Manchester United and England centre-back Rio Ferdinand has backed team-mate Wayne Rooney to bounce back "as per usual" from his sending off against Montenegro.

The 25-year-old was given his marching orders by referee Wolfgang Stark during the second half in Podgorica, a game which the Three Lions drew 2-2, despite being two goals ahead, to seal their passage to the Euro 2012 finals.

Former Everton striker Rooney was shown a straight red card, his second in an England shirt, for petulantly kicking out at Miodrag Dzudovic during the second half of the game.

It is not the first time that the Manchester United star has seen his temperament called into question although Ferdinand, who was left out of the squad for the Three Lions' final qualifying game, has backed the forward to bounce straight back.

Ferdinand Tweeted: "Wazza will bounce back as per usual don't worry. We are through so let's concentrate on that which is of more importance than any individual."
