"I’m really looking forward to kicking on now. When everyone’s fit it’s a great squad and hopefully me coming in can improve the team a bit and we’ll start to kick on from here."

Evra return as Man Utd players welcome stunning Liverpool Cup draw

Mon, 01/09/2012

Manchester United fullback Patrice Evra is back at Anfield this month after drawing Liverpool in the next round of the FA Cup.

United face Liverpool at the end of the month in what will be the first meeting between the sides since October's controversial clash when Kop forward Luis Suarez racially abused Evra.

The Merseysiders last week accepted an eight-match ban for the Uruguayan over the incident and he will not be available for the clash.

United striker Wayne Rooney, who scored twice in yesterday's dramatic 3-2 win at Manchester City, said: "What a draw for next round.

"Another big game. Can't wait for it already."

Red Devils defender Rio Ferdinand added: "Liverpool away . . . what a tie! Great game for the FA Cup and our fans! Let's 'av it! Roll on the fourth round."

Former Liverpool striker Michael Owen, who is battling to overcome a thigh injury, said: "And people talk about United always getting lucky Cup draws!

"Couldn't get much tougher. What a game to look forward to."

And Kop midfielder Charlie Adam added: "Great draw. Man United at home — that's the FA Cup."

Mon, 01/09/2012

Arsenal hero Martin Keown has questioned Rio Ferdinand's value to Manchester United after his performance at Manchester City.

Keown wrote in the Daily Mail: "Watching Rio Ferdinand closely, I felt he was just doing enough to get by and nothing more. I don’t know if he has some pain restricting him but he does not look like the player he used to be.

"He is not as mobile as in the past, was doing the bare minimum and was urging those around him to protect him and take some of his workload. He was left exposed by them at times."

Man Utd ready for Liverpool peace talks after FA Cup draw

Mon, 01/09/2012

Manchester United are ready for peace talks with Liverpool after being drawn in the fourth round of the FA Cup.

The Guardian says United and Liverpool will hold peace talks over the next few weeks after being paired together in an FA Cup fourth-round draw.

The draw will see United, who on Sunday knocked out the holders Manchester City in a dramatic and controversial 3-2 derby victory, go to Anfield at a time when the Luis Suárez affair has caused significant damage to the relationship between the two clubs and left Liverpool in a state of open conflict against the Football Association.

United have privately accepted they will be open to an approach from Liverpool about improving relations and working on a joint strategy ahead of a game in which FA regulations state away clubs are allowed a 15% allocation of tickets. Liverpool reduced United's usual 3,000 allocation to 1,960 for October's game, citing problems of persistent standing and aisle-blocking at previous matches, but may be obliged to give them more than 6,000 tickets this time.

Mon, 01/09/2012

Manchester City have distanced themselves from reports of a move for Manchester United strikerWayne Rooney.

The Telegraph says City were Rooney’s intended destination until the U-turn of 16 months ago.

Now, though, Sheikh Mansour’s people are adamant they have no current interest in signing a player whose acquisition would bring them yet more problems in relation to Uefa’s financial fair-play rules.

Sergio Agüero, Mario Balotelli and Edin Dzeko now fill the gap Rooney might have plugged.

Not-so-bright Man Utd fans tag Man City pubs before derby

Mon, 01/09/2012

Some Manchester United fans can expect a knock on the door from the local police after their antics on the weekend.

The Mirror reports a brave guerrilla army of Manchester United fans who visited the Eastlands area on Friday night to spray-paint local pubs with ‘MUFC’ ahead of yesterday’s derby.

Unfortunately, the intellectually-challenged bunch have posted photos of their graffiti – together with messages inviting Blues to enjoy their handiwork – on their own Facebook pages. Which means they have virtually guaranteed themselves a visit from ‘The Dibble’ soon.

“Seeing him in the dressing room just gave me a lift straight away,” said Welbeck. “Before the game he was on the bench and everyone knows what Paul Scholes can do.

“He just dictates the gameplay and it is fantastic to have him back.

“It was a great day overall and everybody was happy to get through it and I’m delighted for the whole club and the fans as well.”

Mon, 01/09/2012

Man Utd legend Butt: Scholes return genius from Fergie

Mon, 01/09/2012

Manchester United icon Nicky Butt has hailed Paul Scholes' return.

Butt believes Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson pulled off a psychological masterstroke by confirming Scholes was coming out of retirement just before yesterday's Manchester derby.

"It was a smart move by the manager," former United midfielder Butt told MUTV. "It took all the attention off their home record and the bookmakers' odds and switched all the attention to Paul Scholes and Manchester United.

"It was a great little bit of psychology."

Having spent so many years playing alongside Scholes, who retired at the end of last season, Butt knows exactly what his old team-mate can add to United's quest for honours.

"You are not going to get a better player than Paul Scholes," he said. "He is a phenomenal player. He can do what no one else can do.

"He dictates play and keeps things simple. There is no one better at doing that.

"It is a massive boost for everyone at the club."

Mon, 01/09/2012

Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester United are all eyeing the Germany international.

But Ferdinand tweeted: "By the way how can there be any debate about the red card yesterday?? You leave the ground with a #2footTackle = Red card #fact."

Why Liverpool, Man Utd are circling Sao Paulo for Lucas

Mon, 01/09/2012

Liverpool football chief Damien Comolli is desperate to bring him to Anfield, Manchester United have been watching him since he was known by another name, while Real Madrid and Russia's biggest clubs have already seen offers rejected.

For Sao Paulo fans, Lucas Rodrigues Moura da Silva is the real deal. Any youngster who shows promise coming through at Sao Paulo is dubbed the 'new Kaka' by local scribes, but the fans know better and many believe Lucas is the best they're seen since the Real Madrid ace.

But he's not one of their own. For as a junior - and known then as Marcelinho - Lucas caught the eye of European scouts while playing for Corinthians. But it could have all so different as a seven year-old, when he was identified by Juventus playing for Sao Caetano do Sul. Juve were eager to keep him at one of their local satellite clubs, but eventually he was snapped up by Corinthians.

While proud of her son's progress, Mum Fatima admits she had concerns over the travel commitmentsCorinthians demanded.

Fatima was worried Lucas' education was suffering.

"I was terrified because, with this routine every day, he would miss one hour of schooling because of his football. His father and I always shared things. He took care of the football and I, the schooling. We decided that the way it was, it could not go on."

Dad Jorge recalled: "I asked Corinthians to arrange a school that was near the club and accommodation. But the answer was always the same: 'we cannot now do this'."

For three years, Jorge and Fatima were greeted with the same response from Corinthiansmanagement and when his contract came up for renewal, they chose to act.

Sao Paulo, recalled Jorge, moved "heaven and earth" to sign their son. The biggest attraction was their devotion to Lucas' education.

"They said, if he doesn't pass his school year, then he can't play in the team," said Jorge. "That was enough for me."

Lucas was also housed at the local academy, which meant less time travelling and more devoted to his education - and his football.

"It's the best decision I've ever made," added Jorge.

"They (Corinthians) say Sao Paulo stole my son. This is not true. And I'll say that to the face of anyone who believes otherwise."

There is bitterness between the family and Corinthians, which claim he moved only for money. This led to Lucas dropping his 'Marcelinho' moniker. The midfielder wanted to end all ties with his old club and so chose to take the family name in 2010.

"I opted for Sao Paulo. It was best for my development. I am very happy at Sao Paulo, a club that has welcomed me, believed in my talent," said the midfielder.

Sao Paulo know they have something special on their hands and have already wrote a new £70 million buyout clause into his contract in the last six months. This development came just beforeLiverpool tabled a £9 million offer for the 19 year-old earlier this season.

Comolli rates the Brazilian highly and moved for the midfielder after a stunning U20 South American championships last year.

Lucas is capable of playing wide or behind the front pair, not a natural goal scorer, his likeness toKaka cannot be understated. Great on the ball, nimble and strong in possession, he is capable of the spectacular, which is why he's now a rock solid member of Mano Menezes' Brazil squad at such a young age.

United manager Sir Alex Ferguson's interest is no surprise given his fascination with the Brazilian transfer market in recent years. He had Jaap Stam follow Lucas while he was at Corinthians and has kept tabs on his progress since his controversial Sao Paulo move.

A January transfer is unlikely, after it was ruled out by Lucas last month. The best time to move for Lucas will be after the London Games. He's made it clear that the Olympics is his main goal for 2012 and won't be seeking an exit to Europe before then.

Lucas' management also know, if it is to be the Premier League next season, then what better way to sell himself than in front of local clubs in London 2012.

City 2 United 3

08 Jan 2012

United edged past City, in a five goal thriller; to reach the fourth round of the FA Cup.

Team News - Sir Alex`s starting eleven looked to be the strongest he could pick considering the injury problems that have beset the club. The only surprise, after praising De Gea in the morning press was his decision to stick with the `cheaper` option, transfer-wise, Anders Lindegaard in goal. Paul Scholes, having announced his return from retirement, was on the bench.

United - Lindegaard, Evra, Jones, Ferdinand, Smalling, Giggs, Carrick, Nani, Valencia, Rooney, Welbeck

Subs - De Gea, Evans, Rafael, Anderson, Park, Scholes, Hernandez

First Half - United go the action underway but it was to be City that were to press United back into their own area in the opening exchanges. In fact, in the first eight minutes in the Manchester rain, United couldn`t get out of there own area.

But in the ninth minute, with our first attack, we were ahead. Giggs released the ball to Rooney, who in turn fed it out wide to Valencia and when the cross came in it was the advancing Rooney that climbed to head the ball home off the under-side of the bar.

City 0 United 1 (Rooney - 9 minutes)

For Manchester City matters went from bad to worse three minutes later when Chris Foy deemed that a low challenge on Nani was a red card offence and Kompany trudged off.

Lindegaard produced a good save to deny Aguero when the Argentine`s curling shot looked destined for the top corner. Jones shrugged off a leg injury to continue and the home sides hopes were raised when Silva skipped past two defenders but saw his shot deflected wide.

Giggs, playing superbly in the middle of the park, released the ball for Nani to see his shot blocked before, down the other end, Aguero hit the side netting with a shot.

On the half hour mark United doubled their lead. Evra got in down the left and when it looked as if the danger was going to be cleared Welbeck produced an acrobatic volley to leave the keeper grasping a thin air.

City 0 United 2 (Welbeck - 30 minutes)

Nine minutes later, with United well on top, Welbeck was brought down in the penalty area and Chris Foy had no qualms about pointing to the spot. Rooney stepped up but saw Pantilimon dive the correct way to beat his shot away, fortunately the ball looped perfectly up in the air for Rooney to nod home.

City 0 United 3 (Rooney - 39 minutes)

As half time approached united could have had a fourth when a wonderful ball in from Valencia, skidded across the face of the goal with Welbeck inches away from getting a decisive touch.

Half Time - City 0 United 3

Second Half - If United thought the second half would be a cruise they were wrong. Three minutes into the half City reduced the arrears when Evra hauled down Richards and from the free kick Kolarov produced a stunner that dipped over the wall and into the bottom corner.

City 1 United 3 (Kolarov - 48 minutes)

United responded with a header form Nani that went wide whilst Jones, driving into the box, won a corner that was struck wide by Rooney when the ball was worked back to him.

Just before the hour mark, Sir Alex brought on Scholes, taking off Nani and United believed they should have had a penalty when KolArov clearly obstructed Valencia as he went to go past the full back.

With sixty-four minute son the clock, City reduced the arrears further when Aguero netted following a sloppy pass from Scholes. Lindegaard did well to keep out the initial striker but the Argentine striker reacted well to turn the rebound home.

City 2 United 3 (Aguero - 64 minutes)

United, keeping possession against the ten-men in an effort to drain their fitness, saw Scholes drove a rasping low shot wide before Sir Alex introduced Anderson in place of Welbeck.

City, as the clock ran own, believed they should have had a penalty when the ball struck Jones` arm but Chris Foy waved play on. With three minutes of stoppage time announced we were treated to a frantic finale whereby the City keeper got his head to a corner but couldn`t guide the ball towards the net.

United were through.

FA CUP THIRD ROUND: Man Utd exact revenge on derby rivals Man City

08 Jan 2012

Manchester United have got one back on neighbours Manchester City with a 3-2 victory in a thrilling FA Cup third round meeting at Etihad Stadium.
Sir Alex Ferguson’s men bounced back from their 6-1 Premier League defeat at the hands of Roberto Mancini’s charges in October to progress to the fourth round of the famous competition in wet conditions on the blue side of Manchester.
Wayne Rooney netted a double for the victors, who skipped away to a three-goal lead, before a courageous City – who were reduced to ten men when captain Vincent Kompany was dubiously sent off in the 12th minute – came back with two second-half goals but were eventually eliminated from the competition they triumphed in last season.
United blew off some cobwebs inside ten minutes when Rooney played a wide pass out to Antonio Valencia down the right with the Ecuadorian sending the ball into the area for the Red Devils striker to score into Costel Pantilimon’s top right corner with a brilliant header.
City went a man down two minutes after the opening goal when Kompany came through with a two-footed challenge on Nani with referee Chris For brandishing a straight red which was questionable as he failed to make contact with the Portuguese winger.
The one-man advantage was put to good use by United who scored a second on the half-hour mark when Nani released Patrice Evra down the left with the French veteran sliding it towards Danny Welbeck whose first touch popped up onto the head of Samir Nasri but the United striker was able to turn and hit a sweet volley to Pantilimon’s left and into the back of the net.
Less than ten minutes later, United were three to the good when Aleksandar Kolarov chopped down Welbeck in the area with Foy pointing to the spot. Rooney took honours and although his spot-kick was brilliantly saved by Pantilimon, the ball bounced perfectly into the path of the England ace and he was able to nod home unchallenged from close range.
Early in the second half, City struck back when Kolarov atoned for his earlier foul by hitting a brilliant curling free-kick over the United wall and into Anders Lindegaard’s top left corner to put some spice back into proceedings.
A few minutes after the re-introduction of Paul Scholes, who came out of retirement earlier in the day, City were back within a goal in the 64th minute when the veteran midfielder gave it away with a sloppy pass on the right flank. James Milner was the recipient and managed to wriggle himself free to send a perfect cross into Sergio Aguero who hit a first-time shot which was saved by Lindegaard but the Argentine was able to react quickest and finish the rebound from right near the goal-line, sending the home fans into raptures.
Other notable chances included Lindegaard coming up with a massive save in the 14th minute when Aguero put a dangerous curling effort from range on target before Welbeck was inches away from toe-poking Valencia’s whipped cross from the right past Pantilimon late in the first half.
In the 73rd minute, Scholes tested Pantilimon with one of his customary well-struck, low drives less than ten minutes before City had shouts for a penalty when Kolarov’s low cross bounced up off Phil Jones’ knee and onto his arm but referee Foy waved away the protests.
City had a late chance to grab a leveler when Kolarov hit a curling free-kick on target only to see Lindegaard make a fumbled, nevertheless, vital save before Kolarov’s later corner was met by keeper Pantilimon whose header went wide as the home side acted desperately to tie up the encounter but in the end were unable to do so as United ended a two-game losing streak.

Scholes returns to the Man Utd fold

08 Jan 2012

Paul Scholes has come out of retirement and will help Manchester United through their injury crisis until the end of the season and will wear squad number 22.
Scholes said: "I'm delighted the manager feels I can still make a contribution to the team."
The former England international, who made just 16 Premier League starts for United last season, made what was thought to be his final appearance in United's 3-1 defeat to Barcelonain the Champions League final in May.
He added: "I've been pretty clear since I stopped playing that I miss it.
"I'm looking forward to playing my part in trying to bring more success to this great club."
United boss Sir Alex Ferguson feels Scholes retired too soon.
"It's fantastic that Paul has made this decision," said Ferguson. "It's always sad to see great players end their careers, but especially so when they do it early.
"But he has kept himself in great shape and I always felt that he had another season in him. It's terrific to have him back."
Ferguson has described Scholes as a "player of a lifetime" and admitted that replacing the midfielder would prove impossible.
He revealed he had been in talks with Scholes for several weeks about his return and is sure the midfielder can make an instant impact.
"It's been in the offing for a few weeks," Ferguson told ITV.
"He has been playing really well. He came to see me and said he was missing it too much.
"There were no negatives as far as I'm concerned. The fans will be happy and I am happy.
Of players to attempt over 1,000 passes in the Premier League last season, Paul Scholes had the highest success rate (90.2%).
"Everyone knows he is one of the greatest players in Manchester United's history. He has not lost his real fitness."

Man Utd boss Ferguson to satisfy Rooney with £50M Modric push

08 Jan 2012

Manchester United are chasing Tottenham midfielder Luka Modric.
The Mail on Sunday says Modric is the player Manchester United want to sign to convinceWayne Rooney they are going to remain a major force.
The Tottenham midfielder is Sir Alex Ferguson's main summer target and will cost up to £50million after Chelsea set the benchmark last summer with an offer of £40m that Spurs rejected.
Modric has proved himself one of the best players in Europe and a huge fee will be required to finally persuade Spurs chairman Daniel Levy to sell.
But that has not put United off and concluding the deal would be a statement of intent for both Rooney and the club's rivals after their struggles in midfield this season.

It`s Not True!

08 Jan 2012

With speculation rife, in the press this morning, suggesting relations between Sir Alex Ferguson and Wayne Rooney are not all they should be, Rooney, after the game at the Etihad Stadium, was quick to dispel these inferences.

Speaking to the ITV commentator afterwards, Wayne had this to say,

'Everything which had been in the press is a load of nonsense. There are no problems with me at this club, I want to be at this club for a long time."

Is that an end to these stories?

I doubt it!
