United v Chelsea

18.09.2011
United face another stern examination of the incredible home record against Chelsea..
Form GuideThe Reds may have lost the 100 percent start to the season at Benfica in midweek but a draw was a good result in the context of the group. In the Barclays Premier League, Sir Alex's attacking tactics have brought a glut of goals and four excellent victories on the spin. Chelsea have also started well under new boss Andre Villas-Boas. After drawing at Stoke on the opening weekend, the Blues have taken a maximum nine points from their last three fixtures and sank Bayer Leverkusen 2-0 on Tuesday.
Ins and OutsNemanja Vidic (calf), Rafael (shoulder), Tom Cleverley (foot), Danny Welbeck (hamstring) and Darren Gibson (ankle) all miss out. Ashley Young and Rio Ferdinand are available after being rested in Lisbon while Antonio Valencia and Darren Fletcher returned from injury lay-offs in the Benfica clash. Chelsea are sweating on the fitness of Didier Drogba after his head injury against Norwich and Villas-Boas must decide whether to start with Fernando Torres or Danny Sturridge up front. Petr Cech and David Luiz are fully fit again.
Last MeetingIn a pulsating encounter at Old Trafford, the Reds brought the house down with a very early strike by Javier Hernandez. Nemanja Vidic's header doubled the lead as United took a huge step towards winning the title. Frank Lampard pulled one back and a number of missed chances by the hosts kept things tense all the way until the final whistle, which signalled scenes of joy around the stadium.
Top ManJohn Terry is the man who epitomises the Blues' spirit, aggression and determination. A constant force at the back, he'll be as keen as ever to prove the Londoners are capable of wrestling the title back from Old Trafford. He'll be tested by the United attack and mocked by the Stretford End, but expect him to be heading balls away from the danger zone all afternoon.
Quote/unquote"It will be a fantastic game. The games with Chelsea over the last seven years have been very close affairs. There's usually only one goal in it and I think it will be tight again on Sunday." - Sir Alex Ferguson.
Any sub-plots?Matches between the two clubs are rarely dull and revenge will be on the minds of the Blues players after United beat them four times last season and were only defeated in a rearranged game at Stamford Bridge by a debatable penalty. The penalties defeat in Moscow still hurts the West Londoners, and Terry in particular, and a rousing occasion is guaranteed.
Whistle BlowerPhil Dowd takes charge of the big game. The much-respected referee took charge of this season's Community Shield match against City at Wembley and also last season's 3-1 defeat to Liverpool at Anfield, plus the title-clinching draw at Blackburn.
Rivals WatchLiverpool are at Spurs on Sunday (13.30) and City will be in London, taking on Fulham (15.00), while the Reds are doing battle with Chelsea.

"Sir Alex will like that Anders Lindegaard is demanding to play,” Bosnich told talkSPORT. “That will provide competition for places.

“The one thing that he’ll [Lindegaard] have to remember is that United have spent £18million on De Gea, that makes it different.

“He played outstandingly against Benfica, pulling off some really great saves.

“There’s nothing wrong with him [Lindegaard] saying he wants to be United’s number one. As a manager there’s nothing better than having competition for places.”

Man Utd consider delaying Singapore flotation

16.09.11

Manchester United may wait until stock market begins to settle before going ahead with their Singapore flotation.

United, who have privately dismissed renewed speculation about a potential £1.5billion sale to the Qatari Royal Family, have been given permission to launch a flotation.

It had been thought the Glazer family would actively pursue a move that would allow the whole process to be completed by the end of next month, which is still possible.

However, with the club keen to ensure a successful flotation, insiders say they are currently "in no rush" to execute their plans.

One of the reasons for this could be to allow the Stock Market to settle, thereby maximising returns which the Glazer family are hoping will be around £600million if, as anticipated, they opt to put 25 per cent of the club on the market.

"But the biggest thing was losing the weight.

"The virus was bad but for someone like me to lose the weight I did, it was really difficult to put back on. It took me a good few months to get back to my natural weight. "Eventually I got there though and I feel stronger for it now.

"I have even put on a little bit more, which will be beneficial for me as well."

"I don't know what you expect me to say," said Lindegaard, 27, when asked about his position at United. "Do you expect me to say I'm happy to be number two? That's not how it is. I am here because I want to be number one.

"If you are good enough you're going to play - it's as simple as that. I do as well as I can when I get the chances and in the end if I am good enough I am going to be number one."

Man Utd boss Ferguson: Chelsea pair Terry, Lampard have years ahead of them

16.09.11

Manchester United bossSir Alex Ferguson feelsChelsea pair John Terry andFrank Lampard still have years left in their legs - so long as they take care of themselves.

After all, last season he claimed a record 19th title thanks to a squad bulging with experience.

"You can only approach the identification of players when they get older from their abilities on the pitch," he said.

"Ryan Giggs keeps surprising everyone. He scored on Wednesday night, 17 years after he scored his first goal in Europe.

"You can retain your hunger. There are other good examples with Paul Scholes last season, Gary Neville kept coming back even with all his injuries. Edwin van der Sar was fantastic despite being almost 41.

"By looking after yourself and having the will to do it, you can have a long career.

"But all the evidence is on the field. There is no other way to assess it."

“But in the last 15 minutes I think Benfica came into it a bit and Anders (Lindegaard) made one or two terrific saves to keep us in it. We had one or two chances ourselves but I think a draw was a fair result.

“You’ve got to expect a tough game with Benfica and one of contrast. When they had possession they did well and when we had it, we played well. That’s what good teams can do. It was that type of match and both teams played their part.”

One of the most pleasing aspects of Wednesday’s match at the Estadio da Luz was the opportunity to field some of the players who'd previously been on the fringes this season.

“Most of them have had good game time," observed Sir Alex. "Ji-Sung Park and Michael Carrick had a full game. Antonio Valencia and Darren Fletcher both played a good part of the game, as did young Fabio.

“We needed that because we have important times coming up in the Champions League, the Carling Cup, and the Premier League.”

"Obviously we came for the three points and we're disappointed not to get them," Fletcher told MUTV. "But I think a point, away here against a good Benfica side after going a goal down, is a decent point.

"We expected Benfica to start quick when we saw the stadium and their passionate fans. Obviously we went a goal down but we showed good character to respond and we got a foothold in the game. After we equalised, I felt we controlled the match without getting the chances our possession deserved. There were a few half chances here and there but I felt with our possession that we would go on to get the winner. Unfortunately that didn't happen. That's something we'll need to work on."

"Yes, it's slightly strange I suppose seeing managers younger than me," he admitted to MUTV. "I mean he's obviously had a successful time at Porto and Pep Guardiola is only 40 so it might be a trend that is starting to happen."

United's infusion of young talent into the side is ensuring Giggs remains hungry and in tip-top condition as he looks to extend his record-breaking run in the club's first-team.

"I think I'm just enjoying it," he stressed. "Enjoying the challenge each season. The young players carry you through at times in training, when you're feeling a bit down or a bit slow, they are nipping at your heels and just dragging you on. They're making you feel sharp and train that much harder.

"Of course, with the manager and all of your other team-mates, you don't want to let them down. You constantly want to keep the quality you've had during your career, although my game's changed, I've still got to try and contribute to the team which, hopefully, I will carry on doing.

"I've not got any targets at all. If I pass these milestones then it's great but I've never set myself any targets. I try and enjoy it and try to win things. It's what I'm doing. Every moment, every week, every season is a bonus to me now.

"I was getting ready to finish two or three years ago but I'm still enjoying it. It's why I'm carrying on. If I start not enjoying it or feel I'm not contributing to the team, I'll call it a day.

Giggs struck on 42 minutes after Oscar Cardozo had fired Benfica ahead.

Fergie added: "I thought both goals were terrific. The boy Cardozo took his goal fantastically well.

"I think once we scored we played well. I thought our possession in the first half was too cautious but once Ryan scored, I thought we played much better. In the second half, we had some opportunities."

We have a big game on weekend [Chelsea] and we had to rest some players," said Nani.

"I understood the decision of the coach. We talked before the game and he told me he needed me to rest for the next game. I played 20 minutes and it was good."

Westerhof reveals Man Utd star Chicharito was PSV reject

15.09.11

Manchester United strikerJavier Hernandez is aPSV Eindhoven reject, reveals Pachuca chief Hans Westerhof.

The veteran Dutch coach recommended Chicharito to PSV while in charge of Chivas.

"Just before the 2010 World Cup, I visited PSV and chatted with Carlos Salcido and Francisco Maza Rodriguez, then spoke with Fred Rutten and assistant Erik ten Hag," he toldVoetbal International.

"I told them that if they needed a good striker, I could give them one,Javier Hernandez."

A few weeks later, United stepped in to sign Chicharito.

Giggs still feels fresh

Ryan Giggs still has no plans to retire, even though the man in the opposing dug-out at Old Trafford on Sunday will be much younger than his 37 years.

The evergreen Manchester United midfielder scored a tremendous goal against Benfica on Wednesday night and will be eager to face Andre Villas-Boas' Chelsea side after playing a key role in the Blues' Champions League downfall last term.
"Yes, it's slightly strange I suppose seeing managers younger than me," he admitted toMUTV.
Every moment, every week, every season is a bonus to me now.
carrying on. If I start not enjoying it or feel I'm not contributing to the team, I'll call it a day.
"I was getting ready to finish two or three years ago but I'm still enjoying it. It's why I'm
In terms of a future beyond his playing days, Giggs still has no firm plans in place.
"I don't think any players are really ready for retirement," he explained. "Ask a player what he misses and most players don't miss training, nor games. What they miss is going in to training and having the banter, seeing the team spirit. So it's tough to say you are going to miss it.
"The buzz of going out at Old Trafford for big league games and big Champions League games and the feeling you get when you win a game - I'm going to miss all that.
"You just try and prepare yourself to look for the next best thing, whether it'll be TV, coaching or other business interests, you try and prepare yourself. At the moment, I just want to get my badges done and take it from there. I'm really not saying 'no' to anything in football.
"You just prepare yourself as much as you can, but there's just so much concentration on playing, it's difficult to do that - especially at the start of a season. Maybe at the turn of the year, if I know I'm going to finish or am feeling I'm going to finish, I'll just start trying to prepare myself a little bit more."

Carrick predicting best Rooney season

13.09.2011
Michael Carrick believes Manchester United team-mate Wayne Rooney is heading for the best season of his career.

Rooney has been in electric form so far this term. His hat-trick at Bolton Wanderers on Saturday was his second in successive matches, taking his overall tally to eight goals in four matches - just three fewer than he managed in the Barclays Premier League throughout last season.
Although Sir Alex Ferguson intends to make some changes when United begin their latest Champions League quest against Benfica on Wednesday in order to keep his players fresh for Sunday's showdown with Chelsea at Old Trafford, it would be a surprise if Rooney was not involved in some capacity.
Carrick is certainly predicting something special from the 25-year-old, who spent virtually a year in the doldrums after injuring his ankle in a Champions League defeat by Bayern Munich in March 2010.
SINGLE MINUTE
"This is probably Wayne's best season so far and I am expecting big things from him," said Carrick.
"He has done well in the past but he is getting more mature. He is handling things well and going from strength to strength.
"Sometimes he plays well but because he hasn't scored, people don't think he has played well. They just judge him on his goals.
"To score and perform the way he has is brilliant."
Rooney's contribution has helped inspire the youngsters in United's squad, to the extent Carrick had not been called upon to contribute a single minute to United's league season until Tom Cleverley got injured at the Reebok.
Ferguson has said in the past that Carrick usually takes a couple of months to get going.
EXTENDED DEALS
It certainly seemed that way last term when the 30-year-old played just twice during the opening two months - partly due to an ankle injury - but ended up being an integral member of a team that secured a record 19th league title before starting the Champions League final.
"It is not so much a case of being worried about getting back in, more that I just want to play," said the former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder.
"I have to be patient. I have not been left out in the cold in any way and I know I am going to get games.
"It is frustrating but I look at the bigger picture.
"It hasn't just been me who has had to wait. Others are facing the same situation.
"But now the Champions League has started again more players will be needed."

Evra: United have energy to burn

13.09.2011
Patrice Evra has warned that what Manchester United lack in experience they make up for in energy.

After posting the best-ever start at this stage of a Premier League season thanks to their 5-0 battering of Bolton Wanderers on Saturday, United are ready to tackle the biggest test yet of their title credentials.
Although all the talk so far this season has been about Manchester's two contenders - who have yet to drop a point between them - Chelsea are only two points adrift, having drawn their opening match at Stoke City.
TRAINING HARD
However, whilst Evra respects the Blues, he certainly does not fear them, especially knowing how much talent has been injected into the Old Trafford outfit by the clutch of youngsters Sir Alex Ferguson has introduced this season.
"Maybe Chelsea have more experience but United have more energy," said the France defender.
"Energy in football is really important. That is why I am really happy the young players play for us.
"They deserve it. They are training hard and the boss has never been afraid to let them play. Sunday will be a big game for us. We have to make sure we win."

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson insists his side face a tough midfield challenge in its Champions League group stage opener against Benfica.
“The opening game is the toughest for us. Benfica are always a handful and we always expect a difficult game. I watched a couple of their games away from home last season and they were absolutely brilliant," Ferguson told the club's official website.Last season's beaten finalists face the Portuguese outfit on Wednesday in Lisbon and Ferguson has warned his charges that they should be prepared for a difficult encounter.
“I think the hardest part for us will be picking the midfield in that particular game. That area will be the biggest challenge," said Ferguson. “They operate with three midfield players in there. They don’t play anyone off the front. They play three actual midfield players so we’ll have to have a look at that.”
Ferguson has hinted the more seasoned players in Europe such as Darren Fletcher and Michael Carrick could be handed starting roles, in order to bolster his side's experience on the pitch.
“My team in Lisbon might be different on an issue of experience," said Ferguson. "We’ve also got Darren Fletcher back fit. He’s looking good and did well with Scotland last week. I think we’ll need to have more experience in the game."
He added, “The important thing is to qualify. Benfica away from home is the kind of the game you have to respect.”

Javier Hernandez says the feeling around Manchester United is one of excitement after his club's spectacular start to the season.

Hernandez ended his own rough start with two goals as his team ran out as a 5-0 winner Bolton. Wayne Rooney also scored his second straight hat-trick as the goals continued to flow for United.

"There is a lot of excitement about this team," Hernandez said. "Everyone knows about Bolton but we played very well. We created chances and scored goals. Scoring early settled us down. Once you are up in front, the other team needs to go towards your goal. Then you can start to attack more."

Chicharito's brace followed stint on the sidelines through injury and the striker was happy to get back into the flow of things.

"Scoring goals gives any striker confidence," he said. "But the most important thing for me was that I managed to play 90 minutes for the first time because I have been out for two months. I could have scored three myself but I only play to help my team. I will keep working for that to enable us to get more points."

United will be back in action Wednesday against Benfica in the Champions League, but Hernandez is confident that his club has plenty of depth to deal with the quick turnaround.

"This is a great team," he said of his squad. "There is a good blend of young people and experienced ones. Also you have someone like Phil Jones playing right-back, and Chris Smalling did it before. Both play centre-back but they can change positions really well. That is really important."

Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed that Manchester United midfielder Tom Cleverley will be out for four weeks after sustaining an injury in the win away at Bolton on Saturday.

Cleverley was on the receiving end of a strong challenge from Bolton striker Kevin Davies early in the first half, and it had been feared that he had fractured a bone in his foot.

Ferguson, however, confirmed via the club’s official website that he has suffered ligament damage and is set to return in four weeks.

The 22-year-old has started the season in good form in a central midfield partnership alongside Anderson, and was recently called up to the England squad. He was replaced on Saturday by Michael Carrick.

Cleverley adds to a growing list of potential absences through injury ahead of Wednesday’s Champions League match away at Benfica, which following the match at Bolton may include Jonny Evans and Patrice Evra.

The United manager added: "Jonny got a knee in the hip in the second half which was pretty painful and is a doubt for Wednesday [against Benfica], while Patrice got a kick on the kneecap. We'll have a look at them on Sunday."

Why Man Utd, Barcelona and all of Europe are excited about this Nigeria U20 generation

13.09.2011
The transfer scramble is on.
The nation may have felt let down, but early elimination from this summer's U20 World Cuphas not put off Europe's biggest clubs from swooping on Nigeria's best of a generation.
While eliminated at the quarterfinal stage by France, the 12 goals Nigeria scored in their group was a sure sign of the individual talent under coach John Obuh's charge.
The jewel from an outstanding group is striker Ahmed Musa, currently of newly promoted VVV Venlo in Holland.
The summer market shut last month with Musa still a VVV player - and happy with the development. Though courted by Tottenham last season, which was confirmed by VVV officials, the Nigerian feels he can progress at a better rate with another season in Holland.
"At VVV I can develop further in the coming season," said Musa. "Other foreign talents, like Tijani Babangida and Keisuke Honda, have come through this club and then made a big transfer away. I'm happy with VVV."
Having learned his trade in Nigeria with the Aminchi Football Academy, Musa was snapped up by VVV after setting a Nigerian Premier League scoring record with Kano Pillars as a 17 year-old. His exploits attracted the interest of bigger clubs, includingManchester United and Barcelona, but he chose the then Dutch Second Division outfit.
"It's true (about Barcelona and Manchester United), but I knew I wasn't ready to go directly to a top club," explained Musa.
Ajax were also keen after being tipped off about the Nigerian starlet by Babangida.
"He called me asking if I could help with finding a good club," revealed the NigerianWorld Cup veteran. "I had conversations with people at Ajax and then I looked to get back in touch with Ahmed through his agent.
"Later I heard he was going to Venlo. Really a shame, because I think that Ahmed would have fitted in well with Ajax."
It was against Ajax earlier this season that Musa truly made his mark - scoring a brace and being named best afield in an exciting 2-2 draw.
Should this be his breakout season in Europe, Musa won't be alone in getting a big move among his Nigerian teammates.
Almost half the U20 squad were tipped to change clubs following the World Cup.
Terna Suswan, a stylish holding midfielder, has signed with Vitoria Setubal after trialling for two months with the Portuguese club.
Nigeria's captain, Ramon Azeez, signed for Almeria in Spain on transfer deadline day. The defensive midfielder was courted by Manchester United last year after a dazzling U17 World Championships. At Almeria, Azeez was joined by countryman Stanley Okoro, who penned a two-year deal with the Segunda Liga club - but then was sold to Albania's KS Skenderbeu Korce for their Champions League qualifying run.
Almeria saw off stiff competition from Valencia in the final days of the market to land Azeez.
Also in Spain, Nigeria U20 defender Aliyu Mohammed has signed with Villarreal. The left-back was cut by Obuh from his World Cup squad over concerns his club ambitions were affecting his on-field form.
Given the buzz around Obuh's graduates - and the excitement Fengor Ogude (Valerenga) and Brown Ideye (Dynamo Kyiv) created in India against Argentina - Nigeria coach Samson Siasia appears to have on his hands a golden generation leading into the 2014 World Cup.

Man Utd leave Ferdinand at home for Benfica trip

13.09.2011
Manchester United defenderRio Ferdinand is out of their Champions League clash atBenfica.
Ferdinand was not in the 19-man squad that flew to Portugal this morning, meaning United were without their first-choice central defensive pairing as Nemanja Vidic is currently missing with a calf problem.
It is not thought Ferdinand has suffered a fresh injury. However, after making his first appearance in a month during the 5-0 romp at the Reebok, and with Chelsea due at Old Trafford on Sunday,Sir Alex Ferguson is not wanting to take any chances with the 32-year-old, whose fitness record has been patchy over the past few years.

Man Utd legend Van Nistelrooy excited by Malaga future

13.09.2011
Manchester United legend Ruud van Nistelrooy is convinced of great things ahead for Malaga.
Malaga secured their first victory of the season over Granada last night.
Van Nistelrooy declared: "I am looking forward to it, here is possibilities to get maximum results. We have a good coach, good players and a well organized club. I wanted to be part of this and I'm here.
"The question to ask is where will be Malaga in about 10 years. I see highly educated people in key positions at the club, we will grow and improve year after year. There is a great future."
