Manchester United striker Michael Owen insists the 3-0 victory over Aldershot Town in the League Cup showed the team’s eagerness to bounce back after being "kicked in the teeth" by Manchester City at the weekend.
Owen was one of three separate scorers on the night at the EBB Stadium, with Dimitar Berbatov getting the opener, the former Liverpool man grabbing the second, before Antonio Valencia smashed home the third.
After the 6-1 thrashing by rivals City, Owen claims the last 48 hours have been fairly downbeat in the United camp, but believes the result shows its desire to place the loss in its rear-view mirror.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Owen said: "Well just as you can imagine really, the laughs and the jokes have quietened down a little bit and it focused your mind. Sometimes you need a kick in the teeth to get up and going again and concentrate on the basics again, it was a big kick in the teeth and we were eager to bounce back."
He added: "We were a little bit under pressure with the result at the weekend and we still have Manchester United’s reputation to look after in many ways, so no matter what side we put out today we wanted to bounce back."
Aldershot did test the Reds' defense on a number of occasions while pressing for possession and Owen claims United knew it would not be a run of the mill game with such a strong backing from the home crowd.
He said: "We knew it was going to be a tough tie, we knew they’d be at it for the first half, as it happened it was similar to the last tie [Leeds United] in that we were 3-0 up and we took our foot off the gas a little bit. It was a decent game, we played some good stuff in the first half and they played with credit as well."
