Liverpool legend Hansen: Scholes return gives Man Utd edge on Man City

Mon, 01/16/2012

Liverpool legend Alan Hansen feels Paul Scholes' return at Manchester United is a psychological blow to title rivals Manchester City.

Hansen explained in his Telegraph column: "For guys who haven’t been down the road of winning a title, there is a natural inclination to look to those that have. Even United, who have experienced title run-ins many times, rely on experience at key moments.

"It is why, despite being light years behind the likes of City and Tottenham in terms of quality this season, they are somehow joint top of the Premier League. So putting Scholes back into the picture only adds to their advantage over City and Spurs in that crucial area.

"A manager might sign the most exciting 17 year-old on the planet, but if he isn’t quite ready, his arrival would not generate the same kind of uplift that Scholes has given United.

"If his performance against Bolton on Saturday was that of a 27-year-old Paul Scholes, you would have said that he was awful, but his influence on United went beyond his actual playing capabilities. It is all about him simply being around the place.

"City are suffering from the opposite effect having lost the services of Kompany and Touré. They are massive losses to Mancini and his team. It is at times like this that top managers earn their money, however, by making big calls in tough situations."

Real Madrid join battle for Man Utd rebel Morrison

Mon, 01/16/2012

Real Madrid are eyeing Manchester United contract rebel Ravel Morrison.

The Sunday Sun says Real have been in touch with Morrison’s advisors through an intermediary to find out how much he would cost, and whether he would be interested in going to the Bernabeu.

The 18-year-old is already wanted by Arsenal, Manchester City and Tottenham, but Jose Mourinho’s Real would be a compelling option for the wonder kid.

Newcastle United have had one bid turned down and are expected to table an improved offer this week for the £1million-rated forward, who has been cast aside by Sir Alex Ferguson for “unrealistic” contract demands.

A source close to the player said: “There is interest from Real, but Ravel hopes a deal can be done to Newcastle. They are a very big club and it would give him the chance to train with a Premier League first team every day, and possibly get first-team football.”

Why Man Utd, Chelsea and Real Madrid are in River Plate contact for Lucas Ocampos

Mon, 01/16/2012

His first team career is barely five months old, but Lucas Ocampos already has the pick of the game's biggest clubs should he decide to leave River Plate.

Likened to Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo, the 17 year-old, 6ft winger is the subject of intense interest from Chelsea this week, while media sources in Buenos Aries declared Manchester Unitedand Real Madrid held talks with River before Christmas and assured them offers will arrive for Ocampos in 2012.

Currently sitting second in Argentina's Second Division, River president Daniel Passarella had insisted Ocampos would not be sold until they had returned to the top-flight. But the addition ofDavid Trezeguet has changed his thinking and Passarella was in Europe only last week to hold talks with pursuing clubs. Interestingly, he was at the FIFA gala awards, where United managerSir Alex Ferguson collected his career achievement gong.

Daniel Mancusi, a director at River, admits they're now ready to sell Ocampos: "There's been bids, but we've turned them down. If we get an offer to our liking, we'll consider it."

It's only been in the last six months that Ocampos' profile has exploded.

Identified as a junior with Quilmes, the winger was taken by River 18 months ago with little protest and didn't get near the senior squad until last year's preseason. It was the former Inter Milan andParma star Matias Almeyda, now coach of River, who recognised Ocampos' talent and fast-tracked him into his first team for this season.

A centre-forward with River's youth team, Almeyda has since converted Ocampos into a left-sided winger and seen him thrive in his new position.

"Ocampos is a star, he can be the future of River," declared Almeyda before handing the teen his debut against Chacarita Juniors. A week later Ocampos already had his first senior goal and soon the world's biggest clubs were on the phone to Passarella asking him to name his price.

Scouts liken Ocampos to Real Madrid star Angel di Maria, who came through at Newell's Old Boys before being signed by Benfica.

"He's a fighter and is constantly in the game," one observer told tribalfootball.com. "He's always tracking back to help his defence. He has good technique and is a great dribbler. The raw pace he has is often too much for the fullbacks he's so far faced this season. It's very similar to Di Maria. He can pop up anywhere, but does his best work on the left of midfield."

In need of money and with Trezeguet now leading the line, Passarella is actively courting buyers for Ocampos, with £8 million a jumping off point for negotiations.

River need to get maximum return, with Quilmes due 15 per cent of any sell-on fee and a consortium which own part of his registration due 35 per cent.

Chelsea made their move last week, but in United and Real Madrid's favour is that Ocampos is a self-confessed Ronaldo fan. Real would be confident if it came down to choice, as Ocampos' agent, Pablo Sabbag, has stronger links to Spanish football than the Premier League.

But money talks - especially if you're Passarella. Not only does he need to cover the loss from their shock relegation last season, but he's also promised River fans should Ocampos be sold a top-line replacement will arrive - with Internacional's former River favourite Andres D'Alessandro already nominated.

Chelsea, Manchester United or Real Madrid. For Ocampos, any move will be a whirlwind. But having become one of only four ever presents for River in this his debut season, you expect this 17 year-old to handle any big money transfer with similar ease.

Why Real Madrid fans and Spanish government could force Ronaldo into shock Man Utd return

Mon, 01/16/2012

Is the stop-gap option of Paul Scholes' return part of a grander Manchester United plan of bringing back another former star (and we're not talking about David Beckham)?

It was simmering before Christmas, but now things are threatening to boil over in Madrid.

Hounded and jeered by his own fans and under new financial pressure from the local government,Real Madrid now face a real danger of a fed-up Cristiano Ronaldo demanding a Manchester return.

Ronaldo spoke openly last season of receiving photos from Manchester City's owners of luxury cars full of cash when they came calling. But while City will be front and centre should Ronaldo push for a move, a return to United is the more likely - particularly with his agent, the high-profile Jorge Mendes, now so close to the decision-makers at Old Trafford.

No other agent enjoys the relationship Mendes has with United directors. He now has deliveredCristiano Ronaldo, Nani, Anderson, David de Gea and Bebe to Old Trafford in the past eight years and is also driving the end of season deal for Benfica winger Nicolas Gaitan.

Mendes, who also represents Real coach Jose Mourinho, is close to Ronaldo and will know the former United star will be hurting over his fractured relationship with fans.

His friends are also upset with the treatment Real's boo-boys are dishing out. One spoke to AS only last week, declaring: "The guy has feelings and was hurt that day (the El Clasico) when he left the stadium. He could not understand that the Bernabeu were abusing him for missing a pass or criticising him against Barca saying that he always fails when playing them."

It was after that defeat to Barcelona that Ronaldo began considering his situation at Madrid. He bunkered down at home the following Sunday, with just close family and friends, shocked by the abuse coming from his own supporters. As that same confidant said last week, those closest to Ronaldo also still regularly visit Old Trafford and report back on the Stretford End singing his name.

The abuse from the stands has continued and it isn't just the fans who have turned on Ronaldo. The club's honorary president, Alfredo di Stefano, gave the Portuguese zero support when asked about the jeers.

"The public are paying and are always right. If the public asks the player to maximize his efforts with goals, he should not question it," snapped the Real legend.

Just as he knows the support he still has from United fans, Ronaldo will also be well aware that Sir Bobby Charlton or Bryan Robson would never have left him high and dry given similar circumstances.

But if the emotions of being turned on by his own will be hurting Ronaldo, the Spanish government's scrapping of the David Beckham will also be weighing heavily.

Last year the David Beckham loophole, which allowed elite foreign workers — including professional sportsmen — to pay 24 per cent tax, half the top rate in Spain, was ripped up.

It's now just broke that La Liga's high earners will pay 54 per cent of their earnings to the taxman, which will prove a massive hit to Ronaldo and his R9 empire in Spain. While he's on a massive €12 million-a-year to 2015 at Real, such a n unexpected change is sure to shake up 'Team Ronaldo'.

Scholes' return has eased the tension, but United fans have flooded the talkback channels demanding why they failed to sign Wesley Sneijder from Inter Milan in the summer when all parties seemed happy to do the deal.

Could it be that the Glazers and Sir Alex Ferguson are keeping their powder dry for the summer return of Ronaldo? That money which would have gone towards signing Sneijder could now be used to bring back the one player Fergie has spoken openly about re-signing.

And with the club 's Stock Exchange float slated for later this year, what better way to attract investors than the return of Ronaldo and all the projected revenue he will bring?

It all seems to be coming together, the stars are aligning for what could be the greatest deal in the game's history.

Only yesterday, Ronaldo said in a Lisbon interview: "The Premier League and Spanish Liga are the two best leagues, but I'll be very honest. The English league is more competitive. The Spanish is competitive, but not as much as the Premier."

Pining for 'home'? As Fergie would say: "I can't believe it. I can't believe it. Football. Bloody hell."
