and Nani admits that the Red Devils are in for a test against a talented side, but backs home advantage to see them through.

“I think City are one of the teams who have been doing fantastically since the season started,” the 24-year-old conceded.

“Chelsea are also doing fantastically, so it is too early to say it is just going to be about Manchester United and Manchester City for the title.

“City have a fantastic team at the moment with fantastic players. They play a lot of good stuff and it will be difficult to play against them.

“But we should not forget, we are United and, when we play at home, it is very difficult to beat us.

“We will try to do our best to win the game again and of course we are confident. We should be confident every time we play at home because we have a fantastic home record.

“At Old Trafford, we have to believe we are going to win most of the games, but the motivation against the big teams is the highest it can be and I feel very good to play in this game.”

City defeated United in the FA Cup semi-final last season, but Nani insists the squad are not preoccupied with that loss.

“No - all the players have forgotten this now especially as we beat City in the Community Shield at Wembley at the start of the season,” he declared.

“It’s important that we remember that, rather than the semi-final or any other games we lose.”

Manchester United offer Danny Welbeck bumper new contract at treble current wages - report

The 20-year-old has been in impressive form so far this season and the club reportedly want to tie his future to Old Trafford with a new five-year deal at £50,000 per week
Danny Welbeck - Manchester United (Getty Images)
Manchester United have offered young striker Danny Welbeck a new contract that would treble his current wages, according to the Daily Mail.

The 20-year-old has been in fine form so far this season, scoring five goals in as many starts, and Sir Alex Ferguson is believed to be keen to tie his future to Old Trafford.

Welbeck was reportedly offered a five-year extension at £50,000 per week after recent discussions with the club hierarchy, which would dwarf his current £15,000 per week deal.

The forward is believed to be in no rush to sign a new contract, with talks expected to be ongoing over the coming weeks.

His current contract expires in 18 months’ time and the Red Devils manager apparently feels it is important to remove any doubt over the future of his young charge.

Welbeck appears to have leapfrogged both Dimitar Berbatov and Michael Owen in the pecking order at Old Trafford, having spent last season on loan at Sunderland.

Manchester United icon Ryan Giggs was impressed by Carlo Ancelotti's work at Chelsea.

Giggs says United welcomed the challenge Ancelotti presented them while at Stamford Bridge.

"Good for him. He's really very good," Giggs told Calciomercato.com. "Honestly, we're pleased that there are obstacles in the Premier League.

"Our manager, Sir Alex Ferguson admires him greatly, and all of us who have dealt with him atChelsea, we agree with him."

Man Utd icon Giggs: Taibi never had any luck here

Wed, 10/19/2011

Manchester United icon Ryan Giggs has spoken of Massimo Taibi's ill-fated spell at Old Trafford.

Giggs feels Taibi was the victim of bad fortune during his time at United.

He told Calciomercato.com: "What bad luck! I remember when he arrived, on his debut he was 'man of the match', virtually the best on the field, but the next game was a disaster.

"He made a shocking mistake and our manager lost confidence in him. The rest you know."

Man Utd veteran Giggs: Man City's Balotelli talented but strange

Wed, 10/19/2011

Manchester United icon Ryan Giggs admits he finds Mario Balotelli a "little strange".

Giggs is a fan of the Manchester City striker, but says English football is getting used to his off-field antics.

He told Calciomercato.com: "I think he is really very good, but also a little strange.

"I jut wonder how many fines he's had! In England, not everyone has taken to him, except for all the City fans. But I'm sure he is very talented."

Michael Carrick: Manchester United 'up and running' in Group C after Otelul Galati win

Midfielder admitted his team's all-round play "wasn't quite there" as they lost captain Nemanja Vidic to a red card in between two Wayne Rooney penalties
UEFA Champions League - FC Otelul Galati v Manchester United FC, Wayne Rooney
Michael Carrick believes Manchester United are "up and running" following their 2-0 victory over Otelul Galati in the Champions League.

The Premier League champions had to cope with the loss of Nemanja Vidic and were frustrated for much of the Group C clash against the plucky Romanians.

However, they were rescued by Wayne Rooney, who won two penalties and converted them both, and Carrick admitted that his side did not play particularly well.

"It was a bit, well, bitty," Carrick told Sky Sports. "Good at times. We expected this really.

"People expected us to come here and score a lot of goals and it'd be an easy night, but we knew it would be tough. We had to be patient and in the end we've come through.

"[The pressure is] not something we take notice of to be honest. But we knew ourselves that it was going to be tough. We went into the game expecting it to be tough and anything else was a bonus really.

"We're delighted with the three points, and they were much needed and a long time coming. But we're up and running now and hopefully we can keep the momentum up."

Despite picking up a win, United were not at their best but Carrick claimed the points were more important than the performance.

"It doesn't come all the time. You can't do it every week," he added. "At times we played some nice football, but all-round it wasn't quite there. But we'll take the three points and now we're looking forward to Sunday [against Manchester City].

"The penalties, well especially the second penalty, I thought was a great penalty with the 'keeper going the right way and it had to be right in the corner. That was a nice way to kill it off in the last few minutes.

"It was a dubious sending off at best, really, so we're disappointed with that. It was all hands to the pump for a few minutes really and luckily I got a block in on the guy who had a decent shot at goal and I managed to get in front of him.

"I thought maybe I'd be playing at centre-half for a bit longer but the boss changed it and after that we were pretty comfortable and managed to get a second goal."

Otelul Galati 0-2 Manchester United: Two Rooney penalties earn unconvincing victory as Vidic is controversially sent off on return

Two red cards and two spot-kicks were the main talking points as the visitors edged a tight encounter that was far from the easy match many had envisaged beforehand
Champions League - FC Otelul Galati v Manchester United FC,Wayne Rooney and Ioan Filip
Manchester United edged a tight Champions League encounter with minnows Otelul Galati, as Wayne Rooney bagged a brace from the penalty spot while captain Nemanja Vidic was controversially sent off.

It was far from the straightforward match that many had predicted, and the referee was at the centre of the game, handing United two deserved penalties in the second half that Rooney dispatched with ease, as well as sending off Vidic and the home side's Perendija while handing out a host of bookings.

United seemed to be slightly nervy in the opening exchanges, with Vidic carelessly giving the ball away early on, perhaps a sign of him being ring-rusty after his two-month lay-off.

The home side's first real moment of note came in the 27th minute as Filip picked up the ball before ghosting past Nani and shrugging off a challenge from Anderson to fire in a shot, but his effort curled narrowly over the bar.

Meanwhile, United's first clear effort on goal came from Wayne Rooney in the 30th minute, as he bent a free-kick from distance around the wall that the goalkeeper did well to block and collect at the second attempt.

Within the first five minutes of the restart, United were more intent on attacking, but the Galati players looked to be taking more robust methods in preventing them, with Nani fouled twice in the space of a minute.

But soon after, Rooney earned United a penalty after he was put through by Nani. The striker saw that Chicharito was clear, but his attempted cross was stopped by Sergiu Costin, clearly with his hand.

Rooney picked up the ball and coolly dispatched the penalty, sending the goalkeeper the wrong way and putting United in the lead.

Just as the goal appeared to suggest things were about to calm down, minutes later Vidic became the centre of attention, as he was harshly sent off for a high tackle on Gabriel Giurgiu.

The United captain didn't get the ball, but it was an untidy rather than malicious tackle and a yellow card would have sufficed, given some of the challenges that had already taken place in the game.

United were under pressure again as a result and could have been pegged back but for the timely intervention of Carrick, who slid in with a terrific block as Punosevac threatened.

As the match wore on, however, United's experience was telling as they kept the ball well despite their numerical disadvantage. The introductions of Jones and Jonny Evans from the substitutes' bench helped to settle the defence.

With five minutes to go, the numbers were evened up by the referee as Perendija was booked for a second time as he hauled down Chicharito following a ball over the top.

And in stoppage time, Rooney did make sure of the points as he earned a second penalty himself and brushed himself off before firing in a super strike in the same corner as his first, beating the goalkeeper's low dive.

The win was much needed for Sir Alex Ferguson's men, but they still trail Benfica by two points at the top of Group C.
